leading universities eindhoven is a modern student city region of eindhoven technology hotspot in the netherlands joos buijs after completing my hbo in computer science in breda i felt there was still something missing whether a scientific basis or depth i had a sense that i still needed to do a master s at a university so i went for business information systems it s exactly that combination of business and computer science that appeals to me see how computer science can help a company try to be the link between the computer scientists and the company ­ that is what attracts me i am now a student assistant at laquso the laboratory for quality software twelve hours a week my special area is process mining what is that we use a system to try to find out how the processes in a specific company run where are the hurdles what can be done better faster more effectively let me use an example to illustrate take a hospital where the treatments a patient receives are very carefully recorded say that the system reveals that a certain combination of treatments occurs one could use this information to have treatment rooms close together that is optimizing the process this kind of useful information can be accessed from the system it s a kind of `treasure hunt process mining is still relatively new i enjoy helping to improve the various tools although my ambitions do not lie so much in the research but in getting process mining used in organizations this way i can contribute to developments in this field management quality and functionality it-governance information retrieval web information systems advanced databases business process management systems and business process simulation besides the compulsory part you can choose one of the four streams we offer of the chosen stream you have to join three or four compulsory courses the four streams you can choose from are business process management healthcare ict services and logistics the remaining part in the program you can fill with many possible elective courses from computer science and business management the view of the customer or consumer the same applies to flexibility cost control and quality improvement of business processes state-ofthe-art technologies are indispensable the industrial engineering management specialists of the industrial engineering innovation sciences department have set themselves the target of maximizing the return of knowledge technology and innovation in a responsible way the research domains include business information systems quality and reliability production and maintenance management and human performance management internship opportunities in the elective part of the program you can include an internship with a maximum of 15 ects research profile of the departments mathematics and computer science department the design of innovative software and the art of mathematical modeling form the basis of technological and industrial progress the department s computer scientists focus especially on design and have an excellent reputation in this field research concentrates on the four expertise domains specification and verification information systems algorithms and visualization and software and systems engineering the emphasis in research is placed on its application in embedded systems and business information systems industrial engineering innovation sciences department globalization has led to strong increase in competition between companies continuous innovation in products processes and services is of vital importance in retaining added value in requirements for admission there are a number of general requirements for admission to master s degree programs and special master s tracks · you must have a relevant bachelor s degree or equivalent based on a program of sufficient academic level and quality to enable you to complete the tu/e master s degree program or special master s track to which you wish to be admitted · you must be able to demonstrate sufficient command of the language in which the program or track is taught all tu/e master s degree programs and special master s tracks are taught in english · to prove track will be in one of these fields the final project which accounts for a quarter of the program is the crowning achievement of your education you can opt to carry out this project on an in-company basis but you can also make a contribution to the scientific research of one of the two departments the wide variety of subjects you can choose from is shown by the titles of some of the recent final portals and validating computerized systems graduated and then the combination of a scientific attitude with the practical approach of an engineer forms an excellent basis for an interesting career you are trained to design information systems based on a business perspective that means you will play an unquestioned key role in information-rich business processes such as manufacturing distribution or business services you will be able to find interesting and challenging work in large and medium-size organizations in the development of information systems and the design of automated business processes for example you might work as a developer architect or information manager most computer scientists start with positions as members of software design teams but many of them rapidly
