welcome st isidore school is an extension of your family the home and school are partners in building a true christian community we at st isidore aim to create a school community whose atmosphere is enlivened by the gospel spirit of freedom and charity we aim to help the student in such a way that the development of his or her own personality will be matched by the growth of the new creation he or she has become by baptism we strive to relate all human culture to the good news of salvation so that the life of faith will illuminate the knowledge which students gain of the world of life and of the human family we will learn and share together each year is different with its own unique atmosphere because each year we are a different family of students parents and faculty members to each we give and from each we receive concern kindness and understanding those we meet will reflect what we share all will point to successful achievement everyone is special to us we invite everyone to join hands and hearts to form a family circle of love and friendship in god s family at st isidore school philosophy in light of the futuristic lines set up by post vatican ii and guided by the pastoral message of catholic education we the faculty at st isidore school aim to initiate and experience a vibrant christian community among the faculty and student body our educational integrated ministry embraces three interlocking dimensions message community and service our ministry scales harmonious development of the whole person spiritually intellectually socially and physically we strive to guide our students to acquire concepts and skills by which they can develop their own personal worth and that of others st isidore will help the students and their parents realize personal choices and actions that will make them attentive reasonable intelligent and loving people through contemporary methods and disciplines the faculty will attempt to meet the needs of our students with growing concern and respect for their individual differences this will help the students experience fulfillment as they mature as christians and citizens of a free society we are all moving toward self-discovery we do this by equipping the students with the tools necessary for acquiring and evaluating information thus the students become persons responsive to the needs of the church and society we will help the students realize that they can build their own future and understand the nature of all people by living in christ students will discover that the work of christ is an on-going process directed by the holy spirit christian education and faith are lifetime concerns st isidore school hopes that students will see their lives attuned to the demands of today and the challenges of tomorrow as lives of dynamic growth and personal service to god and to the whole family on earth mission/vision philosophy we the faculty at st isidore school visualize an education that instructs and inspires students so that they may have a strong sense of personal responsibility toward god self and neighbor through liturgical intellectual and social experiences the community of st isidore school students faculty and staff strive to foster a strong sense of family providing an education that integrates a ministry that enriches the harmonious development of the whole person spiritually intellectually socially and physically we the faculty of st isidore school believe that the education in our school aims at the initiation and experience of a christian community among the student body 1

goals to build a strong personal relationship between staff faculty parents students parishes and community to foster a strong sense of family to allow as much time as possible to give individual instruction where and when needed to provide not only knowledge of school subjects but also values to be acquired and truths to be discovered to encourage a sense of peace and justice to help the students learn to be responsible for their own actions to be consistent in their learning and to not be afraid to take risks and to develop a positive spirit about learning to make st isidore school a place where students live a shared experience of faith in god and where they learn the riches of catholic culture the organization of st isidore school the pastor in accordance with the canon law church law has the overall responsibility for the school including the implementation of diocesan policies he will attend to matters within the school that affect worship the ministry of the word and the spiritual welfare and moral formation of the students it will be his duty to see that the teachings of the church are clearly and accurately presented he is a member of the school board the principal will be the administrator of the school and a member of the school board the principal will be responsible for implementing the school policies that have been established at the diocesan and parish levels her decisions are binding handbook purpose st isidore school is devoted to the total development of each member of the entire christian community whose life it touches cooperation between home and school are vital for realizing the goals and objectives of our catholic education catholic schools are a tradition of value scholarship faith service strength and love this handbook contains basic information which each person should know concerning the policies and regulations of st isidore school these policies have been formulated for the safety and whole development of each child entrusted to our care we urge you to read all information carefully and to keep this handbook available for reference we look forward to working and praying with you during the coming school year communication to parents weekly notices will be sent home every wednesday with your youngest child please read the communications carefully there are times when notices will require a reply your promptness in meeting all deadlines is important and will be appreciated emergency contacts each parent/guardian shall provide the school with telephone numbers where they may be contacted in the event of unforeseen events or emergencies the school requires that the parent provide the names addresses and telephone numbers of individuals who could act in the parent s absence should an unexpected event occur and the parents cannot be contacted 2

