overfishing infographic this work was developed as part of an intermediate visual communication design class where we were asked to create an infographic which explored a subject of our choice through two panels i chose to look at the issue of overfishing the united states exploring the topic at a national level as well as a local level expansion of us fishing grounds in 1976 the magnusen-stevens fishery conservation act was passed by congress it expanded federal jurisdiction of fisheries from 12 to 200 miles o shore in response to global fishing fleets moving closer to the united states how overfishing a ects the fish population and the catch 20,000 1:2 ratio gulf of maine atlantic cod commerical catch cod catch 17,781 cod population 32,269 advancements in fishing gear leading to higher catches in order to take advantage of the seemingly limitless amount of fish in the sea gear was improved so that fishermen could easily catch mass amounts of fish more aggressive and less selective fishing a race for fish launching fishermen into competition to catch as much as they can while they can a 1:2 ratio of catch to population in 1991 set a trend for severe overfishing which led to a decrease in the cod population this decrease set the stage for a 91 decrease in the cod catch over the following 8 years 15,000 the total weight of fish in metric tons a need for increased fishery management regulations put in place by regional fishery councils include shortened seasons size regulations and gear regulations in hopes of rebuilding or maintaining fish populations 1:2.5 ratio cod catch 7,194 cod population 17,995 a 1:2.5 ratio of catch to population in 1996 indicated a small raise in the cod population but still showed that the trend of overfishing was occurring 10,000 more bycatch the unintentional catching and killing of other species 1:3 ratio cod catch 7,527 cod population 23,292 5,000 a 1:3 ratio of catch to population in 1987 followed the decreasing trend that had been established years before however there was a large group of cod born in 1987 that boosted the cod population leading to a population spike in 1991 overfishing 1:12.5 ratio cod catch 1,636 cod population 19,759 a 1:12.5 ratio of catch to population in 1999 was due to the rebuilding goals that were set this limited fishermen to catching 200 lbs/day in the beginning of may dropped down to 30 lbs/day by the end of may and then taken back up to 100 lbs/day by august go 0 1985 1990 1995 2000 fish the cycle of overfishing in the united states fish are a valuable resource in america the fishing industry adds over $1 billion to the economy annually and provides approximately 2 millions jobs however many species of fish are overfished to a level that is unsustainable and a trend of overfishing has developed that could leave our oceans empty all what is overfishing overfishing is the catching of fish faster than nature can replace them this weakens fish populations as well as the ocean ecosystems in the united states the populations of 230 di erent species of fish are measured to determine if they are below a sustainable level overfished currently 1 in 4 species are already overfished and 1 in 5 are becoming overfished stepping up to the plate how to break the cycle americans can help by making responsible choices when eating seafood by choosing fish that are at a sustainable level over those that are overfished the demand for overfished species is lessened so that they have a better chance to rebuild to a sustainable level caught up the evolution of overfishing the gulf of maine atlantic cod the gulf of maine atlantic cod used to be one of the most plentiful fish in new england and was once a staple of their economy but due to severe overfishing the atlantic cod population is only a small fraction of what it once was although management of cod has improved in recent years it is unlikely that the population will ever fully rebuild 1 out of 4 fish species are already overfished dragging up a mess not quite there yet although the atlantic cod population has been on the rise it is still considered overfished to be considered sustainable it must reach a point where there are enough fish in the population to provide a maximum catch while also maintaining the population size currently the population is less then half of what it needs to be eat this 1 out of 5 fish species are becoming overfished destroying cod habitats with harmful gear a significant amount of the atlantic cod fished in the gulf of maine are caught with otter trawls this gear consists of a large net that drags along the seabed acting as a giant plow scooping up fish as it is towed by the boat this damages the ocean floor habitat of the atlantic cod because it also crushes and digs up the ocean floor environment haddock sole flounder sustainable population 82,830 metric tons total weight of population current population why is overfishing a problem for the united states the high consumption rates of seafood the united states is one of the top consumers of seafood in world surpassed only by japan and china in 2008 the us consumed 5 billion pounds of seafood which is equal to 16 lbs per person us fishermen cannot actually supply for this high of a demand and because of it the us imports over 80 of the seafood it consumes annually this high importation rate coupled with a very low exportation rate resulted in a trade deficit on seafood of $9.9 billion in 2008 a cost that continues to rise the fishing industry also provides over 2 million jobs as fisheries collapse so do the local communities which they support in the 1990 s when the new england cod fishery collapsed 20,000 jobs were lost and the local economy experienced a serious decline the 2 million jobs supplied by the fishing industry are enough to employ everyone in the state of maine bluefish wild alaskan salmon before trawling after trawling not this smaller fish to fry reduced fish size means reduced reproduction in cod 72 imported bluefin tuna chilean sea bass toothfish red snapper importing 80 of the seafood consumed in the us has resulted in a $9.9 million trade deficit grouper black sea bass one major reason for overfishing of atlantic cod is that the smaller fish that currently make up the majority of the cod population cannot reproduce as much as the larger fish that used to be plentiful this is due to the fact that cod are being fished at a rate that does not allow them to fully mature before they are caught before overfishing a 52 cod lays 10 million eggs per year during overfishing a 32 cod only lays 2 million eggs per year 33,877 metric tons
