after completing a bachelor s programme in biology joann chose to pursue a research master s degree in medical biology in nijmegen the research training is more general while elsewhere people are immediately expected to specialize i preferred to keep a wider scope the research track in medical biology that i follow has a large internship component in both years it s up to the students to determine how many days they spend on research and how many they spend on lectures i did all my courses in the first year which gave me the freedom to spend five days a week concentrating on my research in the second year it really gives me a taste of what it s like to be a researcher joann works closely with inèz meijer a phd student in cell biology who chose to do a masters s degree in nijmegen after her bachelor s degree at hogeschool brabant because her ambition was to do a phd in medical biology inèz stresses that the most brilliant students do not necessarily make the best researchers more importantly people need to have a feel for this kind of practical work in her phd study inèz looks at the mechanism of protein degradation whereby proteins are absorbed into the cells so they can be degraded understanding the normal mechanisms will improve our understanding of what happens when something goes wrong and cancerous growth occurs joann contributes to inèz s research by studying the way in which two proteins bind joann the facilities here are great the building is new fresh and clean and we have firstclass equipment at our disposal in this department alone we have six `flow cabinets that we use for our cell growth experiments the two enjoy working together we have our own corner in the laboratory and we have a lot of fun during the experiments joann says i prefer this work to going to lectures a professor can explain a certain technique but only when you put it into practice do you really understand how it works both joann and inèz have firsthand experience with working in industry so they can appreciate the difference i enjoy the freedom i have here not having to ask for permission for every single experiment says inèz after i get my phd i will consider working for a company though because of the career opportunities joann i would just love to stay in this department and do my phd here joann kerperien master s student in medical biology inèz meijer phd student in cell biology admission requirements · theequivalentofadutchbachelor sdegreeinarelevant biological subject if there are gaps in your knowledge you will be able to follow an additional programme you may take a maximum of six months for this and your success willbeevaluatedbytheexaminationboard · fluencyinbothwrittenandspokenenglish.atoefl scoreofatleast550orielts6.0fornon-nativespeakers ofenglish admission to the programme takes place once a year in september.registrationforstudentsfromoutsideeea countriescloseson1marchandforthosefromwithinthe eeaon1may more information faculty of science international office e.io@science.ru.nl i www.internationalmasters.eu www.internationalmasters.eu publication date september 2010