pre-kindergarten the pre-school program provides the young child the means to learn and grow in a positive christian atmosphere it is designed to meet the needs and interests of the child allowing for the opportunity to grow spiritually socially intellectually psychologically and physically a pre-kindergarten child must be potty trained if a child has an accident a parent or guardian will be called to come in and change the child children are to be dropped off at 9am and picked up at 11:30am each parent must sign in with a phone number as to where they can be reached if someone other than the parent or guardian picks up a child he/she must show proper id have a letter from the parent or guardian and the child must be able to identify him/her drivers must come in to pick up the children in the convent entrance and must be out of the school yard by 11:45 am each parent is asked to provide a snack water and juice each month a medical form emergency form and medication/allergy form must be on file in the office tuition is rated as to the days attended 2 or 3 and is paid monthly pre-k parents may work bingo if they choose 2010-2011 pre-k tuition rates and tuition contract registration fee non refundable $100.00 per child two day program for 3 year olds tuesday/thursday 9:00am 11:30am yearly sept may $1700.00 monthly $170.00 three day program for 4 year olds monday/wednesday/friday 9:00am 11:30am yearly sept may $1900.00 monthly $190.00 full days are available for an addition $30 a week in case a family decides to not attend st isidore pre-k after the first month the tuition for the first month is non-refundable morning assembly success in school work and regular attendance go hand in hand we ask your cooperation in helping your child to learn the value of being on time students assemble in the schoolyard before the start of school in poor weather they will assemble in the auditorium they will be supervised beginning at 7:50am no student should be in the schoolyard before 7:30am unless accompanied by a parent or guardian st isidore school cannot be held responsible while the children wait to come in they are not to be in the driveway or on the kindergarten fence there is absolutely no ball playing in the morning as this presents a danger when the teachers arrive the bell to come in will ring at 8:10am and the students will enter the school in an orderly fashion we assemble in the hallway for morning prayer at approximately 8:20am any student arriving after 8:20am will be considered tardy she/he must enter through the front door a parent or guardian must sign the child in and let us know why he/she was late 3

lunch children will bring a lunch in disposable containers and packaging to school with them no student will be permitted to buy soda from the machines or have soda brought in by a parent unless the principal has given permission the soda will be sent home if brought to school without permission soda will be permitted only on days we serve hot lunch soda or juice is not to be brought in or purchased for after school bus policy does not allow the students to drink on the buses juice is available from the machines milk white chocolate or low fat is available and may be ordered every three months money must be in by the designated date or milk may not be ordered hot lunch may be purchased twice each week beginning in october students eat in their classrooms and are expected to talk in moderate tones and remain seated at all times during the lunch period no one is to be in the corridor forgotten lunches please leave any forgotten lunches in the school office students will not be permitted to call home for anything forgotten crackers will always be provided if we are informed of the need snack will not be provided hot lunches are never given to students who forgot lunch however if there are extra hot lunches they may be purchased by students recess students should anticipate the weather and dress accordingly parents should not expect teachers or administrators to force their children to dress appropriately only students who have a note from home concerning illness may remain indoors these children will be placed on the steps until the teacher returns students are expected to obey the supervisors on duty misbehavior will result in the loss of recess privileges students are not permitted behind the convent or in the picnic area all classes are assigned fields on a rotating basis students may not leave the yard for any reason and must stay away from the driveways footballs and handballs are permitted with a pass no contact sports are allowed children are encouraged to bring jump ropes frisbees yo-yos etc to play with during recess the school provides yard balls for which the children are responsible parents are assigned to help supervise the lunch period if we do not have the help we need the children will be confined to the black top area if you cannot make it please find a substitute we do keep track of who comes parents