but the strong focus on the health continuum as a basis for our educational and research strategies plays a prominent role this continuum spanning from molecule to human to society is mirrored in the breadth of our faculty which covers everything from the prevention diagnosis and therapy of diseases to rehabilitation and societal aspects we feel strongly that we must understand what health is before we can develop genuine and far-reaching knowledge of disease having such a broad scope within one faculty is unique in europe and stems from the fact that the fhml was founded in 2007 from a combination of separate faculties this merger was based on a unique vision bringing together the health and life sciences with the broad spectrum of experimental and clinical medicine to form a new powerful alliance the health sciences master s and research programmes offered at the fhml thus encompass the entire field of health sciences ranging from the biological to the behavioural and social sciences the faculty also incorporates a prominent school of public health with a much broader scope than more traditional public health schools which will be expanded even further in the near future the true interdisciplinarity of our faculty and school will empower all students to integrate questions of fundamental science with applications of clinical medicine further they will be able to phd these conclusions of my research thesis are i think a good example of the value added by merging the approaches from medicine and health sciences in fact i got my research data from the osteoporosis policlinic of the academic hospital maastricht and the research was done in close collaboration with rheumatologist prof piet geusens and traumatologist sven van helden from this same hospital before starting my one-year master s in epidemiology i had already studied health education and promotion and health care studies here in maastricht and in diepenbeek belgium in the meantime i have recently accepted a phd position at the department of epidemiology continuing my career as a professional scientist and researcher by writing my phd thesis in brief the master s programme in really and to what degree in fact as for now nobody really knows in order to investigate the above i developed a research project involving 466 patients distributed over two research groups one in the hague the other in utrecht and one control group the research was organised in cooperation with sananet the company that distributes the health-buddy not only will we measure the effects on self-efficacy but we will also investigate to what extend this empowerment is influenced by the type of questions the buddy asks the research is still ongoing so i have no answers yet but within the year we will know more the condition of patients with type-2 diabetes has to be monitored on a regular basis of course this can be done in the clinic but modern information technology also makes it perfectly possible for patients to reside at home and be monitored there this is what the health-buddy is for a small piece of equipment containing a display and input device which is connected to a education and promotion master s thesis psychosocial determinants and intention phases of movement behaviour supervisor prof n de vries phd quite a different approach compared to someone who is already moving and just should persevere during my internship i studied the complex relations between psychosocial determinants intentional phases and movement behaviour it provided me and active living the agency that issued the internship with better insights into individual behaviour and effective intervention techniques in fact after graduating i accepted a job as programme manager at this same agency here at the national sports centre in papendal we use scientific insights in order to promote the vitality of employeesand feedback our field experiences to research institutes like the department of health education and promotion at maastricht university this linking of theory and practice is of utmost importance and i am proud to contribute to it most people are aware of the importance of physical activity but this doesn t imply that all of them translate this awareness into practice they differ as much in their actual movement behaviour as in their willingness to change that behaviour so here are some questions why do some people move while others don t and why do some people succeed in changing their behaviour where others fail if we could understand their motivational determinants better it would surely help us to intervene at more effective rates somebody who currently isn t even contemplating a change in his behaviour requires 10 master s programmes msc in public health health policy economics and management director of studies a van raak phd department of health organisation policy and economics hope turning brain drain into brain gain anna majkowski msc public health specialisation health policy economics and for highly educated physicians in the west in london for instance salaries are offered that no polish healthcare institute can compete with so we cannot stop physicians from leaving poland now but we can increase the chance that in some ten or twenty years or so they might return in my research i took the jewish diaspora as an example even when not living in israel jews all over the world know that they will always be welcome `home we can do something similar by establishing strong bonds between our expats and their home country polish universities for instance could invite them on a regular basis to participate in conferences research programmes and development projects in time then brain drain could evolve into brain circulation and finally brain gain profile as europe s population ages health rapidly becomes a number one priority for citizens and governments alike the recognition that good quality healthcare is essential to a full life is widely shared and the increasing demand for and supply of healthcare have already elevated the care sector into one of the largest economic and employment sectors in the western world at present about ten cents of every euro spent in the netherlands is spent on one form of care or another and this amount is expected to rise even further in the years to come and the sector is not only large but also highly complex numerous parties cooperate with each other in order to successfully launch new services or create and implement new organisational frameworks highquality care top-notch service for patients and clients transparency efficiency legal and social responsibilities these are only a few of the catchphrases in the current healthcare trends the specialisation health policy economics and management analyses these trends and developments in order to resolve the associated management policy economic and health problems practical skills and knowledge are emphasised by the use of a multidisciplinary approach that includes among others health economics political science public administration health law health services research logistics and operations management organisational science financial management and accounting and health ethics throughout the specialisation students become acquainted with the international healthcare situation management master s thesis the evidence of `brain drain its causes and scope in context to polish health care supervisor prof h maarse phd in brief the master s programme in individual level e.g consumers patients physicians nurses students acquire the knowledge and skills to analyse problems in healthcare policymaking and management