industrial and applied mathematics tu/e a good choice high quality of education and research leading position in international university rankings excellent student facilities international contacts with leading universities eindhoven is a modern student city region of eindhoven technology hotspot in the netherlands marly van geel astronauts launched into space are subjected to very high g forces that reduce the flow of blood to the brain and increase the blood flow to the arms and legs but we still know very little about exactly how the blood circulation alters as the result of g forces i am going to develop a model for this in my graduation project i have always been really interested in aerospace engineering from a young age so last year i took the bold step of approaching esa the european space agency via our department to find out if they might have a project for me and they did i am really enthusiastic about it it deals with exactly the complex problems that i like to solve using my mathematical knowledge not problems for which there are ready-made solutions but problems that you really have to get stuck in to and which can best be solved `through calculation by endless puzzling studying theory and discussing with others that is the challenge in mathematics and in my industrial and applied mathematics study if a good opportunity were to present itself then i would like to continue my research and gain a phd but i d also like to train to become a teacher with a preference for teaching higher education students that have made a conscious decision to study in an engineering field research profile of the department the mathematics subdepartment focuses mainly on discrete mathematics stochastics and optimization and scientific computing and applied analysis the art of mathematical modeling and the design of innovative software which are widely applied in the department are key enablers for technological and industrial progress requirements for admission there are a number of general requirements for admission to master s degree programs and special master s tracks · you must have a relevant bachelor s degree or equivalent based on a program of sufficient academic level and quality to enable you to complete the tu/e master s degree program or special master s track to which you wish to be admitted · you must be able to demonstrate sufficient command of the language in which the program or track is taught all tu/e master s degree programs and special master s tracks are taught in english · to prove sufficient command of the english graduate from the master s degree program in industrial and applied mathematics in one of the following three tracks · the computational science and engineering track focuses on the development of skills in the area of advanced and large-scale mathematical calculations which you can use to analyze and study complex physical and technical processes you describe natural and technical processes using mathematical models in which differential equations play a key role these enable you to gain insight into a process to improve its quality as well as to control it optimally · discrete phenomena are central in the discrete mathematics and applications track these discrete phenomena vary from crystallographic lattices to optimization of networks and ics from computer algebra to cryptographic systems · the statistics probability and operations research track focuses very directly on operational management and not primarily on mathematics with a physical character this specialization involves organizational issues and schedules you will investigate the modeling and analysis of phenomena in which stochastics plays an important role this mainly involves the study of mathematical models and methods for the analysis of stochastics and optimization problems and the design of corresponding algorithms your final project takes place in a company at a government agency or within the tu/e during the last nine months of the master s program graduated and then as a graduate of the master s program in industrial and applied mathematics you will have gained a thorough knowledge of mathematical modeling you will also have developed skills to tackle technological and industrial problems for example the analysis of large databases in communication and information technology and the improvement of weather forecasts or models as used in telecommunications and physics queuing theory or optimization there is a great demand for graduates of this master s program not only in the high-tech industry but also in other industrial fields and at semi governmental agencies you will be able to find employment as a researcher consultant or developer examples of potential employers are