help supervise from 11:45 am to 12:15 pm parents and teachers will communicate via cell phones and have contact with the school office parents must have virtus training as well as a code of conduct and release form on file to supervise all lunch periods yard play rules parents as well as students need to be aware of the following rules for outside play the children are to share the fields and courts in their assigned areas grades 1 to 4 may use the playground equipment kindergartners use their own playground only students who are ill who are being punished who are participating in a club activity or have special permission may remain inside if only one parent shows up for supervising the children will only be allowed to play on the blacktop if a teacher parent or anyone supervising the children sees a child speaking with a stranger the adult is obligated to intervene and protect the child escort the child to the office and report the incident students are not permitted 4

to play on the landing by the kindergarten class to be near the dumpster or in the picnic area or in the picnic area around the teacher s vehicles the trailer the well or the baseball bleachers to play in the driveway to leave school property to climb any fences to retrieve a ball to play in the far corner of the yard to play anywhere around the convent to participate in hockey roller blade or games deemed dangerous by a teacher or parent to play handball to play football without a pass only touch football is permitted gym physical education is a required class in new york state all students are expected to participate a child may be excused only if there is a note from a doctor maroon sweats and shorts are permitted gym clothing tee shirts purchased through the school programs or sports programs are permitted students not prepared for class will not be permitted to participate in pe activities the gym grade is based on preparation participation and behavior of the student dismissal students are dismissed at 2:17pm parents are to wait near the front door and may pick up their children by the school entrance we ask for the safety of our children that parents not occupy the corridor or the top of the stairs outside the office if your child is being picked up a note is required in the office that morning if your child will be picked up throughout the school year one note is required for our records school day appointments parents are urged to not schedule any appointments during school hours doctor dentist etc this causes a disruption in the student s learning process if you must take your child out of school during school hours a parent or guardian must provide a note to the school office that morning to be kept on record phoned in requests should only be in case of emergency if a student comes in late a parent must sign the log book located in the hallway stating the reason for lateness and the time this policy is for the safety of all students at st isidore we cannot be held responsible if a child is not signed into school after school starts and there is an emergency office hours the school office will be open from 8:30am to 3:30pm daily phones will be answered after 8:30am until 2:00pm daily please leave a message after hours school business will not be conducted during morning prayer or at dismissal we ask that everyone for the safety of our children write a note and send it to the office if you wish to pick up your child by car at dismissal again phoned in requests should only be in case of emergency principal and faculty appointments please be respectful and do not come to the office with can i see you now we are more than willing to sit with you and give you the time you need if you just make an appointment please do not be annoyed or angry if you are told please make an appointment 5

if you wish to arrange an appointment with the principal please either call or write to the office and an appointment will be confirmed please do not hesitate to contact the office if you have a question or concern that you feel is important parent/teacher conferences are set up by sending a note directly to the teacher please state a reason for the conference and a possible date and time conferences are usually held immediately after or before school no parent will be permitted to see a teacher or disturb any class during school hours for any reason without the approval of the principal if it is necessary to visit a class during the day parents are expected to write a note to the office stating the reason for the visit or in case of an emergency report to the school office so arrangements may be made absenteeism regular attendance by the student is extremely important according to new york state education law absence from school for the following reasons is excusable personal illness death or illness in the family impassable roads weather making travel unsafe quarantine approved educational trips or required presence in court absence for any other reason is held illegal and must be marked on the student s official record if a child is not in attendance in school on a specific day parents are required to notify the office 727-1650 between the hours of 8:30am and 9:00am upon return to school the student must present a note from the parent stating the child s name grade the dates and reason for the absence and the parent s signature these notes must be kept on file for three years when a note is not presented the child will be considered illegally absent an absence of five days requires a doctor s note students who are absent for thirty days or more during the school year will have to repeat the grade the child is responsible for any work