dear friends it is hard to believe that it is already time to pen another letter for our annual report time is passing quickly indeed 2010 marks the 90th anniversary of salesian s unbroken commitment to serve the young decades may have passed persons may have changed walls and physical structures may have moved music dress and hair styles and world events may have changed but throughout these 90 years one thing has remained consistent and unchanging salesian s total dedication to ensure an academic environment in which every young man who comes through our doors experiences that here education is a matter of the heart i am so proud of and grateful for all that is accomplished here each and everyday the young men of salesian are the living acid test that don bosco s system of education works and their lives not merely as academic students but as young men with good values and strong hearts witness to its success each one of you who contribute with time talent and treasure to make this happen each day should justifiably feel very proud and content that your efforts are working thank you as many of you know last may 1st we broke ground for the new brother james weigand athletic center after 63 years salesian high school is getting a new gym named for our legendary bro jim who brought the eagles 353 victories 13 league championships and a ny state title the gym will have seating for 500 weight room wrestling room and new locker rooms and will be fully air conditioned as well it is exciting but not without its challenges as whenever don bosco had a building project we have hit our own share of unexpected snags along the way and as with don bosco it is taking longer and costing more than first projected however also with don bosco we move forward in the deep conviction that as long as we continue to serve the young men sent to us with our very best -god will bring the project to a successful completion we look forward to announce the gym s dedication date for the spring on march 25 2010 our annual president s dinner will highlight our 90th anniversary i ask all of you to please mark the date on your calendars and plan to be present so that it will be for us the largest and most successful celebration to date these weeks too we had our middle states evaluation i am happy to anounce that under the direction of our hardworking dedicated principal mr flaherty and his team together with our outstanding faculty and the young men who make salesian the accreditation team was truly astonished to see how successfully we have met our goals during the past ten years and has re-accredited us for another ten years we at salesian are proud of this achievement and committ ourselves to achieve the new goals we have set out for ourselves for the next ten year period there is so much more good to say but i am told i have to keep my letter within its limits as always our greatest treasure is the young men who come to salesian they continue to be the ones who truly make salesian salesian and as always it is your continued generosity and support which enables so much to happen at salesian for the good of our young men we continue to count on you and that support thank you god bless you gratefully in don bosco fr patrick angelucci sdb `64 director/president

president s dinner march 26 2009 on thursday march 26 2009 salesian high school held its 10th annual president s dinner at beckwith pointe almost 400 friends and benefactors were in attendance to help salesian honor six of the most outstanding people associated with salesian the honorees included long time friend and president of the salesian board of trustees gerard j colaio alumni nicholas `73 and michael `74 pignone salesian provincial fr james heuser sdb college of mt st vincent president charles flynn and pastor of holy name of jesus church our extended family fr martin biglin the night went on without a hitch guests enjoyed a full evening of friends food music and dancing and auctions the celebration allowed salesian and its community to thank and appreciate the acheivements dedication and support of these six incredible individuals alumni nicholas `73 and michael `74 pignone who received the bishop ernest coppo award an award that recognizes alumni acheivement are vetern commercial real estate investors in 2007 the two brothers helped to found and create first resource funding llc first resource is a small lending company which supports primarily to builders contractors and small businesses that are trying to expand the st francis de sales award given to those individuals who are instrumental in helping salesian continue its mission and who have demonstrated exemplary community service volunteerism and a sense of caring and responsibility for others was given to three outstanding individuals fr martin biglin pastor of holy name of jesus chruch fr james heuser sdb salesian s father provincial and gerard j colaio salesian s math leaders program coordinator and president of salesian s board of trustees were all well deserving of this award from fr biglin opening his parish doors to the boys of salesian to fr jim making sure the salesian teachings were kept at their best to mr colaio for always being there for his students these three men are a solid image of what community service and a sense of caring truely means the don bosco distinguished educator award recognizes those individuals who have helped students reach new heights through their unique educational program charles l flynn jr ph.d the recipient of this award has had an advanced educational career since the 80 s charles is an active participant in many professional development and community service organizations including the worchester consortium for higher education the board of directors of the grace institute in manhattan and the bronx borough president s historic preservation task force charles was appointed as the president of the college of mt st vincent in riverdale in july of 2000 honorees with fr pat l r gerard colaio fr martin biglin fr patrick angelucci mr charles flynn nick pignone `73 mike pignone `74 fr james heuser fr jim heuser making his acceptance speech l r fr pat mike pignone `74 nick pignone `73 stephen reitano `67 faculty members l r diana tinaj lorraine danza john juliano michele turner salesian faculty members celebrating at the president s dinner.

