inner west whispers local gossip rumour hearsay and unsubstantiated fact latte leftie we are c!ao satire for the soul latte leftie provides a grovelling apology for his unthinking endorsement of a misogynist after-dinner speaker dear ll i refer you to your recent column where you alleged tony abbott was in the habit of summoning his wife and daughters at home by striking a large gong screaming out show us ya tits when driving past well-endowed young women in his comcar sniffing the chairs of female members of his shadow cabinet after they d left the room and in cahoots with archbishop pell to create a religious police force exclusively staffed by members of opus dei with the power to arrest any woman seen out in public without her husband or father while i have no doubt that everything you said in that column was true i was disturbed to discover you recently attended an australian education union dinner at which catherine deveny made an off-colour joke involving tony abbott being the stringy meat in the middle of a janet albrechtsen and angela shanahan sandwich while i have as good a sense of humour as any feminist you should see my prized collection of fridge magnets with hilarious slogans such as `when god created man she was only joking it is appallingly sexist behaviour to fail to walk out when a quip involving anything other than the antediluvian mindset of the pope the media s promotion of unrealistic body images or the tragic fate of upper middle class first world women denied the basic human right of a seat on a major corporate board is made i look forward to an explanation of how you propose to make amends for your rampant misogyny lysistra the womyn s room sydney university ll replies mea culpa mea maxima culpa lysistra i accept setting up a weekend getaway in haberfield and living in mosman during the week after spending all weekend lounging about haberfield s cafés eating gelato and drinking coffee in the name of research however we can confirm that del piero was somewhere else l speaking of haberfield it s sad to see an empty space where colefax chocolates once stood on ramsay rd what will take its place we re betting it s another gourmet gem and just hope that they hire better decorators than other newcomer cafes in the area did someone say formula 1 guess who don t sue l which five dock eatery is keeping tight-lipped about opening a second restaurant in balmain l which local real estate agent made the suggestion to buyers that poisoning the trees of an abbotsford apartment block might gain them a community life the scoop on where to get cones summer is rapidly approaching and i can hear the screams already i scream you scream we all scream for ice cream so where should you go to get the biggest scoops and the best flavours the inner west options are almost endless wareemba trovatino café home to the newtown gelato massi friendly service reasonable prices and a decent range of sixteen flavours the walnut choc crumble didn t exactly blow my mind but that s just poor choice on my part it was still good gelato most flavours are traditional though there are a few curve balls thrown in like the black sesame gelato chocolate lovers will also appreciate three varieties of chocolate dark bitter belgian and brownie 3/5 gelato blue with over thirty flavours on offer gelato blue have the most variety and are one of the most creative when it comes to flavour combinations however they are also the priciest two scoops set me back a shocking $8.50 saying that the pear and salted caramel is a real treat with subtle pear flavour complemented by a huge drizzling of caramel and the caramelised fig and cinnamon is delicious with a hint of spice in the aftertaste both were like gourmet desserts in a paper cup 4/5 r oad test rant could the inner west soon embrace its most famous son in my last column i pointed out that alan jones was for a time one of the few right-wingers happy to make the inner west his home but he s by no means the most prominent conservative to have ties to this area anyone who s read the opening chapters of john howard s best-selling biography lazarus rising will be struck by just how formative an influence the inner west had on a man who most would assume was the archetypal north shore liberal howard s father s family hailed from petersham his mother s from summer hill and his parents were married at marrickville s presbyterian church famously howard snr had a garage at dulwich hill at which young john worked for free resulting in an embrace of what australia s 25th prime minister himself characterises as the lower middle-class mindset of the striving but not particularly successful small businessman granted the inner west was a lot different back then and howard was born into the area rather than choosing to live here it s also true howard eventually moved to wollstonecraft where he s lived for the past four decades still i wonder when plaques will start appearing around the inner west marking the sacred sites of howard s youth the place where his father s garage stood the houses if they re still around his mother and father grew up in the school he attended award-winning yoghurt gelato which is fantastic i d also like to put in a good word for the more decadent flavours i went with a scoop of snickers yes it tastes exactly like a snickers bar chocolate crunchy nuts and all and nutella nougat which has a thick