r anger r eview thirteen begin teaching careers at forest hills school district vol xxxiii no 1 october 2012 f orest h ills three new professional staff members at the middle school beginning this year are mrs danielle giles mr john saksa and dr jennifer motter mrs giles left earned her under graduate degree in elementary education with a history minor from university of pittsburgh at johnstown and earned her masters of education ­ reading specialist from west chester university this is her tenth year of teaching mrs giles teaches reading 7 8 and is co-advisor for the competition reading team mr saksa is a 2001 graduate of forest hills he earned a bachelor of science degree in sport management from indiana university of pennsylvania in 2007 and a bachelor of arts degree in special education/elementary education from saint francis university in 2011 mr saksa plans on pursuing a master s degree in education this spring he is currently teaching emotional support in the middle school and learning support in the high school dr motter is a graduate of richland high school in may 2012 she graduated from the pennsylvania state university with a ph.d in art education dr motter is co-president elect of the national art education association women s caucus she has a m.a in educational technology from california state university northridge she earned a b.s in art education and an equivalency of a b.a in art concentration graphic design from indiana university of pennsylvania she teaches grades 7 through 9 in september 2012 dr motter started the fhms arttech club she is also co-advisor of the middle school yearbook ms julianne kopach left is new to the teaching staff at the high school she graduated from richland high school in 2005 and received her bachelor s and master s degrees in elementary education/special education from saint francis university ms kopach is also certified in english 7-12 she will be teaching special education inclusion and language arts at the high school see new teachers on page 5

superintendent s message my message to you as superintendent of the forest hills school district is one of appreciation and thanks to everyone in the community who was instrumental in making my first year as superintendent a very rewarding and positive experience in addition i wish each member of the forest hills community a wealth of joy and prosperity for the 20122013 school year my intention is that this year is even better than all the others and each student will be provided the opportunity to maximize his or her potential while maintaining the district s financial stability superintendents school boards and educators across the state of pennsylvania realize that they have an ethical and financial responsibility to their community to be cost effective the forest hills school board and administration work cooperatively with individuals in the district to maintain this financial stability while continuing to provide quality programs so that each student flourishes academically and socially there continues to be a debate as to whether public education is meeting the needs of students and successfully preparing them to compete in the global economy last year brian griffith superintendent of penns valley school district spoke before the pennsylvania house of representatives education committee and provided testimony on public education he stated some assume that school choice facilitates competition and that competition in turn improves the overall educational product i want us all to pause and carefully consider this thought in the community public school system districts freely share ideas and resources between each other public schools collaborate as a community of learners to challenge each other to improve our practice there is little animosity instead a strong willingness exists to share ideas that we have found to be successful in benefit of student learning we share professional development ideas visit each other s schools provide training between school districts and share in our failures and solutions in support of brian griffith s statement a recent survey was completed by the pennsylvania school boards association psba that clearly indicates that residents of the state are satisfied with their local schools the survey indicates the closer and more involved pennsylvanians are with their community schools the more satisfied they are with the school in fact over 2/3 of pennsylvanians 67 are satisfied with the qualify of the community schools less than 10 are very dissatisfied also pennsylvanians with and without children rank their local schools high 69 of parents with children under the age of 18 living at home were satisfied with their community public school forest hills school district s staff strives to create in each student an adequate working knowledge of the education process and in doing so stimulates pride and desire to learn we have taken a holistic approach and incorporated philosophies into the classroom to instill honesty and citizenship in all students we continue to seek the best strategies to help all students improve performance and meet the challenges of the 21st century we pledge to maintain high expectations for classroom achievement and behavior while providing needed assistance for all students who need alternative approaches we embrace the philosophy and believe it is our responsibility to create an educational environment conducive to learning for all students the academically gifted as well as the educationally disadvantaged must all be able to reach their career aspirations and dreams i request that you as parents and guardians in return set high goals and expectations for your children s academic success your encouragement for success should be the propelling force that motivates your child encourage and support your child in all educational and extra-curricular endeavors stress the importance of a quality education and help to ensure future opportunities for your child by combining this knowledge and expertise parents and teachers can give students the best chance for success my goal as superintendent of the forest hills school district is to continue to work with you the parents and guardians of our students to open doors of opportunity so that all students can realize a bright future which empowers them to be quality productive citizens educa on is for improving the lives of others and for leaving your community and world be er than you found it marian edelman 2 area legislators thank you so much for your con nued support of public educa on thank you!