golf outing may 4 2009 on may 4 2009 salesian high school held its annual golf outing at lake isle country club despite the rainy conditions alumni friends and salesian faculty students and parents braved the day and made it a success with the weather holding off the worst till after 7pm the participants were able to get in a full days worth of golf the golfers enjoyed a full 18-hole course with refreshments being brought around by our own billy giles `69 the golfers were also able to participate in the hole-in-one contest nearest to pin longest drive and much more after a long day of golfing everyone retired to the club house for dinner drinks and auctions this year salesian offered an extremely wonderful auction item an ultimate golf experience in ireland for four this was salesian main prize in the live auction also raffled off were foursomes of golf to metropolis country club fairview country club and willow ridge country club just to name a few and two courtside tickets to a knicks game the silent auction was a great success as bidding wars went on for ny yankee tickets ny mets tickets and the coveted ny giants game tickets there was also a great amount of sports memoriablia auctioned including autographed ny yankee jerseys ny yankee stadium bats a henrick lundquist autographed photograph and a ya tittle autographed photograph all in all the day was a good time for everyone our partcipants went home as winners not only on the golf course but also in the hearts of all the salesian high school athletes salesian high school and its students as always thank everyone who help support our ever-growing athletics program overall golf outing champs l r nick acocella john miressi `80 tom neville joe barone salesian athletic director chris beal leads his team of shs faculty and students to a job well done on the golf course golf outing regulars sal torre `88 james genova stephen rossi tom torre always have a great time 2009 golfers braving the weather

graduation class of 2009 on may 29 30 2009 salesian high school and the class of 2009 hosted the baccalaureate mass and 85th commencement exercise once again holy name of jesus church and pastor fr martin biglin opened their doors to the school s graduating class faculty friends and family the mass was celebrated by our own director/president fr patrick angelucci sdb 64 fr tom provenzano sdb 85 fr jim molloy sdb and fr john serio sbd it included a slideshow presentation of the graduates culminating four years of hard work dedication and lasting friendships at the end of the mass mr stephen reitano 67 received the coveted silver eagle award for his years of love and support of his alma mater the next morning s commencement exercise saw 106 students receive diplomas the entire school community got to watch these young men proudly walk down the aisle have their name called by their principal mr flaherty and have fr patrick angelucci sdb `64 hand them a diploma and turn their tassel the guest speaker at the commencement was very rev james heuser sdb now the former provincial of the eastern province of the united states and canada the valedictorian was andres zepeda and the salutatorian was andrew marinaccio both young men not only performed in the classroom but were of great service to salesian high school for four years andres is now attending columbia university and andrew is enrolled at suny purchase as the commencent exercises came to an end the silver eagle award was awarded to three very deserving graduates class president kevin cavaluzzo soccer player jeffrey vargas and salutatorian andrew marinaccio all received this award with great pride salesian s word of the year was serve we are very proud to report that the graduating class logged over 6000 hours of community service and received over $6.2 million in scholarships 99 of them are attending some of the finest colleges and universities in the country including columbia university penn state and the university of the sciences in philadelphia we want to let all of the graduates know that salesian high school will always be their home we wish them the best of luck in the future and know that the spirit of st john bosco will be with them forever said fr patrick angelucci sdb 64 salesian players jesus christ super star from march 5 through march 8 2009 the salesian players performed jesus christ superstar collaborating with the drama departments from maria regina the ursuline school the winward school pelham high school and preston high school the boys from salesian rehearsed for months to portray andrew lloyd webber s and tim rice s two-act rock opera as it was when it broke onto broadway on october 12 1971 we welcomed paul romanello to the director s chair who with an experienced cast put on a great 4-day musical matthew morel 08 and peter calamari 08 stars of how to succeed in business without really trying were greatly missed but veteran players picked up the slack miguel gallardo 10 chris toro 10 and will quinones 09 starred in this year s production and did not disappoint they played the roles of jesus judas and pontius pilate respectively miguel jesus had the spotlight turned on him in act i during his solo number poor jersualem chris got to close the show with a riveting rendition of superstar although these young men and women were in front of the audience for four days the people behind the scenes should never go unnoticed john neddermeyer stage manager and fild kroqi cue to cue worked as hard as anyone to make sure these were memorable performances the cast returns twelve actors and as always welcomes new talent the future is very bright for the salesian players as they look forward to a march 2010 performance of west side story

