the first congress was held in 1906 and was the brainchild of reverend richard henry boyd founder of the national baptist publishing board now known as the r h boyd publishing corporation he envisioned a training vehicle to promote sunday school and young people s organizations within black baptist churches the congress quickly became a highly anticipated event where church workers could learn share and fellowship with other christians from around the nation dr r h boyd was a man of great vision a former slave who remained unparalleled in his business acumen faith and vision for christian education by 1906 the national baptist publishing board had become america s largest black publishing concern the company s christian education materials and its reputation in publishing and baptist ministry work had become nationally and internationally known many of the seeds he planted while at the helm of the company have developed deep roots and have grown tall and strong crossing geographical racial and denominational lines one of the latest additions to the congress is the youth congress which attracts youth and young adults ages 4-24 it provides many activities including parades drill teams concerts and classes the congress has survived the great depression two world wars racial segregation and the current recession due to its commitment to god and conservative business strategies today the congress continues to target its offerings to the contemporary needs of the church after more than a century the mission remains steadfast training and equipping generations of pastors ministers teachers missionaries and other workers of all denominations to fulfill the calling that god has placed on their lives during this annual event registrants are exposed to current trends in christian education methodology as well as strategies for effectively implementing the work of the church congress traditionally begins on the second sunday in june and continues for five days with attendance as high as 31,000 it is a travelling school of methods and the past locations include charlotte north carolina nashville tennessee dallas texas and phoenix arizona the convention center is utilized in each city due to the large number of attendees under the current leadership of dr t b boyd iii the national baptist congress remains committed to educating training teaching and amplifying god s word through excellence in christian education resources the congress and r.h boyd publishing corporation will continue to be an asset not only to the african-american community but to the entire nation and throughout the world for this institution has truly been a global name in publishing for over 100 years we are a tradition!
