master of science degrees 11 spinoza prize 2009 professor albert van den berg of the university of twente received the spinoza price 2009 for his key breakthroughs in the understanding and manipulation of micro and nano channels and the application of his knowledge to areas such as new medical equipment this prize dutch nobel prize presented by the netherlands organisation for scientific research nwo is the most prestigious dutch award in science and is presented annually to scientists for pioneering research van den berg heads the bios lab-on-a-chip group part of the mesa institute for nanotechnology at the university of twente simon stevin master prize 2009 detlef lohse professor of fluid physics at the university of twente was the recipient of the simon stevin master prize in 2009 the highest distinction for technical-scientific research detlef lohse has built an excellent reputation in the field of research on flow phenomena turbulence and granular media and has gained worldwide renown with his conclusive explanation of sonoluminescence the phenomenon where a small bubble will emit short bursts of light when exposed to ultrasound because of rise in temperature lohse combined concepts from fluid dynamics acoustics chemistry thermodynamics and plasma physics in order to explain this phenomenon and his explanation is now generally accepted the christiaan huygens science award 2009 the christiaan huygens science award 2009 went to dr raluca marin-perianu she received this award for her dissertation on wireless sensor networks small intelligent sensors that communicate with each other over a wireless network from 2004 to 2008 she carried out doctoral research on dynamic wireless sensor networks at the centre for telematics and information technology ctit at the university of twente following her doctoral studies marinperianu set up the company inertia technology a spin-off where she is further developing and applying the results of her research.
