master s programme in mathematics msc faculty of science international master s programme the department the mathematics department currently has 14 research/teaching members of staff and a fluctuating population of about 10 phd students and postdocs furthermore student enrolment is about 45 in the first year with a total student population of around 150 this relatively small size has considerable advantages you will not feel anonymous and it makes it easy to interact with staff and fellow students we take a highly personal approach the combination of local courses and lectures offered by the national dutch master s programme in mathematics guarantees a broad and high-level range of topics to choose from research topics our master s programme is closely related to the research carried out in the institute for mathematics astrophysics and particle physics imapp nijmegen mathematicians have established many types of different relationships with other disciplines and research institutes as is often the case with many research departments the true research topics are linked to individuals therefore we invite you to look at our website for more information www.math.ru.nl you can choose from the following specializations · algebra and logic we specialize in algebraic logic including lattice-ordered algebras and topological dualities computer algebra including computational number theory and computational crystallography affine algebraic geometry and intuitionistic/constructive mathematics a dutch specialty since the days of l.e.j brouwer in connection with this we offer an exciting interdisciplinary track in the mathematical foundations of computer science in collaboration with the institute for computing and information science icis for more information see www.cs.ru.nl herman/onderwijs theorymaster · mathematical physics we focus on the mathematical aspects of quantum field theory and related areas of pure mathematics including operator algebras and noncommutative geometry which are important also in relation to the standard model of high-energy physics representation theory of ordinary and quantum groups special functions symplectic geometry integrable systems and topos theory · stochastics our general research line is stochastics applied to the natural sciences physics classical and quantum biology and neurosience research themes are in the areas of equilibrium and non-equilibrium statistical physics particle systems population biology quantum probability and quantum computing in collaboration with the donders institute for brain cognition and behaviour applications to neuroscience are created.

personal tutor for a tailor-made programme our master s programme offers you considerable freedom to follow your own interests under the guidance of a personal tutor at the beginning of the two-year programme you will choose your specialization within which you can select a research group you will be allocated a personal tutor with whom you will decide the research area on which you wish to focus and the most appropriate specializations and subjects in short you will develop a tailor-made programme based on your own interests dutch mastermath the departments of mathematics of all the dutch universities have co-ordinated their efforts to enhance their master s programmes in mathematics each year they work together to develop a collective programme of special courses selected from different training programmes this enables students to profit from the best that each dutch course in mathematics has to offer more information www.mastermath.nl the programme this master s programme takes two years and is structured as follows · courses80ec · master sthesis40ec a minimum of 30 ec of courses have to be selected from the national dutch master s programme in mathematics a minimum of 3 ec in philosophy have to be taken once you ve graduated you ll be awarded a master of science degree career prospects our graduates are analysts and problem solvers who make contributions in many fields most graduates find employment immediately after graduating in a very wide range of jobs including business academia government and ict admission requirements · theequivalentofadutchbachelor sdegreeinmathematics as evaluated by our examining board · aninterviewtoidentifyanydeficienciesrelatedtothe chosen field deficiencies can be made up during the master s programme to a maximum of 30 ec · fluencyinbothwrittenandspokenenglish.non-native speakers of english require a toefl score of at least 550 or ielts 6.0 more information e maths@math.ru.nl i www.ru.nl/master i www.math.ru.nl

although complex computations are often carried out with the help of computers tim enjoys the low-tech nature characteristic of a great deal of mathematical problem-solving the elegance of mathematics is that you re working on solving a complex problem without any aids i work with paper and pencil and don t need anything else the beauty is also that once a statement has been proven there is no discussion anymore about whether or not it s true tim appreciates the small scale of the mathematics master s programme in nijmegen and the accessibility of the professors there i regularly meet with my supervisor to make sure i am still on the right track but other than that i work on my own it s kind of cool to do your own after obtaining bachelor s degrees in both physics and mathematics tim chose to continue in the field of mathematics initially my main focus was on physics but over time it shifted more and more to mathematics as it turns out my real fascination is both in pure mathematics and in understanding physics in a mathematical sense so for my master s degree i chose to study mathematical physics tim now in the second year of his master s programme has started working on his thesis i am looking at a new method for geometric quantization of the kepler problem kepler a german astronomer who lived around 1600 described the orbits of planets the quantized version of this problem describes the spectrum of the hydrogen atom we want to calculate this spectrum by means of analysis and geometry tim de laat master s student in mathematics i still need to finish a few courses he says but i have discovered that my real passion lies with research some of my fellow students do not share this preference and want to apply their knowledge in other areas but i hope to be able to keep doing mathematical research as a phd student it s probably the best way to stay involved in research and keep learning new fascinating mathematics research i also like the national master s programme that nijmegen is part of a programme that is open to students from all dutch universities the courses are taught by national experts from different areas of mathematics
