issue 4 november 2009 welcome welcome to this special christmas edition of the mfl sunderland primary newsletter read on to find some ideas to help you to teach your foreign language during this festive period previous editions of the newsletter can be found on the mfl sunderland website just follow the link on the homepage if you have any news articles or resources that you would like to share via subsequent issues of the newsletter please email them to clare.seccombe@gmail.com joyeux noël ¡feliz navidad intercultural understanding christmas provides us with an ideal opportunity to address intercultural understanding the ks2 mfl framework s intercultural understanding strand has some specific ideas iu4.1 learn about festivals and celebrations in different cultures · listen to authentic songs linked to celebrations · learn about festivals in other countries and how these festivals are celebrated · learn to say simple phrases of celebration e.g to welcome the new year iu6.3 present information about an aspect of culture · plan a cultural celebration e.g concert of songs dances performance of a traditional story · create a multi-media presentation to present information about another culture · produce a leaflet about an aspect of the country/countries studied studying christmas traditions in other countries can also be a springboard to some more general work on other countries and cultures for example iu3.2 locate some countries where the language to be studied is spoken · locate the country and identify the capital city and main towns · identify well-known landmarks · find out about the weather conditions and how they might affect the lives of the people living there here is a resource that will help you to do this http www.sunderlandschools.org/international/advent-calendar.htm it s an online advent calendar each day s page shows happy christmas in another language facts about how christmas is celebrated in another country or culture and some follow-up questions for pupils and of course you can use this work as one of the three activities for your foundation tier international school award there is more information about the international school award here http www.sunderlandschools.org/international/for_schools_isa.htm
