springston school a 16-20 leeston road springston 7616 p 03-329-5724 f 03-329-5731 e office@springston.school.nz w www.springston.school.nz b springstonschoolnews.blogspot.com october 19 2012 from the principal tn koutou katoa welcome back to term 4 i have no doubt the next nine weeks will race by in a blur as we cross things off the list in the countdown to christmas we launch into things next week with athletic sports for years 4-8 followed by camps at hanmer springs and peel forest the important dates section of the newsletter has all the key diary entries for you national standards while i was away at conference at the end of last term the ministry of education published the 2011 national standards data on its `education counts website the following link will take you to the springston page http www.educationcounts.govt.nz/find-a-school/school/profile?school=3516 while we are pleased that our results exceed the ministry expectations as you look at these figures please understand these things about the data the standards are not based on any standardised measure they are an overall teacher judgement otj against a somewhat confusing set of criteria there is no consistency in the way schools are reporting so please keep this in mind if you do decide to make comparisons between schools based on this data what the data can not show you is the progress made by children who may not be reaching the standard we know that this progress is due to the amazing efforts of our reading recovery teacher our teacher aides support staff volunteer reading tutors parents grandparents aunties uncles older siblings and indeed by the children themselves as well as the efforts of the classroom teachers to develop iprogrammes to meet individual children s needs then there are people like karen winter who strives to make our library attractive and exciting and carol kendal who drives the integration of digital technology to help motivate children teacher are not worried about being accountable but they are worried about misleading information being communicated our staff have good information about your child and are always willing to talk to you specifically about your child s progress if you have any concerns about the published data please come and talk to us ng mihi ki a koutou katoa liz weir principal november parent seminar `team teaching the final in our 2012 `connect series of teacher only day monday november 19th seminars will take place on thursday november 8th between 9 and 10.30 a.m this will be following the recently released proposals for school closures followed by morning tea please join us if you and mergers the minister of education has mandated a would like to know more about team teaching teacher only day for all schools in the `rejuvenate category or co-teaching as it is called in other schools our cluster which includes lincoln ladbrooks and greenpark falls into this category and we are currently please rsvp to helen.hogarth@springston.school.nz working on a proposal regarding the future of schooling in our area if a morning meeting does not suit you please email liz.weir@springston.school.nz and we will along with lincoln primary and lincoln high we will be schedule an evening seminar if there are sufficient closed on monday november 19th numbers.
