inner west whispers local gossip rumour hearsay and unsubstantiated fact latte leftie we are c!ao satire for the soul the increasingly embattled latte leftie comes out swinging against the lynch mob of cyber-bullies seeking to silence him dear ll as a long-term fan i d like to go on the record as stating that i don t see what the big deal is with you telling a crowd of sydney university resistance members that tony abbott s sister turned into an unabashed mussel-masher out of the shame caused by his intransigence on the gay marriage issue while waving a strap-on dildo around and running your tongue lasciviously between your ring and index fingers i note that much of the ensuing hysterical reportage failed to mention it was a charity event and you were engaging in some lighthearted banter in between auctioning che guevara t-shirts and noam chomsky box sets while acting as the unpaid mc of a fundraising event for hugo chavez s re-election campaign i ve been disgusted with the vicious campaign that has been waged against you and i for one will never be darkening the door of that gutless newtown bicycle shop and erstwhile ciao advertiser that demanded the return of the free razor scooter it had supplied for your use alan bennelong ll replies i should start by apologising unreservedly to mr abbott and his sister in the course of doing that i am obviously obliged to point out 1 i was only passing on what someone had told me so it was in fact a community service announcement of sorts 2 i never would have been forced into making the remark if tony abbott was not the parlimentary equivalent of that murderous albino monk from the da vinci code 3 it s a very short step from taking away a man s razor scooter to punish him for making vicious gratuitous jokes relating to a politician s relative to burning him at the stake for his cherished political beliefs and 4 i will not be lectured about homophobia by this man i will not not now not ever indeed even as anti-clerical heterosexual i was deeply offended on behalf of all safe-sex attracted catholic priests when mr abbott made jokes about having to avoid being taken advantage of in the seminary n email community life who is the king of kebabs any kebab tastes like an angel crying on your tongue at 3am in the morning after a 15 beer entree but which purveyors of middle eastern fare still stand up in the sober light of day before i ve even left the house on a saturday night i m already looking forward to the end of the evening because the best part of a night out on the town is the pit stop for a late-night bite on the way home there s nothing more satisfying than hoeing into a kebab at 3am after working up an appetite on the dance floor without a second thought about the garlic breath that s sure to follow however while there are plenty of options around the city for late-night eats where are the late night kebab joints closer to home and which can be vouched for here are a few we tried while sober well mostly for a more accurate review r oad test rant the dark side of social media `justice could #destroyingthejoint end up well destroying the joint it s alan jones today but it might be any of us tomorrow hard as it is to believe alan jones was once one of the inner west s best-known residents before relocating to the toaster he had a pad in newtown and used to occasionally hold court at the marly where the then premier bob carr used to dispatch potential police ministers to be vetted and please god given the regal seal of approval by sydney s undisputed king of the airwaves and who among us could have imagined back in those days that carr cringe-inducingly desperate to keep jones and his print equivalent the daily telegraph onside would ever be remonstrating with alan et tu bob very few of the parrot s erstwhile neighbours would be feeling any sympathy for him at present but students of history particularly mao s cultural revolution might be a little uneasy about what putatively spontaneous `people s uprisings which are now easier than ever to organise via social media can lead to here s my prediction jones won t be sacked his ratings will if anything go up most of the advertisers winning plaudits for abandoning him in the heat of the current media firestorm will quietly return to his program a few months down the track and his many blue-collar listeners who already feel marginalised will come to believe even more strongly and not entirely unjustifiably that the mainstream media is not only uninterested in their concerns but outright hostile to them istanbul on king what i like most about istanbul on king street is that when you walk in there after a night of partying they keep the party atmosphere going as you await your kebab it s always busy and has lively music playing along with some bizarre video clip the chicken and beef kebabs are both good and everything is quite fresh as customer turnover is high especially on weekends istanbul is open till 1am weeknights and 4am on weekends prices range from $7.90 to $13.90 3.5/5 there s nothing worse than a badly wrapped kebab victoria yeeros darling kebabs i ve stopped off at this place for a bite after many a balmain pub crawl and have enjoyed the pide and the chicken kebabs my experience was rather different during the day though when i tried a basic beef kebab and found the filling clumped in the centre of the bread which was not well wrapped but rather just folded in half while i usually commend generous serves this thing was overflowing and quickly got soggy and messy but i guess you don t really notice that after a beer or six open till midnight on weeknights and 3am on fridays and saturdays prices start at $5 for a vegie kebab and go up from there 1/5 brothers kebabs burgers this unassuming take-away shop which has been in business for nine years is surprisingly busy and their lamb kebabs are delicious the meat has a wonderful char-grilled flavour they use toasted pita bread that s tightly wrapped and easy to eat without having the kebab fall apart on you and the salad fillings are fresh and crisp mine was a little light on cheese and tomato but no one gets a kebab for the salad anyway it s all about the meat here open till 2am on weeknights 4am on weekends and midnight on sundays you can get a kebab chips and drink for $15 4/5 i know yeeros aren t technically `kebabs but they re the greek version and victoria yeeros is definitely worth a mention after being in business in marrickville for three decades people still rave about it i wasn t disappointed by my lamb yeeros made on crisp toasted pita bread with heaps of succulent slightly salty but very tasty lamb onion lettuce tomato tzatziki and a little sprinkling of chilli powder the meat is spicier and more flavoursome than the others i tried though prices are more expensive open weeknights until midnight and 2am on weekends a lamb yeeros costs around $9.90 depending on what you put in it 4/5 n nm a feast of entertainment marrickville festival is set to attract a crowd of thousands again this year with plenty on offer for the whole family this year s festival will be bursting with exciting entertainment for young and old including band performances martial arts demos and roving buskers the festival will feature a `war of words stage where comedians and poets will battle it out armed only with words plus an international dance floor showcasing 15 dance groups throughout the day among them amera s belly dancing dulwich primary aboriginal dancers and latin motion meanwhile the kids play park located in calvert street car park off illawarra road is guaranteed to keep younger festivalgoers busy with a climbing wall jumping castle and magic show foodies will also be impressed as hundreds of international cuisine stalls line the streets and fill hungry bellies get in on all the fun on sunday 21st october from 11am to 5pm and don t miss one of the most anticipated dates on the inner west s social calendar n where marrickville and illawarra roads marrickville jones won t be sacked his ratings will go up the advertisers will quietly return to his program nothing will change so yes the kind of people many inner westies included who never listened to jones in the first place will get to revel in schadenfreude signing petitions and tut-tutting to like-minded friends but nothing is likely to change apart from the shock jock and presumably every other public figure and who knows even private citizens now having to assume their remarks are being secretly recorded 24/7 for future use against them should they ever say anything out of order in a week or two another celebrity will send out a drunkenly abusive tweet and the moral outrage media circus will move on but it s alan jones you cry he deserves it well maybe but the problem with lynch mobs is that while they might be all good fun while they re chasing after the `right targets they have a tendency to spiral out of control and turn on those who ve done little to deserve being strung up in the public square just make sure everything you ever say print tweet or text can t be misinterpreted or even deliberatly turned against you those social media campaigns may not be such a hoot if the bloodthirsty mob has turned on you what s on compiled by nancy merlo email