missed if a sibling is to pick up any missed work for a sick child it is important that the child makes arrangements in the morning so that the work is ready in the afternoon it would be helpful to send a note requesting missed work students should not miss school to go on vacation work missed for this reason will not be given the student will make up work on return to school or take a penalty instructions for early dismissal st isidore school is now on he one-call system in case of emergency snow days early dismissal delayed openings full day closures if you are in our system you will be contacted via home phone or cell phone check our website to update your numbers the students at st isidore reside in several different school districts each district determines their own closing time therefore dismissal times vary your child/children will leave st isidore school after your district announces and notifies st isidore school of their closing time and then notifies that district s bus company st isidore can only close if an early dismissal is announced by riverhead central school district all emergency closings are announced on walk and wriv radio as well as channel 12 news and channel 12 s website do not call the school incoming calls interfere with the efficient communication with the school districts and bus companies delayed openings delayed openings will be announced on walk and wriv radio stations as well as channel 12 news riverhead school district determines the time st isidore school starts each district may vary if your bus arrives after st isidore opens because your district opened later the students are not marked late 6

full day closures full day closures are announced on walk and wriv radio stations and channel 12 news there will be a message on the school website confirming a full day closure if your school district closes your child/children will not have transportation to st isidore school even if the riverhead school district is open for all the reasons stated previously please know the school district and bus line transporting your children to and from st isidore school you also must know the exact bus number of your child and if possible the phone number of your district and your bus driver s name money sent to school money sent to school for any reason should be placed in an envelope and clearly marked with the student s name grade and purpose please make separate checks for different items as they may go into separate accounts books and book bags each child is required to carry a waterproof book bag to and from school book bags on wheels are to be carried inside the school building any teacher or administrator with any justifiable reason may search book bags at any time all hard covered books must be covered or they will be taken please do not cover the hard text with contact paper contact paper may be used on the soft covered books students are responsible for lost or damaged books telephones students are not permitted to use the telephone except in an emergency only the principal may grant permission because students must learn to accept responsibility for their actions they may not call home for forgotten schoolwork gym clothes musical instruments lunch money etc cell phones no child is permitted to have a cell phone in his/her possession unless for emergency reasons which have been discussed with the principal that child and only that child will be permitted to use it all cell phones must be turned off and left in the office during the day cell phones may be picked up at dismissal by students cell phones found in a student s possession will be confiscated and a parent must retrieve the cell phone at the school office in person absolutely no taking of pictures of anyone or anything in school with a phone unless authorized phone will be taken if pictures are posted on a web site in any regard to st isidore school without permission will be subject to legal action and to disciplinary action fire drills fire drills ensure the safety of the st isidore school community in the event of an emergency they are held during school hours students must remain silent during the drills in order to hear instructions each class is instructed regarding the exiting procedure health information the new york state education law requires medical exams of each school child in the third seventh and tenth grades students entering the school for the first time new students kindergartners and pre-k are all required to have a physical on file the regulations seek the prevention of disease or handicapping 7

conditions through early identification a school physician may perform the physicals it is not intended to serve in lieu of a complete exam forms are provided if you use your own physician the school nurse is on duty limited hours each day students who become ill during the day should report to the main office the student s parents will be notified if any student becomes ill during the school day and if deemed appropriate will be asked to pick up the student the parent is to make this a priority and come at once a child will not be allowed to go home without adult supervision please make sure you notify the school of any change in your work home or cell phone please make sure your emergency contacts and numbers are up to date if your child tells you he/she is sick before going to school please screen them carefully do not send your child to school if ill medication for students at times it may be necessary for your child to take medication during the school hours the nurse will cooperate with the family physician and parent the following are requirements the school nurse must have a written