in an effort to support a positive change in student behavior and increase student achievement at gilmer high school the administration examined the feasibility of revamping and restructuring the conventional in school suspension program to address the repetitiveness and the lack of deterrence efforts are focused on the removal of disruptive students from the educational mainstream and administer an intervention that would offer these students the opportunity to access support programs to help facilitate their reintegration into the mainstream without having to utilize out of school suspension oss except in the most severe instances the underlying goal of rise is to strengthen the foundation for sound thinking in our students lives and assist them in recognizing that wherever they go and whatever they do the quality of thought behind their choices will determine the quality of their lives the focal point of the gilmer high school rise philosophy is a revised version of the traditional iss program in addition to assigning students consequences based only on time to serve alone an administrator assigns the student a number of points to be earned as well prior to the student being permitted to return to the educational mainstream teachers will write referrals as needed and direct them to the attention of the appropriate administrator in cases where class disruptions negatively impact the learning environment and threaten the safety or well being of others students will immediately be removed and taken to the administrator or behavior specialist and subsequently assigned the appropriate intervention and/or consequence once in the rise program individual student progress will be monitored by a team of faculty and facilitators whose responsibility it will be to track student attendance and participation any student assigned to rise will report to the program immediately after the administrative conference students will not be automatically suspended for non-participation in the rise program but will be afforded an opportunity to rethink his/her decisions and work through conflicts while still assigned to rise oss will however continue to be an option for those who persist in creating disruptions of a prolonged or violent nature or who refuse to conform to the rules of rise components of the rise plan include but not limited to 1 students having to write letters identifying his/her inappropriate behavior or malfunction and apologizing for disrupting the educational process 2 students having to serve the teacher assigned lunch detention in addition to his/her participation in the rise program 3 students completing the prescribed rise assignment package students will have a maximum of six days to perform the designated tasks and earn the points needed to return to the mainstream as a result the student has the opportunity to determine the length of time he/she will remain in the rise program this will allow a conscientious student who committed a relatively minor infraction the opportunity to work quickly and return to his/her classes in a short period of time if the tasks are not completed in the six day time frame the student will be issued 3 days oss if a referral contains several incidents of misconduct each offense shall be weighted and the student will earn a cumulative assessment of points the ultimate idea of rise is to increase standards of education by enhancing the atmosphere in which we teach and learn the rise program has been created with the best interest of everyone at gilmer high school in mind and is based on guidelines from the code of student conduct the ghs discipline plan and school board policies through implementation of this program coupled with strong faculty support there is a sound basis for measurable improvement of student conduct and achievement.
