gender rights and health a distance learning course 8 november 2010 14 january 2011 health programmes and health policies are often developed without taking into consideration the gender dimensions and rights perspective into consideration global health policies and programmes influence local level programmes and without a gender and rights perspective may even worsen the situation of local communities this course equips participants with concepts tools and analytical frameworks to analyse health programmes policies and research from a gender and rights perspective participants will gain insight knowledge and understanding of how health issues affect men and women differently as well as how their rights can be respected and realised the governance of health will be discussed and participants will write a research based health policy or a research proposal from a gender and rights perspective course content the following subjects are reviewed during the course gender concepts gender analysis including social relations of gender institutional production and reproduction of gender gender analysis tools gender and health analysis frameworks and how to apply a gender analysis to health gender rights and health including health equity gender equity and gender equality human rights and women s rights right to health and health care gender health and global policies including global milestones in development of gender discourse un conferences and initiatives who world bank international agencies and gender mdgs gender analysis of health problems and diseases including communicable diseases e.g tb hiv/aids urban health maternal health coronary vascular diseases neglected issues including sexual rights and health gender based violence health governance and gender including health systems including human resources decentralization accountability quality assurance public private provision and regulation objectives at the end of the module the participants should be able to describe gender concepts tools and gender analysis apply `gender and health analysis frameworks to analyze health programmes health policies and health research critically analyse the development of global health policies and programmes from a gender equity and rights perspective analyse health problems and diseases from a gender and rights perspective appraise the current state of health governance at national and local level from a gender equity perspective design a research based health policy or a research proposal from a gender and rights perspective about kit the royal tropical institute kit is an independent centre of knowledge and expertise in the areas of international and intercultural cooperation the aims of kit are to contribute to sustainable development poverty alleviation and cultural preservation and exchange within the netherlands it seeks to promote interest in and support for these issues kit has organized courses and training workshops on gender and development for over 20 years kit s gender courses and training workshops are geared towards development practitioners working at different institutional levels ranging from women s activist organizations ngos and research institutions to national governments and un agencies the courses are often developed in collaboration with partner organizations in the south mauritskade 63 1092 ad amsterdam p.o box 95001 1090 ha amsterdam the netherlands phone +31 020 568 8711 fax +31 020 568 8444 www.kit.nl