homebound instruction guidelines the purpose of homebound instruction is to keep students on track academically while the student is temporarily out of school for physical disability illness injury or when such confinement is recommended for psychological or psychiatric reasons homebound instruction is school-supplied one-to-one tutoring for a limited period of time forest hills school district may approve and provide parent requested and physician recommended homebound instruction for their child for a period of no longer than three months without consulting the pa department of education pde following the initial three months the district must obtain approval from pde to extend homebound instruction it is the responsibility of the family to ensure adequate proof is provided or the extension request may be denied when an extension is requested pde requires that a licensed practitioner submit to the school district an updated examination and extension request within two weeks of the impending extension if an extension is not granted by either the school district or pde the student must return to school attendance the state mandates a student on homebound instruction receive five hours of instruction per week the accumulation of five hours per week can be adapted to suit the needs and schedule of the student and the instructor example ­ two hours per day for 2 days per week and one hour for one day rotation can be scheduled to satisfy the five hour per week state mandate the pennsylvania compulsory attendance law requires a student who is placed on homebound instruction must comply with the school s attendance policy therefore every hour less than the total of five hours of homebound instruction the student misses will be marked as absent ­ one day for each hour missed if a parent fails to contact the assigned instructor in a timely manner that the student is ill provide any other legal written excuse to cancel homebound instruction or no one is home the student will be marked illegally absent building principals will be notified by the instructor and appropriate action will be taken according to the district s attendance policy pssa/keystone exam testing a homebound student is required to participate in the pennsylvania system of school assessment pssa and/or keystone exams if the student is incapable of participating at the school the individual who is providing the homebound instruction should be trained to administer the assessment and then administer the test to the student in his/her home problem solving class at ms this year for the first time forest hills middle school has implemented a problem solving class into the curriculum for 9th grade gifted students the goal of this class is to impart skills similar to tony wagner s seven survival skills tony wagner works as innovation education fellow at the technology entrepreneurship center at harvard and speaks frequently at both national and international conferences about these seven survival skills · critical thinking and problem solving · · · · · · collaboration across networks and leading by influence agility and adaptability initiative and entrepreneurship effective oral and written communication accessing and analyzing information curiosity and imagination these skills will be taught within the context of the future problem solving program international fpspi forest hills is the first school district in central pennsylvania to bring this cutting-edge program to the classroom fpspi involves thousands of students from different countries around the world with a mission to cultivate critical and creative thinking skills promote curiosity and imagination and help students develop their vision of the future the program will consist of a problem presented at the beginning of the year students will investigate the issue throughout the school year and develop solutions using critical thinking logic and pure ingenuity the class will serve as a test pilot for the district as they study ipad inclusion in the classroom the class is structured as a 21st century classroom and will model digital interaction in the teaching and learning process mr patrick kovalsky gifted support teacher and mr kevin lang technology education teacher will model wagner s second skill by collaboratively teaching this new class the students homecoming wherever i go wherever i go was the theme for the 2012 homecoming court chelsea wess was crowned queen at the dance held on september 18 2012 the homecoming court members were chelsea chizmar sydney harteis hannah blanchetti marlee schrift briana kostan maggie madison nicole miller megan ross and abby shaffer they are pictured above with their fathers the court was presented during half-time of the september 21st football game by their fathers this year s charity of choice was the christian home of johnstown the court has been raising money from donations chances and dress down/hat day the court has raised approximately 900 to date middle school student council activities october will be a very busy month at forest hills middle school on october 23rd the 9th grade class will be taking a field trip to gettysburg national military park this is a culminating event based upon the lessons learned in their history classes from the beginning of the school year students will tour the park s museum see the films documenting the events of those historic three days and get a guided battlefield tour through the park with gettysburg s expert park attendants it s going to be a very exciting and informative trip on october 31st two events are planned first is the annual mix-it-up day this national event is designed to promote social acceptance of diversity this year s theme will revolve around music over the years occasionally music has divided generations but has also been on the cutting edge of acceptance of different cultures and races think of chuck berry the supremes richey valens pioneering acceptance then the 60 s was the epitome of music reflecting the social changes happening in society with bob dylan jimmie hendrix that change continued through the 80 s 90 s with rap and hip-hop extending into today s music students will be permitted to wear clothes reflecting their favorite genre of music and will be randomly seated at lunch to get to know other students they may not already know they will also have an opportunity to discuss and learn about different types of musical influence in their history classes also on october 31st the annual halloween dance will be held as part of the students commitment to social awareness of those less fortunate students may attend the dance in halloween costumes if they bring in a donation for the johnstown christian home the johnstown christian home is a safe place for those children who can no longer live with their families due to various reasons although they receive funding for the basics they depend on donations for special treats like pop-tarts chips or halloween candy they also accept donations for their annual basket raffle which helps buy the children christmas presents 4

