master s programme in computing science msc faculty of science international master s programme finding solutions computer systems now touch on virtually all aspects of society and personal life in what is commonly referred to as `ambient computing ensuring the security reliability and quality of these systems is a growing problem the master s programme in computing science will train you to become a specialist who is able to find solutions to these problems you will receive a thorough theoretical training and will learn to think creatively so that you can contribute to developing future techniques experts in computing science this programme where you will be trained by top researchers is closely related to the work done at the institute for computing and information science icis the highest ranked computer science department in the netherlands research at icis focuses on three themes model-based system development digital security and intelligent systems nijmegen research in these areas is internationally leading icis researchers recently revealed fundamental vulnerabilities in the mifare classic chip which is used by millions for instance in the london oyster card and the dutch ov chip card other examples of research include the safety of software for airbags the reliability of software in modern television sets the use of artificial intelligence for brain-computer interfaces and the use of theorem provers to check theorems from mathematics these are all areas where you too can become involved you will study in a modern building with excellent facilities a challenging education our master s programme has been praised by external experts who assessed it as diverse and challenging students for example run their own software company giphouse here they practise their future professions as managers and ict specialists for those who prefer to become proficient in research there is the research lab international experience is obtained by an international research project organized as a study tour the programme is characterized by a personal approach and individual supervision many choices possible nijmegen s computing science specialists cooperate closely with colleagues from other disciplines and from other universities this allows us to offer students a wide spectrum of choice cooperation with our donders institute for example makes it possible to specialize in artificial intelligence and neural networks the master s track in mathematical foundations of computing science involves close cooperation with mathematicians and at the kerckhoffs institute a cooperative venture with the universities of eindhoven and enschede students can choose the master s track in computer security.

before there is so much freedom here everything is small-scale and it is easy to interact with the professors most of the courses are not standard and some of the professors even change the direction of their course halfway through if they notice the students interest is moving in a different direction frank they encourage us to get off the beaten track both in the courses and in research in fact you can go as far as you want to go for their master s research frank and willem started with a common subject the static structure of the internet with research you never know where it will lead you says frank i ended up focusing on website communities and the way in which you can see that sites belong together on the basis of their structure i analyze these clusters and frank and willem are friends who studied computer science at the avansuniversityin`s-hertogenboschbeforecomingtonijmegen becausetheydidnottakethebachelor sprogrammeatuniversity level they needed to complete a six-month transitional programme before starting the two-year master s course in computing science frank i was not entirely sure whether i wanted to continue studying i usually prefer doing practical work but my curiosity got the better of me i registered at university and gave myself six months to see if thiswastherightthingforme.afterthissix-monthperiodidecided to stay and over time i started to feel more and more at home at the university so much so that i am now considering the option of pursuing another degree after finishing my current master s programme probably in information science computing science is so creative it keeps evolving willem had already completed two internships during his four years of study but he felt that he was not ready to start working full-time yet the master s programme is great it is so different from what we did willem elbers and frank koopmans master s students in computing science willem took a different path and looked at optimizing webpage interest when people position their webpage on the internet they want to know in which location it will arouse the most interest i devised a way of ranking this interest so people can optimize their location and get an optimum of traffic to their website initially i did not think my researchwoulddrawmuchattention.butwhenisubmittedanarticle based on my master s thesis to the international conference on the theory of information retrieval organized by microsoft research and cambridge university it was accepted microsoft and co-sponsor yahoo are very interested in this work it is rewarding when your own ideas catch on and you even receive serious interest from renowned institutions like that monitor them in order to see how they evolve this could be of interest to advertisers who want to find out more about the customers they target