alumni news `07 alum premieres documentary film at g.i festival 2007 salesian graduate erik spink had his 4-minute film tokens of war accepted into the 2009 g.i film festival in washington d.c the film is about his uncle s special forces unit in vietnam the four minute film focused on the friendship of his uncle s airborne ranger group created during the rough times of the vietnam war spink became interested in this subject when he began attending reunions with his mother in honor of his uncle who died in vietnam in 1969 spink interviewed the remaining members of the unit the soldiers interviewed relay their emotional connection and bond rather than the mission says spink it is a film about the brotherhood remember you can now make your annual fund donation to salesian online visit www.salesianhigh.org to make your donation today anything new going on in your life we would love to hear about it email us at jgeideman@salesianhigh.org

salesian high school celebrates the br james wiegand in 1927 the cornerstone of the first indoor athletic facility in westchester was laid on the campus of salesian high school for 82 years it has served as a home for the eagles a place where our athletic teams can show off their talents and has even transformed itself into a church to host mass for the entire student body it has played host to events such as multicultural night and school dances the pillars lining the basketball court have become our 6th man and an opponent s worst enemy all of these things have helped make the gym a pivotal part of the students salesian high school experience on may 1 2009 the students alumni faculty administration and representatives of the salesians of st john bosco held a groundbreaking ceremony for the br jim wiegand sdb athletic center at the site of the new facility the new facility will provide much needed space to help meet the spiraling demands of the school s growing athletic and performing arts programs said the school s principal john flaherty in attendance were br jim wiegand sdb former provincial fr james heuser sdb director and president fr patrick angelucci sdb 64 principal john flaherty athletic director chris beal varsity basketball coach john miressi 80 william giles 69 anthony sibio 71 joe civitano 70 and joe orlando 64 as shown in photo on the left they were joined by student and athlete representatives of each sport together with the entire student body according to mr flaherty the facility will be a tremendous boost to the sports program students will have better training facilities and a gym dedicated to athletics the current gym will remain a part of the salesian high school campus with growing drama and band programs it will remain a place to perform plays each year and house a band room it will also be the site of intramural sports and physical education classes it is well known that in his 19-year career at salesian high school 1961-1980 br jim s athletic program provided a well-rounded balanced athletic program that raised school spirit and instilled principles of sportsmanship competition and fair play his eagles basketball team won a new york state championship in 1976 as well as an unprecedented eight league championships 1964 1965 1966 1971 1972 1975 1976 and 1979 salesian high school alumni especially br jim s former players have expressed their enthusiastic support and are grateful that br jim s service to the school its students and the athletic program will be memorialized in such a tangible and meaningful way it means a great deal to us to honor a man who did so much for salesian high school and all of high school basketball br jim has and always will be a big part of the athletic program this is our way of showing appreciation to the man who put salesian basketball on the map said chris beal.