new teachers continued from page 1 new professional staff at the elementary school include front row l-r mrs mindy jani ms anne rhoades and ms kristin bafile middle mrs rebecca daly mrs cassandra layman ms amanda custer back ms samantha bozzer ms christina carroll and ms nicole pelesky mrs jani graduated from hollidaysburg school district in 2003 she attended college at temple university where she received a bachelor of science degree in elementary and special education in 2007 mrs jani earned her master s degree in reading from saint joseph s university she is a certified reading specialist teaching fhoss and title 1 reading ms rhoades is a graduate of bishop carroll high school and the university of pittsburgh at johnstown where she received her bachelor of science degree in elementary education in 2008 she continued her education at indiana university of pennsylvania where she received a master of science degree in speech-language pathology in 2011 ms rhoades provides speech and language therapy at the elementary middle and high schools ms bafile is a graduate of forest hills high school she attended college at the university of pittsburgh at johnstown where she received her bachelor of science degree in elementary education k-6 she teaches first grade at the elementary school mrs daly originally from friedens pa graduated from north star high school in 2007 she attended slippery rock university of pennsylvania and graduated with a bachelors of science degree in special and elementary education in 2011 mrs daly is the new 6th grade learning support teacher mrs layman is a graduate of forest hills high school she graduated in 2010 from pennsylvania state university with a bachelor s degree in communication sciences and disorders and recently graduated from indiana university of pennsylvania with her master s degree in speech-language pathology she provides speech and language therapy services to students at the elementary school and is the assistant coach for the varsity girls volleyball team ms custer is a graduate of forest hills high school and is a 2011 graduate of saint francis university where she received her bachelor of science degree in elementary education special education she lives in south fork she is a learning support teacher for kindergarten and first grade ms bozzer is from indiana pa and is a 2007 graduate of indiana area high school she attended the university of pittsburgh at johnstown and received a bachelor s degree in elementary education in 2011 she also holds a minor in history ms bozzer teaches 3rd grade ms carroll is from greensburg pa and is a 2007 graduate of hempfield area high school she attended indiana university of pennsylvania and received a bachelor s degree in elementary education in 2011 holding a concentration in reading she returned to the same university and received a master s degree in literacy and a reading specialist certification in 2012 ms carroll teaches 2nd grade ms pelesky is a 2008 graduate of north star high school and a 2011 graduate of indiana university of pennsylvania where she received her bachelor of science degree in health and physical education ms pelesky also has her safety and driver s education certificate she teaches physical education at the elementary school and is the girls varsity volleyball coach 5

art i students engage in contemporary street art practice during september 2012 while brazilian street artist bel borba participated in a month long public art residency in new york city dr motter s art i students created their own public art projects in the middle school parking lot after studying graffiti artwork and street artists art 1 students collaboratively designed group chalk murals in order to send positive messages see http www.fhsd.k12.pa.us/page/4063 to a larger and more diverse audience than their classmates students murals began as white contour line drawings as artist and social activist keith haring used in new york city subways the murals then transformed into 3-d illusions as students added color shading and shadow to their imagery and text mural messages ranged from promoting physical activity to calling for anti-drug awareness to remembering 9/11 victims and survivors seventh and eighth grade students enrolled in dr motter s art classes had an opportunity to view the murals and participate in public art making by `tagging the parking lot with their artist signatures drawn in chalk reflecting on the group chalk mural project ninth grade student kaitlyn kline said it was a really good idea morgan cronauer kline s group mate commented it was good team work fellow group member gage mccall declared we had fun seventh and eighth grade students online comment postings on the art 7 and 8 blogs see http www.fhsd.k12.pa.us/page/4061 and http www.fhsd.k12.pa.us/page/4062 supported these sentiments the chalk murals were intended to send positive visual messages to the public and provide students with a new exciting art experience this art i project also promoted the forest hills middle school art program and encouraged students to consider art i as a ninth grade elective as the new middle school art teacher dr motter plans to continue to expose students to unique opportunities for meaningful artistic expression above alexis loya ashley cowdery jordan miller and megan facciani are proud of their street art depicting an anti-drug theme ian slifko jordan schrock alex hook dallas mcclintock and ryan dibble above work on their football street art running program grant awarded to fhes again for the second consecutive year the forest hills elementary school was one of 50 recipients from 27 states across the nation to receive a grant of $2,500 to inspire students to be more active and adopt healthy choices to carry into adulthood in its fourth year the ing run for something better school award program presented by financial services leader ing us is helping to introduce students across the country to the benefits of running and an active lifestyle through school-based running programs the elementary running program has 106 participants in grades four through six these students will participate in an eight to ten week program that provides them with one day of cardiovascular games one day of drills and relays and another day of distance running each week in addition to their weekly runs students will participate in a monthly event designed to keep them excited about the program and focused on their fitness throughout the course of the from left asst principal mr jacobs year the school day stomp the annual 1.5 mile cross country race and the pumpkin run a fall-themed outdoor obstacle course are two superintendent mr bowser ing rep ms popular events from last year that will be held again this october and ogden pe teachers mr carpenter ms pelesky and principal mr lashinsky november 6