request from the physician in which he/she indicates the frequency and dosage of the prescribed medication and the condition being treated a written request from the parent to administer the medication as specified the medication has to be delivered to the school by the parent in the original prescription bottle the medication must be kept in the nurse s office please do not put any medication in the child s lunch box the school nurse and the administration are not required to administer medication it is up to the administration to see if the giving of the medication is possible if the school nurse is not available it will be up to the principal if she wishes to administer it accident insurance all students are covered by liability insurance this is paid for out of the registration fee all accidents must be reported to the school office as soon as they occur an accident report must be filed or the school will not be responsible field trips in order to participate in any field trip sponsored by st isidore school the student must present a consent form signed by his/her parent on or before the date established by the teacher and principal no verbal permission will be accepted or any other handwritten note field trips are meant to enhance a child s education if the child does not attend the trip with the class it will be an illegal absence if school behavior is consistently inappropriate the student will not be permitted to participate this decision will be based on write-ups detentions and consultation with the teacher the principal will make the final decision parents are invited to chaperone a group only if they have a certificate proving attendance of virtus training remember the trip is not a pleasure outing for the parent and the child parents are asked to supervise all the children not just their own children the parents will be asked to pay the price of admission and transportation at times parents may be asked to drive parents wishing to participate in a class trip may make their wishes known to the teacher the teacher and the principal will make the decision a parent must have a form on file or he/she will not be considered siblings are not permitted to accompany the parents on field trips buses are not covered by insurance to carry anyone but the students and chaperones students are expected to follow the same rules and regulations that they would if they were in the school building a field trip is a privilege not a right parents who are chaperoning are to follow the instructions of the teacher as to where to access the school and at what time they are needed please do not wait in 8

the lobby or library it is preferable that parents wait in their cars until the teacher lets you know she is ready for you e-mails · parents will only be e-mailed about poor school work or lack of homework · teachers should be able to respond to parents within 48 hours · parents will not be e-mailed about discipline problems these will be discussed with you directly first by the teacher and if necessary by the principal · teachers e-mail addresses are on our st isidore web-site under faculty homework homework is given to develop good study and organizational skills that enable the child to progress academically it is meant to be a positive learning experience homework is given daily and may be given on weekends in grades 1 to 8 the allotted time for written homework per grade is kindergarten 15 minutes primary 1 2 3 30 minutes intermediate 4,5 60 minutes and junior high 6,7,8 90 minutes this does not include time necessary for study and/or reading long-term assignments may be given over a weekend or vacation parents should periodically check to determine that their children are doing their homework as it counts as part of the grade a child receives a write-up if he/she fails to do any part of his/her homework after three write-ups the child will receive an after-school detention your child is given a planner in september to write down daily and weekly assignments to encourage a successful homework experience designate where and when homework is to be done work with your child when help is needed but never do it for him/her seek the teacher s advice if there is a problem computer use today s children are the first wave of a computer-literate generation who will use computers throughout their school years and beyond self-discipline is a valuable life skill and must be exercised when using the computers in the library lab or classroom no child is to have food or drink in the library or lab inappropriate treatment of any part of the computer equipment software internet etc inappropriate use of e-mail or inappropriate language drawings suggestions etc will result in not being able to use the computer equipment or rooms use of on-line internet and random searches will be strictly monitored if inappropriate use is determined privileges will be revoked the school s computer system is used for limited educational purposes the school may limit a student s access to materials on the system teachers principal parent guardians or other authorized persons may view anything that is saved accessed transmitted or in use at any time the school may view or delete any and all materials a student has saved transmitted received or momentarily viewed the student has no right to privacy and no absolute right to free speech in using the school s computer resources student code of computer conduct when using the school s computer the child promises to never give any personal information name address phone e-mail gender etc never give another person s personal information never set up or accept an invitation to a meeting with anyone never buy or sell anything on-line 9