the new construction of sdb athletic center the br jim wiegand sdb athletic center will stand on the former site of the outdoor basketball courts between the main building and the current gym it will be 16,000 square feet house a regulation sized basketball court wrestling room fitness center office space and locker rooms there will be bleacher seating to accommodate 500 chris beal adds the addition of this state-of-the-art athletic center to our campus will even allow salesian to host playoff basketball games something it has not done in years it will be a great recruiting tool something we can show off while hosting cyo tournaments and during open houses wrestling coach and history teacher angelo petrino adds our wrestling program is bigger now than it has ever been developing wrestlers will be much easier in a place that lends itself to physical fitness a new and improved fitness center is just what salesian high school needs although our teams that compete in the catholic high school athletic association are moving into a new and more comfortable setting the memories of championships and school events in the old gym will last forever don bosco provided his boys with a playground where lasting friendships could be formed salesian high school is continuing his mission knowing that the br jim wiegand sdb athletic center will be a place where lasting friendships can continue to form fr patrick angelucci states i am excited to see the students make use of a facility that is long overdue our band will have more room our drama department can practice and perform without any interruptions and our intramural program can continue to grow an amazing 75 of our students participate in extracurricular activities and we hope to see that number continue to grow construction on the br jim wiegand sdb athletic center is scheduled to be completed by june 2010.

in memoriam remembering those we lost eternal rest grant unto them o lord and let perpetual light shine upon them may the souls of the faithful departed through the mercy of god rest in peace amen ms sheila hanley salesian high school art teacher sheila hanley was a beloved teacher collegue and friend after a long battle with cancer she entered eternal life on january 10 2009 she was a well loved and highly respected faculty member of salesian she will forever be missed b 05/09/41 d 01/10/09 nicholas nespolini salesian high school junior nick a junior died the same day the school was celebrating the annual feast of don bosco january 30 2009 his spirit still lives on through his friends family and classmates it is said that only the good die young and this holds so true for this young man nick salesian will forever hold you in our hearts b 04/21/92 d 01/30/09 let us pray for them mr leonard puglia `49 mr lawrence smith `72 mr john thompson `66 dr william rodgers 51 mr martin o neill `59 yea though i walk through the valley of the shadow of death i will fear no evil for you are with me your rod and your staff they comfort me psalm 23:4

salesian high school eagles a look back in september of 2008 the salesian eagles once again soared to greatness and continued to show improvements as a sports program this year salesian s athletic events were led by the history making soccer team the team capped off a 19-0 record by defeating msgr mcclancy high school in penalty kicks to capture the chsaa intersectional b championship title which was held at adelphi university in garden city ny recognized by the new york daily news and the westchester journal news as one of the elite teams in new york the team held opponents scoreless in fourteen contests junior tom manz was given all-new york honors by the media while sophomore sebastian zambrano and freshman goalkeeper nick camacho were named honorable mention all-new york the eagles basketball program made great strides with its new young players last season the junior varsity team won their regular season chsaa b championship while the varsity team starting four sophomores finished in second place playing at mt st michael high school the varsity team put up a fight till the end with sophomore nick sedia sinking a game tieing three pointer to help bring the game into triple overtime though their season came to an end with this game the eagles had a successful final week with defeats against sacred heart regis and arch-rival team blessed sacrament salesian s wrestling program experienced one of its best in recent history as three of its members reached the new york state championships senior josh zumbado junior nick terp and sophomore david rivera traveled to upstate new york to compete for the state championships all three students placed in the regular season chsaa championships in the spring of 2009 coach artie schoenherr s tennis team continued to impress the local experts early in the season the team was ranked regionally the defending champs came back and won the chsaa b regular season title after holding on to their championship spot they moved on and competed in the intersectional championship at the u.s open in flushing meadows the teams season ended in flushing meadows but they came home winners to all of us at salesian new hall of fame inductees on january 17 2009 the salesian high school hall of fame inducted its newest members the 1970 varsity basketball team this team is considered to be the greatest collection of talent assembled during br jim wiegand s coaching career the 1970 eagles were known for their balanced attack and intimidating defense the big five of luis brignoni billy gallagher lou novembre howie bain and ed tobin all scored in double figures the hard nosed play of jim mccormick coming off the bench epitomized the teams toughness the returning team members br jim and salesian faculty members enjoyed the day starting with watching the eagles varsity basketball team play against cathedral prep the day concluded with a dinner at juliano s in new rochelle.