elementary walk-a-thon and balloon launch the pto held their annual walk-a-thon fundraiser on thursday october 4th each student was asked to collect $35 in pledges to reach a goal of $35,385 this year the pto decided on a travel theme for the walk the students and staff took a journey across the united states stopping at 5 landmark stations along their way including mount rushmore the golden gate bridge the grand canyon kennedy space center and the statue of liberty the morning pre-k classes were given a balloon to release at the end of their walk all other students participated in a school wide eco-friendly balloon release at 2:45 p.m from the football stadium attached to each balloon was a card asking that the finder return it to the elementary school we look forward to seeing how far the balloons traveled returned cards will be posted on a board at the elementary school morning pre-k students let balloons fly mobile ag lab fourth grade students visited the pennsylvania mobile agricultural lab during one week in october students learned through the scientific process about pennsylvania s valuable agricultural products the lab provided the students with hands on science activities they enjoyed tasting chocolate making milk into butter learning the importance of pure juice products and determined the dna of bananas this hands-on approach to learning always creates new revelations for the students into the world of science mr krestar s class is pictured here at the lab first grade walkers ben harteis left and tyler tirko third grade architects while reading pop s bridge mrs faith s 3rd grade class became very interested in the various types of bridges and how they were constructed the story was centers around the construction of the golden gate bridge a suspension bridge in san francisco california that took 4 years to build it was known as the impossible bridge because it was so difficult and dangerous to build there were fierce winds and strong currents which made it dangerous for the workers the children also researched arch bridges beam bridges and truss bridges as a culminating project they each constructed a bridge and submitted a report on the bridge that they made karlie ondrejik christopher ramirez samantha heilmann luke dierling and morgan phillips show off their bridges in the picture here kindles for ms readers students at forest hills middle school are reading in a new way this year with the addition of a class set of kindle touch e-readers students in all three grades will have the opportunity to read novels short stories poems and articles on the new kindles throughout the year the kindle touch has a variety of useful features that allow students to practice active reading including the ability to highlight and make notes on the page the most useful feature however is the ability to touch any word on the screen and get an instant definition and list of synonyms this feature allows students to read and understand works that are above their comprehension level 7

opt-out of participating in certain school activities the protection of pupil rights amendment ppra 20 u.s.c § 1232h requires the forest hills school district to notify you and obtain consent or allow you to opt your child out of participating in certain school activities these activities include a student survey analysis or evaluation that contains one or more of the following eight areas i.e protected information surveys affords parents and students who are 18 years old or emancipated minors i.e eligible students certain rights regarding our conduct of surveys collection and use of information for marketing purposes and certain physical exams these include the right to 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 political affiliations or beliefs of the student or student s parents mental or psychological problems of the student or student s family sex behavior or attitudes illegal anti-social self-incriminating or demeaning behavior critical appraisals of others with whom respondents have close family relationships legally recognized privileged relationships such as with lawyers doctors or ministers religious practices affiliations or beliefs of the student or student s parents income other than as required by law to determine program eligibility this requirement also applies to the collection disclosure or use of student information for marketing purposes i.e marketing surveys and certain physical exams and screenings activities requiring parental notice and consent or opt-out for the upcoming school year will be sent home prior to the administration of any surveys please note that this notice and consent or opt-out transfers from parents to any student who is 18 years of age or older or an emancipated minor under state law esea title i parent participation plan it is the goal of the forest hills school district s title i program to develop partnerships with the home parents and teachers working as partners increase student achievement and promote positive attitudes about school it is the intent of the following plan to encourage and promote just such a relationship in accordance with the u.s education department s regulations for esea title i and the district s title i parent involvement policy 918 the following guidelines concerning consultation with parents and teachers shall be effective 1 each child s parents shall be notified in a timely manner that their child has been selected to participate in the title i program and why the child has been selected 2 conferences including telephone conferences shall be established between individual parents and teachers parents shall also be invited to attend at the forest hills school district s title i program expense state and regional conferences designed to increase their knowledge regarding relevant title i issues 3 timely information shall be provided