and to translate their findings into effective policy solutions like many countries in eastern europe poland suffers from a severe brain drain intellectuals leave the country as i have done to study and work in western europe or the us the drain is especially strong among qualified physicians a brain drain is always caused by the combined effects of push and pull factors even if some push factors like bureaucracy or poor living conditions could be changed polish policy has little influence on the growing demand student profile this specialisation in health policy economics and management aims at students with an academic interest in a continued international education programme who want to pursue a career in the healthcare sector career prospects unlimited opportunities await graduates of heath policy economics and management graduates are equipped to assume positions in government institutions independent administrative and advisory bodies care institutions and healthcare insurers the international focus of the fund to pay for the questionnaires and envelopes although work-home interferences did not pose a major problem for most of the 131 physiotherapists selected there still proved to be significant differences for one thing i was able to demonstrate that physiotherapists with more social support from colleagues experienced significantly more positive interference from work to home and as a consequence were more satisfied with their jobs and their lives and had fewer psychological complaints social support among colleagues improves the balance between work and home in brief the master s programme in public health specialisation work and health is a one-year programme that provides students with the essential scientific knowledge insight and skills needed to prevent health-related problems in organisations to promote reintegration into the workforce and to improve individual health and well-being at the workplace the programme is intended for students with an academic interest in work and health issues of which they must have prior basic knowledge being a physiotherapist myself i was interested in how physiotherapists combine work and home tasks mainly for two reasons the increased number of female physiotherapists and the fact that physiotherapists have to deal with high physical and emotional strains that exert influence on the situation at home or so i expected for no one had in fact studied this topic of work-home-interference as it is termed in the profile the workplace is a major determining factor of health and illness about 50 of the employees who are ill suffer from some kind of work-related illnesses like burnout rsi or lower back pain but work can also be a great source of satisfaction well-being and social integration whether work will turn out to be a threat or a benefit to one s well-being depends on a complex of physical psychological and social determinants companies as well as governments and employees all have a keen interest in measures that prevent the occurrence of work-related illnesses and therefore reduce the costs of absenteeism reintegration and social benefits for the objectives the specialisation in work and health provides student with the theories analytical tools competences and skills to analyse problems in the field of work and health in a systematic way using different scientific methods both quantitative and qualitative students learn to translate the results of this analysis into effective policies and measures at the organisational level aimed at prevention and reintegration and to develop methods to improve individual health and wellbeing at the workplace the course also broadens the student s perspective on work and health issues and supports reaching a more advanced academic level graduates are capable of working independently and as part of a team · management of personnel absenteeism and reintegration · quality of work and workplace · individual support in vocational rehabilitation · worksite health promotion · cooperation in occupational health care · organisational change and transformation the mandatory training factor analysis and analysis of multi-level data is also part of the programme although the msc public health work and health is a one-year full-time programme it is also possible to spread the programme over two years on a part-time basis for the latest msc in physical activity and health biology of human performance and health director of studies h savelberg phd department of human movement sciences movement patterns as insights gained from sports are often applicable to individuals with physical disabilities sports and sports applications are an integral aspect of this master s programme although the msc physical activity and health biology of human performance and health is a one-year fulltimeprogramme it is also possible to spread the programme over two years on a part-time basis for the latest information and the content of the units please visit www.maastrichtuniversity.nl/fhml/masters in brief the master s programme in physical activity and health specialisation biology of human performance and health covers all aspects of the relationship between physical activity and health in healthy individuals patients and elite sports athletes it interfaces between ageing chronic illness inactivity movement health and intervention initiatives based on physical exercise and nutrition the programme is intended for students with a keen academic interest in issues surrounding physical activity ageing health and sports objectives the biology of human performance and health programme aims at students with a special interest in the interaction between physical activity mobility and health students learn how to develop and conduct analyses of exercise programmes evaluate the physiological biomechanical psychological and neurological effects of interventions and create new intervention initiatives students strengthen their capacities and gain insight into how the relevant variables interrelate special programme features as the same biological principles that determine the effects of conditioning programmes in clinical settings are also effective in sport settings this specialisation is of particular interest to those students working on the interaction between training programmes exercise and nutritional and physical performance with regard to the general public as well as athletes clinical and athletic conditions create a platform for students to formulate a critical analysis of exercise programmes evaluate the effects of interventions and create interventions initiatives therefore come as no surprise that the need for specialists in this area is on the rise add to this the increasing demand for evidence-based paramedical treatment methods and it should be clear that biology of human performance and health specialists can look forward to excellent career opportunities graduates of the biology of human performance and health programme assume positions in higher education and research institutes medical companies e.g in research positions sports counselling agencies government agencies and advisory councils profile our evolutionary origins provided us with a body designed for daily physical activity for healthy individuals the ability to move comes so naturally that it is rarely given any thought only when movement gets problematic as a result of old age accident disease or lack of exercise does performance in movement activities become a subject for discussion therapy training and investigation there is an inextricable link between physical activity and