about marion m graham collegiate marion graham is a school whose students have achieved a reputation for excellence in academics arts athletics and adventure education ­ we have become the a team in each of the 25 years since the school opened mmgci students have risen to the challenge of contributing to this reputation of excellence scholarships displays of outstanding visual and performing arts strong athletic teams and cutting-edge outdoor education have become the hallmark of marion m graham collegiate alumni can look back on their years at marion m graham as being the foundation for their involvement in and service to their community they can also look back at a myriad of opportunities to learn and practise leadership and teamwork skills in addition to making life long friendships want a challenge want to have fun we are looking forward to having you join the a team course adaptations the use of the adaptive dimension in all curricula enables teachers at marion graham to help meet the various learning needs of students teachers may enrich or modify curriculum instruction evaluation and the learning environment to offer challenging yet appropriate program delivery creating enrichment and modification to subjects in a non-stream format allows students to experience and appreciate the contribution of all student perspectives the adaptive dimension in a nonstream format acknowledges students learn in different ways while creating an inclusive environment unique program features the functional living skills program at marion m graham collegiate promotes an integrated environment for students with special needs to learn and grow in a supportive school setting the goal of the program is to assist each student to develop to his/her greatest degree of independence and to prepare them for all areas of adult life this inclusive setting provides an opportunity for the entire student body to learn and practise citizenship attributes like tolerance acceptance and respect saskatoon public school offers a japanese exchange program marion m graham collegiate is twinned with taqa high school in hitachi japan every second year japanese students from hitachi visit marion graham for course offerings this book describes the wide variety of courses offered to students at mmgci students and parents/guardians should become familiar with saskatchewan ministry of education requirements when selecting their program of classes each year a balance of compulsory courses and electives allow students to meet requirements for grade 12 standing as well as to investigate a wide variety of interests 8

one week and attend with their home-stay partners as well as participating in many excursions while in saskatoon grade 11 and 12 students from our saskatoon public school will in turn visit hitachi every second year for more information about the japanese exchange programs please contact mrs verone charington/coordinator at 683-7765 marion graham also offers opportunities for a french exchange to tours france a saskatoon/quebec exchange and a three month long german exchange marion m graham is proud to be the home of a unique outdoor school program for grade 11 students this program is based on immersion experiences in the outdoors and will appeal to students who have interests and values based in adventure and the environment most of the activities are physically and emotionally demanding and students must be prepared for the challenge of an academically rigorous curriculum including biology geography wildlife management physical education and english language arts 20 students utilize local and regional locations such as the university meewasin park nisbet forest and provincial and national parks on a regular basis in addition students travel to different ecosystems of saskatchewan and complete week long extended canoeing cycling backpacking skiing winter camping and survival expeditions athletics inter-collegiate teams marion graham participates in league play city playoffs and provincial competitions in all inter-collegiate sports a combination of frosh junior and senior teams compete in the following sports badminton track field football cheer team wrestling soccer curling basketball volleyball golf cross-country pom squad intramurals nothing to do at lunch hour want to improve your physical fitness meet new friends and become part of the spirit of marion m graham then come and participate in the intramural program no degree of skill is necessary following is a list of typical activities aerobics ultimate frisbee team handball floor hockey volleyball weight training soccer badminton basketball dodgeball tennis cricket clubs and activities students are given many opportunities to work with other students and teachers outside the classroom students are encouraged to get involved in the following clubs debating club math contests inter-school christian fellowship peer tutoring katepwewisipiy outdoor club photography club light sound and video club 9

ethical living/career education 9 eth09 this compulsory class focuses on personal and career development physical mental character and social development of adolescents are important components of the course the first part of the course is designed to assist students in making personal commitments to responsible and ethical decisions assist students in accepting their responsibility for a healthy positive and productive lifestyle and to strengthen students abilities to meet their health-enhancing goals and action plans the career development section of the course is designed to investigate personal growth necessary for future careers to connect their learning with the community and to develop life and work plans based on the students preferred future mathematics 9 mth09-x mth09-z mathematics 9 is divided into three parts each part takes a half semester to complete topics in part one include number sense integers rational numbers and percent topics in part two include equations problem solving data management and probability topics in part three include polynomials scientific notation factoring geometry and measurement essential math 9 ­ mte09 this first semester course is intended for students who experience difficulty in mathematics students meet everyday for a period in semester 1 to review concepts from earlier grades and to cover the first third of the regular math 9 course the focus is on mastery of operations with integers and fractions students who take math 9 essentials take the regular math 9 course during second semester which covers the last two thirds of the math 9 curriculum a modified math class will be available for students in semester 2 this will be based on teacher referral following the final assessment in mte09 physical education 9 pem09/pef09 grade 9 physical education is a non-semestered class that will focus on the sports and activities offered by sports teams and intramurals at mgci a great emphasis will be placed on improving personal fitness to help students improve fitness they will be required to take part in activities both in and outside of class time grade 9 physical education will be evaluated using a pass/fail system science 9 ­ sci09 this course will introduce the students to concepts about saskatchewan s environment basic chemistry graphical analysis density the kinetic molecular theory electricity and the risks and limits associated with human lifestyles in addition one of the optional units on atmosphere weather and climate or the diversity of life may be studied social studies 9 ­ soc09 the grade 9 course is a program that studies the relationship between the past and present the course is presented in a way that accommodates different learning styles it covers history from the beginning of mankind prehistory to the present day students will consider how world views are shaped and how they are expressed living in particular times and places through traditional assignments lecture research and non-traditional class trips guest speakers current events teaching strategies the students will develop the skills needed to adapt to and understand the world around them 13