concerning the title i program including program plans and evaluation through a minimum of at least one annual meeting additional meetings as needed may be requested by parents 4 parents suggestions shall be solicited regarding the planning development and operation of the title i program 5 consultation shall be conducted with parents about cooperation in achieving the program s objectives 6 an annual evaluation shall be conducted to determine the effectiveness of the parent participation plan approved by the board of school directors august 10 2005 parental concern/complaint procedure the forest hills school district is dedicated to meeting the educational needs of our students and is constantly working to ensure that your child receives the best possible education to ensure that the educational needs of students are being met a strong educational program and communication between school and home must be maintained for every student in the event that a concern or complaint arises parents/guardians will follow the chain of command listed below to have the concern/complaint ad dressed step 1 meet with the teacher if the concern/complaint is not resolved step 2 meet with the principal/assistant principal if the concern/complaint is not resolved step 3 meet with the director of education if the concern/complaint is not resolved step 4 meet with the superintendent if the concern/complaint is not resolved the parent/guardian may then choose to address the board of school directors regarding the concern/complaint 11

notice to parent of unsafe school choice the federal no child left behind act of 2001 section 9532 requires that all children who attend a persistently dangerous school or become the victim of a violent criminal offense while at school have the opportunity to transfer to another school building within the district including a public charter school that is not a persistently dangerous school according to the commonwealth of pennsylvania a violent criminal offense includes the following offenses set forth in title 18 of the pennsylvania consolidated statutes kidnapping robbery aggravated assault upon the student rape involuntary deviate sexual intercourse sexual assault aggravated indecent assault indecent assault or attempt to commit homicide murder or voluntary manslaughter a victim is defined by the state of pa as the student against whom a violent criminal offense has been perpetrated under these standards a persistently dangerous school means any public school that meets the following criteria in the most recent school year and in one additional year of the two years prior to the most recent school year 1 for a school whose enrollment is 250 or less at least 5 dangerous incidents 2 for a school whose enrollment is 251 to 1000 a number of dangerous incidents that represents at least 2 of the school s enrollment and 3 for a school whose enrollment is over 1000 20 or more dangerous incidents all school districts that have a school building designated as persistently dangerous under these standards must submit a corrective action plan to the pa department of education and they will provide assistance to those districts and monitor their progress in implementing the corrective action plans the pa department of education will reassess each school building s designation as persistently dangerous at the end of the school year during which the corrective action plan is completed in pennsylvania if your child has been a victim of a violent crime while in or on school grounds of the public elementary or secondary school he or she attends he or she must be offered the opportunity to transfer to a safe public school building within the district including a public charter school in order for a student victim to be entitled to a transfer the violent criminal offense first must be reported to law enforcement authorities by the student the student s parent or guardian or school officials within ten 10 calendar days of receiving notice of the violent criminal offense the school district will notify the student victim that he or she has the right to transfer to a safe public elementary or secondary school within the district including a public charter school the notification and offer to transfer shall state that no student is required to transfer to another school but has the option to do so the student victim or his/her parent or guardian must apply to the district to transfer within 30 calendar days after the incident is reported to school authorities upon receipt of an application to transfer the school district will transfer the student as soon as possible but in no more than ten 10 calendar days after receiving the application when considering a student s request to transfer to another school the school district will take into account the particular needs of the student and the parent to the extent possible the school district will allow the student to transfer to a school building that is making adequate yearly progress and one that is not identified as being in school improvement corrective action or restructuring a charter school only has to accept a student who meets its admission criteria if space is available if there is not another safe school within the school district to which students may transfer the school district is encouraged but not required to establish an agreement with a neighboring school district to accept the transfer of students if you have any questions regarding student programs each year more than 800,000 school-age children in the united states experience homelessness the federal no child left behind act of 2001 includes a provision to make sure that homelessness does not cause these children to be left behind in school homeless children should have access to the education and other services that they need to meet the same challenging state academic achievement standards to which all students are held the forest hills school district is required to provide activities for and services to homeless children 15 including preschool-age homeless children and youths enabling them to enroll in attend and succeed in school or preschool programs the law requires all school districts to inform parents or guardians of their rights under this provision of nclb specifically it states that pending resolution of a dispute about school placement a school district must immediately enroll a homeless student in the student s school of origin or other school selected on the basis of the child s best interest and provide a written explanation of the rights of appeal to the parent or guardian of the student.
