units introduction to health professions education the first unit delineates the major issues in health professions education that are covered by the mhpe programme and introduces the students to the principles and theories of learning and how these are related to problem-based learning basic methodology and statistics are also included in this unit assessment and evaluation modern developments in knowledge and skills assessment as well as their effects on learning will be addressed in this unit students will study the construction application interpretation and analysis of tests quality criteria will be discussed and a simple test will be developed the concept of `quality will be further explored and the difference between internal and external quality control will be addressed basic statistical measurements that are frequently used in establishing test quality are another topic of this unit international character of the programme i enrolled in the master of health professions education mhpe programme in maastricht in 1992 as pioneer student and clinician with an interest in medical education i was particularly curious about what the programme could offer me as a clinical teacher currently as assistant professor in medical education deputy director of the paediatric residency programme and coordinator of the paediatric clerkship programme in my department this curiosity has transformed into the conviction that a degree in health professions education is valuable for clinical teachers i am certain that the mhpe programme contributed to the preparation i needed to handle these as well as my other present professional teaching roles the first thing that struck me when i enrolled in the programme 17 years ago was the concept of distance-based learning and the opportunity to tailor the programme to the participants working environment the international character of the programme which involved participants from all over the jamiu o busari the netherlands mhpe graduate 1994 phd graduate 2004 overall the quality of the mhpe programme addressed my desires as a healthcare professional and as a teacher it is an excellent programme for broadening existing teaching skills and developing new ones while providing a solid foundation for developing new strategies in healthcare education and research world from different educational contexts and with different professional backgrounds provided a rich source of practical contexts to learn from the problem-based learning method that was used in the programme a unique trademark of maastricht university was completely different from the conventional methods of learning i was used to then apart from being stimulating this method of learning facilitated my active participation in the educational process learning and cognition students deepen their understanding of modern principles and concepts of knowledge and learning knowledge constructivism self-directed learning contextual learning collaborative learning learning styles transfer memory problem solving development of expertise and metacognition are the keywords for this unit organisation and management this unit addresses different organisational structures and cultures the concept of educational management and budgeting knowledge management and human resource management furthermore issues of organisational change and change management as well as the implementation of educational innovations are central to this unit curriculum and instruction students acquire insight into the design development implementation evaluation and revision of educational programmes the principles of curriculum design and block construction are addressed advantages and disadvantages of various educational formats are addressed skills training lectures problem-based learning project learning and e-learning the role of cultural differences in curriculum design and community-based education are also part of this unit basics of research in education methods and techniques this unit covers the empirical cycle and various types of research methods and techniques qualitative and quantitative research use and design of questionnaires and or interviews and the associated advantages and disadvantages will be explained students will learn how to formulate a research question advanced research in education methods and techniques in this unit students will deepen their understanding of the topics of the previous unit the unit is a requirement for students who want to conduct a research project for their master s thesis master s thesis students research or design projects culminate in the master s thesis it is strongly recommended that students present their thesis in the form of a research paper if the student the supervisor and the co-authors if any think the quality of the paper warrants submission to an international peer-reviewed scientific journal the paper qualifies as a master s thesis applying the knowledge in my day-to-day work between the time i started medical school and the time i completed my residency i developed the knowledge skills and attitudes required of a physician along the way i became interested in not only what i was learning but the process of medical education i wanted to learn key concepts in medical education and how best to apply them to the training of students and residents in my institution the mhpe programme at maastricht university was an obvious choice the experience of distance-based learning appealed to me right from the start because i continue to do clinical work while completing the distance-based mhpe coursework i am not learning abstract concepts i can immediately and concretely apply what i learn in the programme to my day-to-day work although at times having clinical and teaching responsibilities while completing the mhpe programme can seem like a challenge i benefit enormously from the support of my colleagues the mhpe programme encourages us to work together sharing ideas knowledge and resources by collaborating with my fellow students i have learned more than the basics of health professions education i quickly learned that my colleagues and i have a lot in common despite living on different continents and having different job descriptions we all want to foster excellence in health professions education and excellence in patient care we all meet challenges inherent to working in healthcare and educational systems most importantly we all hope that by improving health professions education in our institutions we will not only improve the experience for students but also for patients beth cummings canada mhpe student 2006 advanced assessment and evaluation in this unit principles of learning and instruction are integrated with modern authentic assessment methods total quality management and accreditation are addressed and students will design and evaluate an assessment programme motivating their choices based on recent insights on assessment electives students are strongly advised to personalise their programme courses attended elsewhere may count as an acceptable alternative to one of the maastricht mhpe units the professional development of teachers students discuss developments in teacher competences and how these are related to modern insights into principles of adult
