master s programme in molecular life science msc faculty of science international master s programme the secret of health dna rna and protein are the secret codes of the human body decipher the codes and you will get an insight into body processes in nijmegen we offer a multidisciplinary master s programme in molecular life sciences working at the interface of chemistry biology and medical sciences you will not only explore the basic principles of molecules and cells but also their role in health and disease this combination of scientific topics translated into medical implications is unique in the netherlands four variants like all master s programmes at the faculty of science the master s programme in molecular life sciences is offered in four variants · business and management prepares students for a mana gement position as an academic professional it prepares students for a career in science related to business and administration and for innovation and enterprise from an academic perspective · communication trains students in science communication internal communication or communication towards society · education prepares students for a career in teaching · research trains students for fundamental and applied research this variant is required for people pursuing a phd position or a position in industrial or institutional research at this moment only the research variant has a complete programme in english the other variants primarily prepare for the dutch job market and the dutch educational system and are therefore taught in dutch top scientists the master s programme is closely associated with two inter nationally renowned research institutes the institute of molecules and materials imm and the nijmegen centre for molecular life sciences ncmls as a student you will enter a dynamic and challenging research environment work with top scientists learn about the latest developments in your field and conduct research at stateoftheart laboratories the neighbouring university medical centre allows a contin uous exchange between lab and clinic freedom of choice as a student you will have considerable freedom to follow your own interests two internships are central to the programme you will choose a specialization and join a related research group for example anthropogenetics molecular biology pharmacology neurobiology organic chemistry or bio informatics you will have your personal tutor who will help you decide which subjects and research to follow your second internship will be with a different research group you can also choose to follow an internship abroad or within a company in making your choice you will be able to benefit from the extensive international networks of our scientists.

programme the twoyear master research programme total of 120 ec includes two 45ec research internships for the master s course total of 15 ec a selection should be made from electives including a 3ec course in philosophy the first year consists of an experimental internship of 45 ec and master s courses in molecular life sciences with a total of 15 ec during the second year you will follow a second research internship 45 ec combined with a 15 ec elective program research internships can be carried out in a large variety of departments at the university internships performed at other universities in the netherlands or abroad require the supervision by a lecturer from one of the radboud university groups listed in the study guide and who will take the scientific responsibility for such an internship each 45ec research internship consists of · experimentalresearchincludingawrittenmasterthesis 36 ec · literaturethesis6ec · theoreticalcomponent3ec the 15ec elective programme consists of 6ec freely chosen courses at a university level and at least 9 ec covered with courses in natural sciences students who wish to specialize in bioinformatics can follow the bioinformatics track in their programme and will receive a certificate for this master s track together with their msc degree in molecular life sciences admission requirements required is the equivalent of a dutch bachelor s degree in molecular life sciences this degree must have an adequate multidisciplinary basis in especially chemistry and biology and some physics and mathematics as evaluated by the examination board students have to be fluent in both written and spoken english nonnative speakers of english require a toefl score of at least 550 or ielts 6.0 each year admission to the programme takes place in september for students from outside eea countries registration closes on 1 march for students from within the eea closure is on 1 may career prospects most of our graduates continue their career with a phd project in nijmegen at another dutch university or abroad each year our research institutes have a number of phd vacancies some of our graduates find a job as a researcher or manager in the pharmaceutical industry in the private commercial sector or in research institutes.

we study the role of heparan sulphate in glomerular inflammation angelique explains every kidney is made up of about a million glomeruli filtration units that selectively remove waste products heparan sulphate is a very complex sugar and we try to unravel the structurefunction relationship a project financed by the kidney foundation some researchers study the role of heparin sulphate in inflammation but we are the only ones who look at its effects in the kidney iris i first look at the in vitro situation in a cell culture and then mimic this process in an in vivo situation in mice i use one of the highly sophisticated immunofluorescent microscopes available here my main objective is to work on finding a therapeutic intervention strategy for this kidney disease in patients angelique adds we expect to publish the results in a scientific journal next year with iris as the coauthor of course iris eversen was doing her bachelor s programme in molecular life sciences when a miniinternship in applied biology sparked her interest in research so when i went on to do my master s degree i chose the research track she says iris now works in the nephrology department of the university medical centre umcn her course is one day a week the rest of her time is spent in the research laboratory working with postdoc angelique meulemansrops angelique after graduating from biomedical sciences where i did an internship in biochemistry and tumor immunology i realised that my main interest lay in diseases and their mechanisms therefore i chose pathobiology as my main subject and i proceeded to do my phd in nephrology the study of kidney disease after my doctorate i was able to stay in nijmegen as a postdoc iris has been great to work with she s very knowledge able accurate and independent she s done a lot of helpful work also in thinking about the progress of our research iris eversen master s student in molecular life sciences angelique meulemans-rops post-doc at the nephrology research laboratory after her internship iris will spend three months in the usa continuing the in vivo part of her research at the university of san diego this internship will be at a firm that produces veterinary medication where she will work on vaccines the type of research they do is very different though i will probably be learning many new techniques it s great to be able to put everything i ve been studying into practice i am curious to see what it s like to work in an international company but before i make any longterm commitments i want to follow the educational track of the master s degree programme which will enable me to teach in schools i love research but i m keeping my options open
