embedded systems tu/e a good choice high quality of education and research leading position in international university rankings excellent student facilities international contacts with leading universities eindhoven is a modern student city region of eindhoven technology hotspot in the netherlands stefan geuns embedded systems is more practical than many other studies that appeals to me it is a combination of computer science the software side and electrical engineering the hardware side i did my bachelor s in engineering computer science and now i m learning how you can actually use computer science in embedded systems this is a new and topical study because more and more devices need this combination of software and hardware everything has to be more economical faster and better quality that demands ongoing engineering development and refinement and we do our bit to help achieve this a nice example is the project i did last year together with a couple of fellow students we modified a jpeg decoder so that it could also function in an environment that has fewer resources than a pc this can help in the development of all kinds of devices able to receive or store pictures like mobile phones or televisions to be able to constantly improve the quality of those pictures ­ the size number of megapixels ­ we are more often making applications parallel it may sound really abstract and complicated but i find the deciphering and puzzling so fascinating just as when i was at school and took my computer science lesson home with me to work on things myself i m still at it the compulsory electrical engineering courses are platform-based design systems on silicon multiprocessors performance analysis of embedded systems embedded systems laboratory internship opportunities in the elective part of the program you can include an internship with a maximum of 15 ects research profile of the departments mathematics and computer science department the design of innovative software and the art of mathematical modeling are key enablers for technological and industrial progress this department s computer scientists have a strong focus on design and have an excellent reputation in this field the research is concentrated on four areas of expertise specification and verification information systems algorithms and visualization and software and systems engineering the emphasis in the research is on its application in embedded systems and business information systems electrical engineering department research is carried out in the electrical engineering department in the area of electrical engineering and information technology both hardware in the form of electronic circuits and tools and software in the form of system software and electrical applications are studied analysis of existing systems and design of new systems are both important in this work research concentrates on four areas information and communication systems electrical energy technology measurement and control systems telecommunications and electromagnetism requirements for admission there are a number of general requirements for admission to master s degree programs and special master s tracks · you must have a relevant bachelor s degree or equivalent based on a program of sufficient academic level and quality to enable you to complete the tu/e master s degree program or special master s track to which you wish to be admitted · you must be able to demonstrate sufficient command of the language in which the program or track is taught all tu/e master s degree programs and special master s tracks are taught in english · to prove sufficient command of the english language you should submit an academic ielts or toefl test for the scores or exemptions nature of your prior education more information visit www.tue.nl/masterprograms graduation options the final project which accounts for a quarter of the program is the crowning achievement of your education you can opt to carry out this project on an in-company basis but you can also make a contribution to the scientific research of the university you can choose from a wide variety of subjects and you can also choose whether you want to graduate under a professor in electrical engineering or computer science graduated and then the combination of a scientific attitude with the practical approach of an engineer forms an excellent basis for an interesting career the numerous fields in which embedded systems are applied ensure a wide range of career opportunities you can follow a career in research laboratories software houses and multinationals companies such as philips asml and océ have a great demand for engineers with this expertise and attitude most graduates start with positions as members of embedded system design teams but many of them rapidly grow into positions as team leaders and in time to management functions starting up your own company is also among the options.