never access sexually explicit materials never access or transmit violent material never disarm any software or hardware used to manage the school s internet access never disarm any software or hardware used to protect the school s computer system never use software or hardware where no permission is given never access another computer to which permission has not been given hacking never plagiarize treat other s work ideas as my own never violate copyright law copy another person s work illegally or use his/her work like it is my own without proper permission from that person never participate in illegal activity including the spread of computer viruses never install software or other programs without the permission of the teacher or principal never download or upload any material without the teacher s or principal s permission never transmit material e-mail or other internet postings except under the direct supervision of the teacher always be respectful of people and the equipment never do or say anything using the computer that may not be said or done in my teacher s presence tell the teacher principal or other authorized persons when pornographic violent or discriminatory materials have been seen report to the teacher principal or other authorized persons any request for a meeting or personal information never participate in any illegal activity not hold the school liable for loss of data interruptions of service the accuracy or quality of information obtained through the school s system or any financial obligations arising through the unauthorized use of the school s computer resources if the student violates any of these rules the students will face disciplinary action the action may include removal from the use of the system the student may face more serious consequences including suspension or termination depending on the seriousness of the offenses red flags parents should watch for in computer use at home parents may need to monitor the time a child spends on-line and sites that are visited do you know with whom your child is chatting keep abreast of school progress and watch for changes in grades does your child prefer to socialize with people on-line in place of real life meeting keep an eye on changes in family interaction we strongly suggest that you involve your child in other activities report cards report cards are issued three times each school year report cards are different for kindergarten primary intermediate and junior high conferences times are a must for the first two report cards progress reports are issued if your child is weak in certain areas or failing if there has been a marked difference in your child s performance or if your child has significantly improved three may be given out during the school year these reports are given at a time so as to allow the student to make necessary changes for improvement prior to receiving his/her next report card the child will meet with the principal concerning these reports never is the child made to feel embarrassed during this conference progress reports are to be signed and returned the next day 10

testing st isidore school administers iowa tests to students in grades 2 through 7 in october the iowa tests are norm-referenced standardized tests which measure student achievement students in grade 1 are tested via cogat tests which are standardized measures of student aptitude these tests are given in march new york state testing includes science english language arts and math in grade 4 and math science social studies language arts and technology in grade 8 the purpose of these tests is to assess the achievement of students in attaining acceptable levels of mastery of nys learning standards ela 4 8 in may math 4 8 is in may science 4 8 is in may spanish proficiency for recommended students in the 8th grade takes place in june promotion and retention the principal and the teachers decide on all promotions plans for retention are made during a conference with the child s parents at the beginning of the third trimester although the principal will always be in consultation with the child s teacher the responsibility for determining a student s promotion or retention rests with the principal discipline policy the discipline policy has been adopted to provide faith oriented guidance in the pursuit of academic excellence high moral character self discipline respect for the dignity and rights of all persons positive self worth and concern for the community and common good it is the belief of the school that each student should be treated as a person who is responsible for his/her behavior the school administration will assist each student in this program of personal responsibility by defining some obvious rules of conduct to promote safety discipline and respect for the rights and property of others students who cannot or will not accept this responsibility and who violate school rules will be required to accept the penalty for their actions the following range of penalties may be imposed for violations of the student discipline code 1 verbal warning 2 write-up 3 written warning signed by parents 4 parent/teacher or parent/teacher principal conference 5 detention 6 counseling behavior report card program brc 6 suspension from athletic social or extracurricular activities 7 in-school suspension 8 suspension 9 expulsion the following offenses are punishable with write-ups -failure to wear the proper uniform unless a note is presented failure to wear the proper gym uniform unless a note is presented -excessive talking in the classroom corridor bathroom at lunch or in the bus line 11

