nano-engineering tu/e a good choice high quality of education and research leading position in international university rankings excellent student facilities international contacts with leading universities eindhoven is a modern student city region of eindhoven technology hotspot in the netherlands paul lumens when i decided to do my master s at tu/e after completing my bachelor s an important aspect for me was that research here focuses on new technologies and applications and that proved to be true you re involved in research right from the start of the program that s exactly what i wanted because i d like to be able to contribute later to the development of high-tech products working on a nano-scale is very interesting you re always looking for something new working at the limits of what s possible today but you keep in mind what you ll be able to do with it later i find that link to practical applications very important in my graduation project i m involved in the entire process from design to producing new structures on an atomic scale it s only now that i realize how much i ve learned during the program because i have to apply all my knowledge and skills in my graduation project i don t regret choosing this program for a moment it s a good program with a lot of room to make your own choices and apart from studying there are also lots of other activities for example the study association organizes a trip to another country each year i helped to arrange the trip to japan that was a unique opportunity to broaden my horizon the entire `chain of knowledge from fundamental theories and experiments right up to analyzing constructing and manipulating structures on a nanometer scale internship opportunities in the first year of your special master s track you will carry out a project over a period of two to three months in a company in the netherlands or another country or at a university in another country this internship may be of a theoretical or practical nature although a combination of both is also possible a final internship forms the major part of the second year during this internship you will work independently on a large project on a topic related to nanoscience and technology you can choose to carry out the project within tu/e or radboud university nijmegen at another university or in a company in the netherlands or another country research profile of the departments the special master s track in nano-engineering at tu/e formally forms part of the master s program in applied physics within applied physics it is embedded in the functional nano materials track this track includes research in the areas of photonics spintronics and nanomagnetism semiconductors polymers molecular materials and nano-engineering and devices there is a similar track within chemical engineering called molecular engineering which focuses on the design synthesis characterization and possible applications of complex molecules the aim is to introduce new molecular concepts in the field of chemistry requirements for admission there are a number of general requirements for admission to master s degree programs and special master s tracks · you must have a relevant bachelor s degree or equivalent based on a program of sufficient academic level and quality to enable you to complete the tu/e master s degree program or special master s track to which you wish to be admitted · you must be able to demonstrate sufficient command of the language in which the program or track is taught all tu/e master s degree programs and special master s tracks are taught in english · to prove sufficient command of the english language you should submit an academic ielts or toefl test for the scores or exemptions you can contact the international relations office io@tue.nl or visit www.tue.nl/masterprograms · there may be additional specific requirements for specific programs or tracks also depending on the nature of your prior education more information visit www.tue.nl/masterprograms cooperation with other universities for this track tu/e works closely together with radboud university nijmegen graduation options the special master s track in nano-engineering has five subtracks the first is functional nanomaterials and devices this involves research into new and/or improved properties optical electrical magnetic of materials which are structured on a nanometer scale alternatively you can specialize in selforganized nanostructures which involves the application of self-organization for the assembly of complex structures of elementary entities you can also graduate in nanoprobing and -manipulation this involves the development and application of `scanning-probe techniques for observing and controlling materials at an atomic or molecular scale then there is the theory of nanostructures subtrack in which theoretical research into the physical and chemical principles of nano-structured materials and complex molecular structures is the central element finally there is the option of specializing in bio-nanostructures working on integrated sensors that can detect biological molecules and their interactions on a nanometer scale by the strong contacts that the applied physics department maintains with high-tech companies in the eindhoven region as well as in the rest of the netherlands and beyond a large part of this special master s track consists of elective courses and internships this means that graduates from tu/e gain a great deal of practical experience during their programs which is a valuable asset in finding their first jobs the extensive freedom of choice means you can to a large extent define the content of your study program to match your own preferences the interdisciplinary character of nanotechnology is expressed by the partnerships between different departments and universities as a specialist you learn to communicate with other disciplines and to be inspired by them graduated and then after completing the special master s track in nano-engineering you will possess the knowledge and skills to enable you to construct and manipulate bio materials on a nanometer scale there is a constant demand from industry and research institutes for graduates who can work at the boundaries between physics chemistry and biology graduates can find employment in research and development laboratories in industry for example at philips asml dsm and océ or at research institutes such as tno you could also take up a position that makes use of your organizational and leadership qualities why study nano-engineering in eindhoven an important characteristic of the special master s track in nano-engineering in eindhoven is the fact that the track is strongly focused on building bridges between fundamental science and technological applications this is made possible
