medical engineering tu/e a good choice high quality of education and research leading position in international university rankings excellent student facilities international contacts with leading universities eindhoven is a modern student city region of eindhoven technology hotspot in the netherlands jorien migchielsen after completing my bachelor in biomedical engineering i started on a medical engineering program my work placement in canada involved research on the treatment of lung cancer if you can predict where in the lungs the cancer will recur or was not completely removed after treatment then you can target your radiation that more accurately and boost your chances of success i am now doing a work placement at the catharina hospital where i am concentrating on cancer of the bladder however because the bladder moves it is tricky to target radiation of the bladder and the tumor in it this means that the treatment is not always effective and sometimes has unnecessary side effects a high level of accuracy can be attained by scanning the patient every day while he or she is lying on the `radiation machine to identify exactly the location of the bladder we can also use a catheter in the urinal tract to inject a contrast agent around the tumor thereby giving us better visibility of it we then don t have to damage the entire bladder with radiation and this prevents incontinence travel between eindhoven and the university hospital in maastricht made it tough in my first year but patient contacts were really gratifying you see the results of your work work that is really useful is a big motivational factor i also see my future working in a hospital once i graduate i would like to become a clinical physicist in training specialists having your own specific tasks and responsibilities clinical modules the clinical modules play an important role in the program and these clinical modules take place in maastricht university hospital these allow you to become familiar with the medical and technological aspects of the various clinical disciplines such as radiology clinical chemistry surgery and cardiology and the role that the medical engineer can play in them a clinical module integrates lectures practical work demonstrations and projects through which you come into contact with medical specialists and become familiar with everyday work in the clinic for example you will be present during operations and current medical research you will take two of the following four clinical modules coronary and vascular diseases oncology orthopedics or neurology internship opportunities at the end of the first year you will follow an external internship this internship allows you to deepen your knowledge of the clinical disciplines with which you have become familiar during the clinical modules in the first year you will carry out research in this area over a period of three months while requirements for admission working in a research group at a hospital either there are a number of general requirements for in the netherlands or abroad this will give you a admission to master s degree programs and special good impression of the current research projects master s tracks the internship will enable you to gain research · you must have a relevant bachelor s degree experience and to develop the professional or equivalent based on a program of sufficient approach that you will need for your graduation academic level and quality to enable you to project this graduation project takes up the whole complete the tu/e master s degree program or second year of the master s program and will take special master s track to which you wish to be place in a clinical setting admitted research profile of the department medical research diagnostics treatment and patient care are no longer conceivable without technology just think of the development of new imaging technologies that allow pathological processes to be detected at an early stage right down to the molecular level technology is just as essential for the culture of autologous bio-artificial tissues and organs as for the use of advanced computer models in diagnostics and intervention planning research within the biomedical engineering department has three focal areas of excellence the first is biomechanics tissue engineering which applies basic principles of mechanics and biology to biomedical problems and equipment biomedical imaging modeling applies methods from mathematics computer science physics electrical engineering and medicine for the imaging modeling and interpretation of biological systems molecular bioengineering molecular imaging approach issues at the molecular level using knowledge of e.g organic chemistry biochemistry and chemical polymers as well as technological research the department also actively applies these technologies in university hospitals where high-level technological research is carried out · you must be able to demonstrate sufficient command of the language in which the program or track is taught all tu/e master s degree programs and special master s tracks are taught in english · to prove sufficient command of the english language you should submit an academic ielts or toefl test for the scores or exemptions you can contact the international relations office io@tue.nl or visit www.tue.nl/masterprograms · a large part of the program of medical engineering is thaught in dutch since the official language during the clinical modules is dutch so you must be able to demonstrate sufficient command of dutch · to prove sufficient command of the dutch language you should submit the nt2 ii test · there may be additional specific requirements for specific programs or tracks also depending on the nature of your prior education more information visit www.tue.nl/masterprograms graduated and then after graduation you will be able to find employment in a teaching hospital or another large regional hospital you will continue your professional development by carrying out clinical research and by working within specialized treatment teams you will be able to take a responsible position in the decision-making process in relation to the diagnosis and treatment of individual patients your options will also include further training to become a clinical physicist or clinical chemist after taking specific elective courses within the master s program these courses are given at tu/e by the school of medical physics and engineering eindhoven www.smpee.tue.nl another good choice could be a position in industry playing an intermediary role between medical specialists and product developers why study medical engineering in eindhoven the master s program in medical engineering has been established partly by medical specialists who are also involved in teaching this also benefits them because they are training their future team members the program therefore takes place at two locations the headquarters of the biomedical engineering department in eindhoven and the maastricht university hospital azm the program is carried out partly in the clinical environment so that you have contact with the medical specialists and patients right from the start the interaction with technology and clinical practice forms an important part of the medical engineering program for this reason the professors in the biomedical engineering department in eindhoven also hold part-time positions in hospitals or industry cooperation with other universities for this program tu/e works closely with maastricht university um and maastricht university hospital azm academisch ziekenhuis maastricht graduation options depending on your own interests you can choose from a range of tracks and major fields in many cases you will select the topics that best match your own preferences together with your graduation mentor for example you could specialize in radiology surgery radiotherapy or cardiology neurophysiology or audiology.