rudeness bad manners or talking back failure to do or hand in an assignment playing football without a pass contact sports passing notes notes will be posted or read aloud throwing anything in or out of the school building chewing gum this could end up being an in-school suspension failure to remove a hat inside the building after sufficient reminders the hat may be taken ignoring school policy marring or destroying school property walls desks books sinks chalk boards bathroom stalls fountains grills etc the child will pay for damage playing walkmans cd players game boys and any hand held computerized games which are not permitted in school and will be taken this includes ipods and other technological pieces not approved by the school jumping off fences breaking play yard rules breaking computer rules other minor infractions or disruptions noted by the teacher parent on duty or principal 1st offense warning noted in office 2nd offense conduct report sent home to be signed and returned 3rd offense detention assigned if a child receives 15 write-ups and collects 5 detentions he will lose most of his privileges this includes loss of beach day and a three day out-ofschool suspension if wrongful behavior continues the child will be expelled detentions are given after 3 write-ups those who receive a detention notice must have it signed by the parent and returned the next school day if a detention notice is not returned the school office will call the parents detentions are held from 2:15pm until 3pm for deserving students it is the students responsibility to arrange transportation after the detention no substitution is available except in extreme circumstances a child who fails to attend a detention will be dealt with appropriately the following offenses will require an in-school suspension or an out of school suspension to be decided by the principal fighting or being involved in a physical fight lighting of matches in school on school property or on the bus using inappropriate language body language or gestures possessing firecrackers stink bombs or laser pointers deliberately destroying school property demonstrating extreme lack of cooperation possessing alcohol drugs or harmful objects sexually harassing in any form racially harassing in any form bullying of any type 12

truancy using the computer in inappropriate ways any other issues deemed serious enough by the principal and/or teacher parents will be notified immediately when a suspension is given only the principal will issue suspension school behavior affects everyone the child who does something inappropriate the students who have to put up with it and the teacher who cannot do her job because of it thus it will not be tolerated a child who has received 4 detentions 12 write-ups will be required to participate in a behavior program this is done to build a bridge between the home school student teacher principal and parent a report card will be developed pertaining to the problems the student is having at the end of each day the teacher scores the students behavior if improvement is made a plus is given student progress is monitored daily if inappropriate behavior continues the student will be called to a conference to decide whether or not to keep the student in the school policy on alcohol and drugs in order for the school to promote a healthy environment for learning and because of the serious threat that illicit drugs and alcohol pose for a person s physical and emotional well-being the possession or use of illegal substances or being under the influence of such substances in school on school grounds or at any school sponsored functions will result in immediate suspension the proper authorities will be called to help with the problem weapons any child caught with a weapon in his/her possession or involved in violence will be suspended immediately this includes firearms explosives cutlery slingshots pen shooters predatory action extortion negative physical contact between students negative physical contact with staff attack/injury regarding staff harassment policy harassment means any intimidating or disrespectful action word or gesture sexual harassment is illegal and violates state and federal law harassment includes written sexual harassment such as letters notes invitations and drawings of a sexual nature and computer messages of a sexual nature verbal sexual harassment is offensive words and comments spoken privately or in front of others i.e comments about a person s body name calling sexual jokes using sexual orientation as an insult sexual suggestions spreading rumors about a person of a sexual nature nonverbal sexual harassment such as a sexual gesture writing a person s name along with a sexual remark facial expressions suggestive looks leering staring gesturing displaying sexually suggestive objects or pictures cartoons posters or magazines physical harassment such as pats squeezes touching pinching repeatedly brushing up against another s body assault and blocking movement with this in mind students are prohibited from engaging in public displays of affection on school property reporting procedure any student who thinks he or she has been the victim of harassment should report the conduct to a teacher teacher s aide or principal all information will be documented 13

