word of welcome since the early years of hospital automation in the sixties a vast area of computing sciences developed which today we call medical informatics it grew from a mainly administrative driven enterprise to a field which helps patients nurses doctors and hospitals by making the increasingly demanding tasks in healthcare feasible the digital explosion has not yet reached the core of the medical profession there are still many areas of healthcare that do not optimally benefit from advances in hardware and software regrettably every year large numbers of sometimes fatal mistakes are made by medical personnel new technologies in automation hold great promise to help reduce this many even believe that healthcare can only sustain its growth and development if the proper informatics are available many governments therefore invest heavily in nationwide systems like the electronic patient records in an attempt to improve the healthcare safety quality and efficiency we believe that linking pins between healthcare and automation are necessary people with sufficient knowledge of both fields able to manage and oversee the very specific possibilities and demands of two very different areas of society people who consider a master medical informatics are more than welcome to join the stimulating academic hospital environment that is the amc here you can improve your skills and focus on insight innovation and development on the one hand and practical applications on the other the best of both worlds what more can you wish for prof g.j den heeten chairman of the board medical informatics 3 university of amsterdam interdisciplinary

medical informatics graduates are valued for their in-depth knowledge of informatics information and communication technologies medical-scientific research and medical practice the programme complies with the health and medical informatics education standards of the international medical informatics association imia and participates in the international partnership in health informatics education iphie www.iphie.org curriculum the curriculum takes an interdisciplinary approach to issues in medical informatics framed within the overarching context of the healthcare organisation it covers three closely related fields n medical treatment and patient care n healthcare organisation processes and logistics n information and communication technology the curriculum yields 120 ects credits n 60 credits for core courses n 12 credits for discipline-related in-depth study n 48 credits for an academic internship the first-year curriculum is divided into two main themes n medical treatment and patient care first semester n healthcare organisation processes and logistics second semester each semester ends with a multidisciplinary internship at the amc-uva the discipline-oriented courses taken during the second year allow you to concentrate on themes relevant to your chosen research project you conclude this master s programme with a research traineeship these traineeships are offered by the amc-uva and other organisations associated with medical and healthcare practice both in the netherlands and abroad marieke schoutsen student of medical informatics `on mondays i attend lectures and afterwards work either independently or in a group on a project or assignment on fridays you re often expected to present that week s work to the professors and your fellow students it still has only a very small foothold in healthcare in this master s programme you study every it subject that can be applied to healthcare the programme s many facets mean that the material is never boring i also think it`s wonderful that there is great demand for graduates of the master`s programme in medical informatics you don t have to worry about not being able to find a job so yes i would definitely recommend this master s programme talented students can acquire traineeships at partner institutions in europe and the united states under the auspices of the iphie 9 university of amsterdam interdisciplinary
