tauranga intermediate school newsletter vol 2010/13 23.09.10 rata house literacy brief overview in room 36 during term three students have been understanding and unpacking the dimensions of film the purpose of this learning experience was for students to critically respond to the film !pursuit of happyness understanding the aspects of film and the director s purpose to rewrite the ending of the film !pursuit of happyness as a narrative and then a drama script depicting their new ending using the correct features and dimensions of the text s genre for the writing of the narrative ending as seen below students worked in assigned groups of three to enable a collaborative approach to listening sharing writing and re-crafting students were instructed to rewrite the ending from a specific part in the film where chris gardner main character goes through an internship and is successful in achieving a position as a stock broker in a firm pursuit of happyness this part of my life is called this part of my life is called corruption and addiction after i got the job that i d strived for i put some money aside for christopher s college education all was going well until i had money to spare and my life wasn t satisfying i was lost and confused and as a result i started draining my emotions into the emptiness of a whiskey bottle my life then dragged on to the destroying addiction of drugs and every day my life starting fading before my eyes the drugs were destroying my life my body and my most prized possession christopher i was seen to be an unfit parent and christopher was unwillingly taken from me i felt like my world had been turned upside down there was nothing to live for this part of my life is called retelling of events eventually i had no child no home no money christopher s college education money disappeared and as a result i was back living on the streets i was desperate for a high but with no means to pay my debt to the drug dealers was fast escalating out of control i felt like i was a failure nothing ever seemed to go right for me i don t know what was going on in my head as i walked into that dark alleyway i was obsessed with getting my next hit and i wasn t watching my back i heard a gunshot but didn t feel anything i crawled behind a disgusting dumpster filled with discarded pollution as i smothered my mouth so no one could hear me i felt a sharp coldness strike my face and a burning sensation in my abdomen i glanced at my hand and it was dripping with my blood everything around me was a blur and i couldn t think properly i started having flashbacks and quickly realised i hadn t made the most of my opportunities and failed as a father i know now not to take anything for granted the successful part of my life was only good for such a short time before being snatched away by jamie lynds moshea mankelow and robbie evison room 36 rata house swift deadly we are exploring personal potential -3-
