teaching and learning fred barber studied religious studies english literature history and sociology the teaching at dld is exceptional the emphasis of the college is on the teaching itself rather the officious rules and formalities thus encouraging individual responsibility teachers are approachable and more concerned with educating their students than asserting their authority i like the atmosphere of the college with all my classes since year 10 being pleasant and friendly my favourite subject has to have been english where i have had the freedom to explore a wide range of ideas with varying interpretations the courses have ranged from shakespeare to modern literature so there are interesting aspects for everyone fred intends to read english at oxford university academic classes are small and purposeful on average there are six students per group allowing for a greater measure of individual attention helping students to be more focussed in their approach to their studies and building their confidence regular testing is carried out on a two-weekly basis to develop effective study habits students learn important study skills including note-taking essay-writing time management and revision and exam technique all dld tutors are graduate subject specialists some are text book authors or examiners and a high proportion are oxbridge-educated or holders of postgraduate degrees tutors are selected both for their academic strength and for their enthusiasm and ability to relate positively to young people for students who need additional support individual tuition is available virtual learning environment dld students have online access to a wide range of teaching and learning resources including homework details course notes syllabuses past exam papers supplementary learning resources and revision programmes there are two supervised study areas with space for over seventy students the it suite is adjacent to the library and has networked computers with internet access gcse the college offers a highly successful one-year gcse programme for entry in year 11 and upon completion students may be invited to join our a level programme students doing gcses benefit from being in a small hard working friendly and supportive environment with small classes regular tests and individual attention from teachers entry is via interview and school reference students of statutory school age have timetabled physical activities including football basketball tennis netball and aerobics.

raffaella maisto studied classical civilisation ancient greek and latin i was drawn to dld by the relaxed atmosphere and its central london location i found it very easy to settle because of the family environment the teachers really care about you and do their best to make you excel in what you do ielts classes really helped with my english in my first year but i found my vocabulary has developed much further thanks to my other subjects for instance by translating from greek latin and german into english i have really enjoyed my classical civilisation classes because the teachers are great and they love the subject they teach they are very helpful and encouraging they have inspired a determination and passion in all of us who study the subject raffaella will go to kings college london to read law the sixth form a levels there are over 300 students in the sixth form the majority taking a levels in a two-year programme most of our students are attracted by the strong reputation of our teachers the wide range of a level subjects or by the atmosphere where each individual is recognised and respected and where students are treated as young adults entry is dependent upon satisfactory gcse grades together with a good reference from the previous school retaking exams dld has a proud tradition of helping students to retake exams securing improved grades and allowing them to enter competitive degree courses at leading universities the college offers both one-term and one-year courses and results can be astonishing www.dld.org

pastoral each student is allocated a personal tutor who monitors his or her progress as s/he moves through the course the pastoral welfare of students is paramount and the personal tutors are backed up by a team of directors of studies who guide and support their students academic progression reports are sent out regularly and parents are encouraged to contact the college at any time for updated information attendance is monitored lesson by lesson and parents are contacted as soon as possible by email or telephone to confirm the reason for any absence hamza omaar studied biology and chemistry i came to dld because i could sense that the staff really appreciated how much i wanted to go to medical school and did all they could to facilitate my desire it is the first private school i have been to and i was only able to come here because i was awarded a full scholarship teachers and students alike have made me feel included in the college and i truly feel like i know everyone at least by face dld gives me lots of one-to-one student/teacher time and if i need anything i can always find someone to ask the facilities are top notch the library and it labs are very useful and the science labs have everything you need dld has made me a truly independent learner and allowed me to fully appreciate that i control my own learning and any effort i put in will be reflected in my final grades if you want to learn and achieve come to dld it s all set up for you you just have to want it hamza has been accepted by both ucl and sheffield university to read medicine.

extra curricular activities a wide range of extra curricular activities is offered including sporting cultural and social activities the following are examples dld youth theatre making good use of our superbly equipped theatre the dldyt puts on two performances per year recent productions include the government inspector a christmas carol the trojan women gormenghast and the tempest lamda lessons are taught on a weekly basis for any student interested in taking acting classes for examination by the academy or in preparation for drama school auditions film and television production students get involved in film or tv production scripting film and editing short films classic film club making use of the cinema facilities in the theatre a classic film is screened every monday evening with a brief introductory talk from the head of film and media parents are most welcome to join us music gigs are held once a term in the theatre there is a house band which practises weekly and performs periodically individual instrumental lessons are available in piano voice and guitar all students of the college are encouraged to enter `dld idol which runs through the autumn term art and photography life classes take place once a week in the evening students wishing to continue with art or take up photography but not take the subject at a level can book extra curricular sessions with the heads of art photography raliegh goss studied art and photography i was in the middle of my gcse year when i had to move to london i knew dld would be able to make sure that i didn t fall behind as there are literally 6 people in the class my favourite subject is photography i like the fact that you can turn the subject into what you want using all your own ideas the art and photography facilities are incredible and there is as much space to work as you want over the last 2 years i have grown up a lot especially during my a2 year i think this is down to the teaching system the teachers make you realise that ultimately it is down to you as an individual to achieve what you want to achieve i have taken responsibility for myself there are plenty of extra curricular activities to choose from-they are always fun such as plays sport and art classes dld has shown me a liberty and a real commitment towards students raliegh is taking several short courses in art photography and graphic design at central st martins before completing her foundation course www.dld.org

sport there are regular sports events the sports coordinator arranges teams venues and transport for students to do the following football basketball tennis rock climbing golf netball yoga aerobics and gym-training facilities two supervised study areas with space for 75 students 80 seat theatre with 42 lanterns equipped with a cinema screen and surround sound a music recording studio equipped with sound booth 8 apple macs with cubase and sibelius software three art studios fine art and screen printing sculpture and ceramics textiles photography a dark room with 9 enlargers a light room and a studio separate laboratories for biology chemistry and physics equipped with interactive white boards dld virtual school online course notes past papers homework assignments revision programmes two ict teaching rooms equipped with 24 pcs and interactive white boards a library with an adjacent it study with 16 pcs exclusively for student use a media and film classroom with large screen and all around sound an adjacent edit suite equipped with apple mac g5s equipped with i movie final cut pro quark express and photoshop a common room · · · · chloe ensor studied drama english literature and language mathematics history science business studies and french i heard about dld through a friend who studies here and did much better than was expected of them so i thought this was the place for me the great location is a bonus i love the way it is in central london and yet the area is still quite quiet the teachers are one of the best things about dld they treat us like adults are really supportive and i really feel there is a strong connection between us and them they are always on hand to help and you get the sense that they genuinely want us to succeed i had no confidence at the beginning of the year and i feel my drama classes have completely changed this i have had loads of new ideas which i feel more open about sharing drama has made this easy for me at the same time as being extremely enjoyable it has been a great way to be myself and explore new things i have made lots of new friends and i have learnt how to manage my workload successfully chloe has been accepted to study a levels at dld · · · · · · · ·