health in the industrialised world individuals tend to adopt quite a sedentary lifestyle i.e hypokinesis which is associated with several chronic diseases like obesity cardiovascular disease type two diabetes osteoporosis and osteoarthritis whereas physical activity can improve the quality of life and slow the process of ageing hypokinesis leads to accelerated degeneration of physical and mental functions if uninterrupted a vicious cycle will occur hypokinesis has detrimental effects on health mobility the ability to care for oneself and ultimately the quality of life diminished health in turn affects an individual s capacity to move which again leads to hypokinesis etc movement whether the result of therapy training or a change in lifestyle proves to be a simple yet effective means of interrupting this cycle governments now recognise the importance of physical activity as a public health issue however although much is spent on health campaigns promoting movement stimulating individuals to change their sedentary lifestyles is quite a difficult task the specialisation biology of human performance and health covers all aspects of the relationship between physical activity and health in healthy individuals patients and elite sports athletes it interfaces between ageing chronic illness inactivity movement health and intervention initiatives based on nutrition and student profile the specialisation biology of human performance and health will prove invaluable to students with a keen academic interest in issues surrounding physical activity ageing health and sports this study is especially suitable for students who wish to understand how these issues and variables affect one another and how specific interventions are successful in easing the effects of ageing which interventions assist in the reduction or prevention of health problems and how to optimise elite sports performances career prospects although it is now widely recognised that physical activity is a major determinant of health much work still remains to be done in order to physically activate the general public in industrialised countries to achieve this goal more research is needed for instance into what kind of physical exercise proves most effective for particular problems and many more interventions have to be developed society lacks knowledge in this area that it badly needs it should links with research research in the master s programme in biology of human performance and health is carried out at the school for public health and primary care caphri the nutrition and toxicology research institute maastricht nutrim the institute of brain and behaviour and the cardiovascular research institute maastricht carim the educational themes are compatible with the research themes and scientific developments at these institutes research for a student s thesis will usually occur under the guidance of one of these institutes curriculum overview the programme encompasses 40 full-time weeks of training and consists of four theoretical units totalling 20 weeks plus an additional research and master s thesis period of another 20 weeks a unit takes several weeks of teaching and closes with an examination furthermore a unit deals with a specific theme problem or set of problems the following units are scheduled in the msc physical activity and health biology of human performance and health programme · human performance in health chronic disease ageing and sports · analysis of human performance · writing a research proposal · reviews refining the model janneke annegarn msc physical activity and health specialisation biology of human performance and health master s thesis scaling in human simulation models supervisors k meijer phd h.h.c.m savelberg phd so i accepted the challenge of rebuilding the model in such a way that it would allow for the scaling of several parameters like age length and body mass i was warned in advance that this would involve quite a lot of math and so it did but it was fun nonetheless as the original simulation model was developed in denmark there i went studying every aspect of it getting right to its core in close cooperation with my danish colleagues we refined the model it got me my master s degree and more as for now i have been appointed to the position of lecturer and researcher at maastricht university our work has already met with some international acclaim and two publications will soon see the light of day one with myself as first author and another in which i participate as co-author the research for this thesis took me to denmark but of course it all started here in maastricht with the observation that the standard simulation model for human muscle movement often does not predict the values we measure the main reason for this we soon realised is that the model becomes unreliable if one diverges too much from the `standard human i.e a male 40 years of age and weighing some 75 kilograms sounds familiar well it really isn t many people don t fit this profile 16 master s programmes in health sciences msc 2010 17

cardiovascular diseases ischemic stroke type 2 diabetes colon cancers osteoporosis depression and fall-related injuries training programmes also show that physical activity can improve the health status and quality of life for patients with for example chronic metabolic disorders and inflammatory diseases combined with nutritional interventions physical activity interventions can also be used to combat obesity despite the benefits fewer than 30 of adults report engaging in the recommended amounts of exercise health authorities however increasingly realise the importance of physical activity and several government-facilitated physical activity intervention programmes have been implemented yet the long-term effectiveness of such programmes is less than ideal and much remains to be explored regarding the most effective type of interventions the mechanisms involved and how to make interventions more successful these issues determine the core themes of the master s programme career prospects graduates find positions in higher education and research institutes counselling and government agencies and advisory councils potential employers include regional and national a combined diet and physical activity intervention on glucose tolerance among a dutch population with a view to preventing type 2 diabetes in people at increased risk my focus was on the effect of the lifestyle intervention on quality of life we found that the intervention demonstrably improved the mental components of the quality of life i learned a lot during my internship which was a combination of practical and theoretical work it was a fantastic experience with great supervision and guidance it also gave me insight into the world of research which i really loved in the future i plan to finish my programme and find my way as a researcher objectives you learn about the social-psychological environmental genetic and metabolic determinants of sports physical activity and health and about the biological markers of physical activity you also learn to evaluate the effectiveness of existing exercise and sports programmes and to systematically design implement and disseminate intervention programmes yourself after working for four years as a physiotherapist i needed a new challenge and i found it at maastricht university i combined part-time work with part-time study in the problem of course is that you don t know in advance whether a suspect is faking or not but it would help if we knew what the chances are hardly any research had been done on this before we started