frozen layer of nutella on top that goes delightfully gooey as it melts $4 for a single scoop or $6 for a double but for a buck extra i d get a triple treat 7.50 4/5 haberfield rino saffioti on the 32-degree day i visited i was feeling like something fresh and fruity to pep me up and cool me down two scoops of mango and lemon gelato were just what the doctor ordered though i usually prefer fruity flavours as a sorbet this creamier icy treat was smooth and tasty $4.80 will buy you two small scoops of rino s gelato where the selection is small but quality is good 3.5/5 dolcissimo a favourite in haberfield for ice cream though the flavours tend to be standard and often double up in the window the servings are generous and the taste is good if you re passing by in peak summer season go for a traditional italian granita 3/5 a mellow yellow summer treat leichhardt il gelaterie of course the gelato here is up to scratch this is what they do all year round they generally have 24 flavours and the classics like chocolate lemon and hazelnut never disappoint if you re after something a little different i wouldn t go past their new grape zappos flavour sweet with chewy bits of purple zappo lollies every lick took me back to my school days when a 40c packet of zappos was my regular order at the canteen 4.5/5 enmore cow and the moon this cool gelato café has a choice of nine sorbets and sixteen gelatos including traditional and innovative flavours they also offer the best value for money you can get two flavours in the generous `small serving for just $4.50 you can t go wrong with any of the flavours but if you re a sweet tooth try the merango tango which tastes like a lemon meringue pie or the malto bliss which is similar to a mars bar both are super flavoursome with chunky bits of meringue and chocolate respectively if you re in the market for a sorbet go for the blood orange 5/5 n nm both julia gillard and leichhardt s own tireless tribune of the workers paul howes have recently spoken highly of certain aspects of howard s character and leadership the short answer is of course no time soon the inner west was howard hater central during the last liberal government with local dinner parties consumed by the question of how the rodent kept getting elected when no inner westie lived near or even knew anyone willing to admit voting for him nonetheless there are two factors that could result in the inner west coming to embrace howard in the future the first is simply the gentrifying of the area increasingly what were labour councils or more recently labour-greens councils will become liberal councils well-disposed to celebrating the man whose only rival in the pantheon of liberal heroes is menzies more interestingly some on the left have begun to express some praise for howard both julia gillard and leichhardt s own tireless tribune of the workers paul howes have spoken highly of certain aspects of howard s character and leadership in recent weeks while it might seem incredible the left would change their view on a man they spent so much time and energy damning for so many years such a volte-face is hardly unprecedented malcolm fraser once regarded as an anti-christ for engineering the dismissal of labor god gough whitlam is now awareness of the hardships faced by the most disadvantaged in our community and was pleased that the council aids these valuable community organisations on a good day down by the cooks river when the water is clear and wildlife active you can almost imagine what it would ve been like in times past many years ago inner westies used the river as a picnic and swimming spot but as pollution from industrial and urban activity increased the swimmers disappeared and nowadays recreational activities are limited to the parks and paths that border the river while much has been done to restore the river people are often shocked to discover that sewage contamination remains an issue while many other sydney rivers have viable swimming locations there are none along the cooks river a situation that gayle adams of the cooks river valley association crva finds unacceptable and is working to change since the crva began water testing in 2007 volunteers have clocked up 180 test sessions and not seen an overall improvement in water quality to give us an idea of the health of the river we compare our test results with government water quality guidelines provided by sydney water in its streamwatch manual from the point of view of swimming in the river the frequent high e.coli levels are a major concern they indicate sewage contamination from sewer leaks and overflows and possibly illegal private stormwater connections to the sewer says gayle in an effort to make the river safe for swimming again crva have petitioned the state government to upgrade the poor sewage infrastructure in the cooks river catchment the petition was presented to linda burney mp for canterbury who has in turn presented it to the nsw parliament the issue has been now referred to the minister for primary industries and is awaiting response no one knows exactly when the river will be safe for swimming again but gayle has high hopes saying she will continue to work for a future where swimming in the river is a reality marrickville s 2021 vision includes swimming in the river and we will be working with marrickville council to make it happen locals can help by becoming a
