see the smile on their face as well and personally thank them the mission of the u s marine corps reserve toys for tots program is to collect new unwrapped toys during october november and december each year and distribute those toys as christmas gifts to less fortunate children in the community in which the campaign is conducted the primary goal of toys for tots is to deliver through a new toy at christmas a message of hope to less fortunate youngsters that will assist them in becoming responsible productive patriotic citizens toys for tots began in 1947 when major bill hendricks uscr and a group of marine reservists in los angeles collected and distributed 5,000 toys to needy children the idea came from bill s wife diane in the fall of 1947 diane crafted a homemade doll and asked bill to deliver the doll to an organization which would give it to a needy child at christmas when bill determined that no agency existed diane told bill that he should start one he did the 1947 pilot project was so successful that the marine corps adopted toys for tots in 1948 and expanded it into a nationwide campaign the objectives of toys for tots is to help less fortunate children throughout east texas and the country to experience the joy of christmas to play an active role in the development of one of our nation s most valuable resources our children to unite all members of local communities in a common cause each year during the annual toy collection and distribution campaign and to contribute to better communities in the future since beginning the u.s marine corps reserve toys for tots program in 1947 marines have distributed more than 452 million toys to more than 209 million needy children this charitable endeavor has made u.s marines the unchallenged leader in looking after less fortunate children at christmas over its life span the marine toys for tots foundation has supplemented local toy collections with more than 98 million toys valued at more than $694 million plus provided promotion and support materials valued at over $8.5 million toy drive by jammin jimmy olson i beg you to join me and help us meet our goal of at least 2,000 pounds of toys and 102 bicycles please bring a new unwrapped toy or bike to my pod starting monday december 10th this truly is all about the kids and i am blessed to be part of a company that prides itself in helping the community they serve even if it means not making a penny in profit and in fact most times losing money to make it happen from our founders dudley and dot waller to our president bill waller who pushed us to be a pillar in the community and has taught us all the meaning of integrity and responsibility when it comes to everything we do at waller broadcasting listen to my morning show on 95.3 102.3 the breeze for updates east texas outdoors magazine pg 13