it is vital that students tell the harasser directly to stop report it immediately and document the incidents it is important that parents be supportive of all disciplinary action taken by the faculty staff and administration the disciplinary policy is in effect to help st isidore school operate efficiently safely and productively it benefits all managing bullies bullying is a series of cruel or hostile behaviors bullies seek power they gain this feeling of power by causing distress for their victims physical bullies use physical aggression or may take the victims property verbal bullies use words to hurt or humiliate the other child it is the easiest bullying strategy to use and is denied by the bully or excused by saying i was only joking verbal bullying may leave longer lasting scars than physical bullying relational bullies try to control relationships by persuading some children to reject others they may spread hurtful rumors reactive victims/bullies live in both worlds they may bully others because someone else bullies them or they may taunt bullies and they draw some attention from bullies because of their own behaviors physical bullying increases through the elementary years and peaks by early junior high verbal bullying remains constant bullies lose their popularity as they get older and most students eventually dislike them episodes are brief lasting less than a minute children who are bullies grow up to have more arrests for dwi spousal abuse and child abuse most adults do not know how to intervene so bullying is often overlooked most victims are unlikely to report bullying children who are repeatedly victimized sometimes see suicide as their only escape there is a zero tolerance policy for bullying the staff has been trained with a plan and will support any child who feels he is being bullied every teacher will listen to any report of bullying children should be made aware of the different types of bullies children need to know that reporting bullying is a social responsibility and will benefit the victim the bully and the entire school community there are consequences to being a bully the child is confronted the parent is informed an apology is made to the victim the bully is written up and the incident reported is placed on file there are no exceptions and there are no special circumstances our desire is to have students who will refuse to watch bullying who will report bullying and who will make clear to bullies that their behavior is wrong and unacceptable this will have an impact on bullying in our school student clubs school and church choir sings at first friday masses first communion confirmation graduation and other special occasions the choir practices in school grades 2 to 8 st isidore church choir sings at the 9:15am mass grades 2 to 8 practice is at 11 am in the church on saturdays craft club ­ grades 4-8 mrs berdinka wednesdays 2:20 3:30 sports track basketball bowling cheerleading and softball are offered bell/chime choir meets wednesday afternoon in the library from 2:30pm to 3:30pm the only requirements are being able to count to 4 and knowing left from right grades 3 to 8 knitting club mrs latour grades 4 -8 sewing club mrs kristich grades 4-8 yearbook grade 8 computer club by invitation only msgr john j mirecki honor society all seventh and eighth grade students meeting the following criterion will be considered for membership to this esteemed society 1 grades above 90 percent in all subject areas for two marking periods 14

2 excellent or 1 in all areas of personal growth and community awareness 3 demonstration of excellence in leadership service character and citizenship 4 demonstration of service that may include being an alter server or lector participating in the parish sacramental choir or bell choir or being a peer tutor each student who has applied will receive a letter after the first semester report card informing him/her of possible acceptance induction into the msgr john j mirecki honor society is held in the spring any new club will be considered providing there is interest and there is an advisor school dance policy grades 6 to 8 hours 7pm to 10pm there is no entrance after 8:30pm and no one is permitted to leave until 10pm if a student leaves the dance there is no reentry students may not loiter on school property parents will be notified when a child has left principal teachers and parents supervise the dances no smoking soda cans jackets or sweaters with pockets are permitted absolutely no alcoholic beverages cigarettes or drugs will be tolerated cell phones may be brought to the dance but will be left in the kitchen during the dance neat and clean casual clothes are appropriate follow change of pace rules children not dressed appropriately will not be admitted the dances are only for st isidore school students and are closed to outsiders volunteers many activities at st isidore school depend on the generosity of our volunteers parent volunteers serve as library assistants computer assistants hot lunch servers drivers art aides and room parents parents may volunteer only if a virtus training form and other necessary forms are completed and on file in the school office room parent responsibilities call parents when necessary pertaining to school parent club or emergency messages help arrange transportation for local trips help with the thanksgiving feast catholic schools week and teacher appreciation assist as needed by the teacher and principal help in the fund-raising responsibility of the class by calling parents coordinating various aspects of the events and working closely with the executive board pastor and principal arrange a gift for the teacher from the class for christmas and at the end of the school year provide a treat for the class on the teacher s birthday help with class trips as a contact person arrange for class treats for holidays such as thanksgiving christmas and easter we strive to make our treats healthy some suggestions are muffins small plain cupcakes juice fruit vegetables and cheese 15
