maastricht university leading in learning historic yet forward-thinking and contemporary typically dutch yet multicultural and vibrant maastricht is a city of contrasts not only is maastricht the birthplace of the modern european union it also continues to establish itself internationally thanks to maastricht university s position as a leading academic centre in europe beyond boundaries welcome from the dean what makes studying at maastricht university s faculty of health medicine and life sciences fhml so special many answers are possible but the strong focus on the health continuum as a basis for our educational and research strategies plays a prominent role this continuum spanning from molecule to human to society is mirrored in the breadth of our faculty which covers everything from the prevention diagnosis and therapy of diseases to rehabilitation and societal aspects we feel strongly that we must understand what health is before we can develop genuine and farreaching knowledge of disease having such a broad scope within one faculty is unique in europe and stems from the fact that the fhml was founded in 2007 from a combination of separate faculties this merger was based on a unique vision bringing together the health and life sciences with the broad spectrum of experimental and clinical medicine to form a new powerful alliance the health sciences master s and research programmes offered at the fhml thus encompass the entire field of health sciences ranging from the biological to the behavioural and social sciences the faculty also incorporates a prominent school of public health with a much broader scope than more traditional public health schools which will be expanded even further in the near future 2 the true interdisciplinarity of our faculty and school will empower all students to integrate questions of fundamental science with applications of clinical medicine further they will be able to understand the complex needs of our society when it comes to the maintenance of health the prevention of disease its proper diagnosis and treatment and of course its social cultural and political implications our programmes will thus provide the most comprehensive spectrum of knowledge in the fields of health and life sciences as well as medicine i have every confidence that our education and research introduction faculty of health medicine and life sciences maastricht university founded in 1976 is the youngest university in the netherlands ever since its founding the university has held a unique position among dutch universities thanks to its problem-based learning pbl system the faculty of health medicine and life sciences fhml currently has some 4,000 students enrolled in its various educational activities the faculty is located in the randwyck university complex where modern buildings provide students with a pleasant atmosphere in which to study students at fhml have regular access to the latest facilities including a multimedia laboratory a library a computer resource centre and multiple information desks the learning and resource centre and the library house an extensive collection of books scientific journals and magazines computers and audiovisual equipment special teaching rooms equipped with modern recording and presentation equipment are available to students for use during skills training students are free to make use of the internet café which is conveniently located near the university library research master in nutrition and metabolism fundamental and clinical aspects problem-based learning maastricht university has adopted the problem-based learning pbl system as the leading educational approach in all curricula pbl is an educational format focusing on discussion and learning based on real-life problems which activates the student s prior knowledge and thus enhances a natural interest in the study topics students learn to recall information and to become self-directed initiators under the guidance of a tutor students are placed in small groups where they are encouraged to probe and scrutinise issues concepts and principles related to a specific real-life problem pbl motivates students to become more involved in their studies to be more independent and to deal with various situations by using skills learned in the pbl training students tackle problems that provoke scrutiny and are encouraged to retrieve information from diverse learning resources and actively participate in the group discussions in brief this two-year research master master of science in nutrition and metabolism fundamental and clinical aspects is the only research master s in the field of nutrition and metabolism in the netherlands the programme is unique in its focus on fundamental and clinical aspects of research the curriculum is in keeping with the highly successful socially relevant research topics affiliated to the nutrition and toxicology research institute maastricht nutrim the programme focuses on research and research skills which are integrated with the institute s most significant topics that generate intensive interaction between students and researchers close interaction with senior faculty s mentors will promote the individual development as a scientist graduates will be top candidates for a phd position within nutrim nutrim s distinct internationally recognised reputation in the field of nutrition and metabolism provides students with a unique background of information and skills vital for the execution of innovative and excellent research during the master s programme students will develop scientific skills through theoretical and practical research courses education is executed by top researchers with an established and internationally recognised research profile and proven teaching experience and commitment it will be possible but not obligatory to do a part of the research project at another international research institute nutrim has an extensive and active international research network exceptionally talented students who have completed a relevant regular one-year master s programme may be under stringent conditions directly admitted to the second year profile metabolic disturbances play an important role in the aetiology of various diseases clear examples are disturbances in energy glucose and lipid metabolism that may ultimately lead to obesity diabetes or cardiovascular diseases the number of people suffering from these diseases will exponentially increase during the next decades not the least due to the growing numbers of overweight and elderly subjects the aetiology of the metabolic abnormalities is poorly understood although it is clear that genetic and environmental factors are involved a major environmental factor is of course diet as a proper choice of foods may prevent or delay many of the health consequences related to metabolic abnormalities even despite a high body weight it is an important area of research for the general public policymakers and the food industry thus there is a strong need for highly qualified scientists in the field of nutrition and metabolism who can work within a multidisciplinary setting scientists who can initiate high-standard studies scientists who can translate and communicate their findings with their academic peers policymakers and the food industry objectives the research master in nutrition and metabolism fundamental and clinical aspects focuses on biomedical research and the diet-dependent regulation of metabolism under physiological and pathophysiological conditions the research will not only provide in-depth knowledge to understand the role of diet to prevent metabolism-related disorders but also to understand the importance of diet as modulator during the progression of these disorders and to explain the heterogeneity of metabolism-related disorders this fundamental and applied approach will educate students who will ultimately contribute to the formulation of dietary guidelines at the population level based on science from the molecular tissue/organ and whole body perspective and who will understand the role of diet during different clinical conditions such as pre and post-operative care acute disease conditions recovery and revalidation and palliative care 4 research master in nutrition and metabolism msc 2010 5
