industrial design tu/e a good choice high quality of education and research leading position in international university rankings excellent student facilities international contacts with leading universities eindhoven is a modern student city region of eindhoven technology hotspot in the netherlands remco magielse for a long time i had wanted to study computer science and then mechanical engineering i had already registered when a friend asked me to go along to the industrial design open day which i did in the evening i said to my parents `dad mum i m going to switch i found it a bit of a revelation plenty of projects to get stuck into and direct contact with the customer not simply lectures and exams and it was also a brand new educational program exciting now that i have graduated i m looking to do a doctorate i think it s great to research engineering applications design innovative products that are also user-friendly in the first year of my master s i even developed a game that got kids interested in engineering but not in a lazy way behind a computer screen two teams attackers and defenders battle for a virtual object a small computer device that each player has measures heart rate and distance to the other players if an opponent is close by you can hear the heartbeat of your opponent and so run away i got second prize for this idea in a competition organized by nokia i received my prize in finland i have also written a scientific article about this and presented the idea at a conference in boston this just goes to show how nice industrial design can be user master s students will develop their `feel and the real world skills for interaction design and design processes during the half-year in which you graduate you will furthermore you pay attention to the way a product normally spend a large part of your time with and is introduced in the global market in addition in a company or institute often located abroad students are able to carry out independent research such as philips b&o adidas océ microsoft sony and design work and to reflect on the results the ericsson máxima medical center and atr in japan industrial design department applies a unique which focuses on intelligent robots teaching model in which students in both the bachelor s and master s programs learn on a research profile of the department competency-centred basis the ability to directly research and teaching are very closely linked apply what you learn and to be able to integrate in industrial design industrial design has four knowledge skills and attitude are essential capacity groups the first is designed intelligence characteristics of the program students progress which focuses on embedded systems and is monitored by means of half-yearly assessments information and communication technology then the competency coach is essential during your in user centered engineering the emphasis is on learning process you learn from feedback from research into users system interaction designing coaches experts clients and fellow students and quality in interaction is the branch of research have to defend your competency development that primarily investigates the interaction design before an assessment committee using your and the process of designing it finally business showcase which includes earning evidence process design focuses on the business processes feedback and reflections the first semester of the underlying the development and introduction first master s year is focused on design the other of a new product and services in the global semester on design research you will do projects market the central focus of the industrial design which are clustered in several themes such as program is the relationship between the user wearable senses medical care playful interactions and the intelligent product or service within the and automobility next to these projects you will societal context careful attention is given to both choose a number of modules and/or a master class developments in technology and trends and during modules a visiting lecturer discusses the socio-cultural changes latest developments in a specific field leading to related assignments which you have to work on requirements for admission some examples of modules are vision on ambient there are a number of general requirements for intelligence situated design software modeling admission to master s degree programs and special and specification passion for design embodied master s tracks interaction and multi-user interactions the first · you must have a relevant bachelor s degree semester of the second year consists of modules a or equivalent based on a program of sufficient master class and you will prepare your final master academic level and quality to enable you to project which you will do in the last semester complete the tu/e master s degree program or special master s track to which you wish to be admitted · you must be able to demonstrate sufficient command of the language in which the program or track is taught all tu/e master s degree programs and special master s tracks are taught in english · to prove sufficient command of the english language you should submit an academic ielts or toefl test for the scores or exemptions you can contact the international relations office io@tue.nl or visit www.tue.nl/masterprograms · there may be additional specific requirements for specific programs or tracks also depending on the nature of your prior education more information visit www.tue.nl/masterprograms cooperation with other universities the industrial design department maintains intensive links with other international programs and especially with other universities and institutes that work on `ambient intelligence such as georgia tech in atlanta carnegie mellon university in pittsburgh rmit university in melbourne and the university of florence right from the start the department has also worked together with national university of singapore nus royal college of arts in london and politecnico di milano graduation options during or after your first master s year you choose between two directions design or design research you ll be working closely together with one of the capacity groups designed intelligence user centered engineering business process design and designing quality in interaction respectively graduated and then as a graduate of the master s degree program in industrial design you will have achieved an academic level that means you are familiar with a significant new technology domain that of `ambient intelligence this technology is expected to offer exciting future opportunities next to that as a master of science in industrial design you will have a proactive and multifaceted background in technology covering user research and design as well as technology itself as a true team player you will be able to respond optimally to issues arising from both industry and the community and society at large among the possible career areas are in-company design departments design bureaus your own design company or research departments when you choose the direction of design research there are possibilities to continue with a phd in our own department opportunities of course also include positions in other countries because of the strongly international orientation of the program our graduates are working at e.g philips design microsoft research cambridge and creative conversion factory.
