message from the rector dear past present and future parents old boys and members of the wider lindisfarne community as we reach the half way point of the 2012 year the lindisfarne college community can again reflect on what has been an excellent start to the year the boys of the college continue to excel in a wide range of activities in each of our cornerstones and are maintaining the proud heritage of the college ncea results from 2011 were outstanding with pass rates placing us at the very top of boys schools in new zealand with pass rates of 98.6 at level 1 national average 76 100 at level 2 81 and 93.8 at level 3 65 as well as a university entrance qualification being gained by 96.9 of year 12 boys 65 we were well above local and regional rivals these results reflect some excellent teaching hard work by the boys a new programme to teach study skills great work from our learning support staff high expectations and great parental support my congratulations to all those who enjoyed success and who contributed to what were the best ncea results in the history of the college for a college that does not select boys solely on the basis of academic ability these results are wonderful but of course the challenge is to repeat these achievements or even improve on them our sporting year started well with competitive and successful summer exchanges with st paul s collegiate and scots college after excellent performances at our own swimming and athletic sports including some long standing records being broken peter erb s senior javelin record from the 1963 was broken by liam murphy our athletes and swimmers went on to dominate for the second year in a row at the east coast north island championships the winter season is now underway with one new innovation being the establishment of a central north island 1st xv competition this exciting change has provided much sterner and more consistent competition and the results have reflected this with no teams undefeated after three rounds our 1st xv has beaten st john s college and francis douglas memorial college from new plymouth but suffered a close loss away to st paul s collegiate in traditional matches to date they have beaten scots college 15-0 a promising sign ahead of the presbyterian schools quadrangular tournament being hosted by the college in september our football and hockey teams remain very competitive in their local competitions and many lower grade teams are performing well in october 45 boys and staff will begin a rugby tour of the uk led by mr grant gilbert and mr rick ellis a very exciting prospect for all concerned the london branch of the lcoba will meet during the tour do join us if you can the cultural side of the college is flourishing and two of our symphonic bands recently travelled to the annual fielding band festival achieving gold and silver awards and year 12 boy joshua white was named the best soloist at the smokefree rockquest while unable to take the title for a fifth year in a row there was success as tim walker drums won the musicianship award harry greig violin and marcus jackson flute were half of the winning chamber music group at the hawke s bay regional competition playing a piece written by marcus this composition went on to win the national award giving marcus this prestigious prize for the second year in a row the pipe band continues to flourish with 18 boys currently learning the pipes which ensures the scottish heritage of the college is not lost the new college haka has gone from strength to strength and was very well performed at the recent house haka competition it was also a special feature at the funeral of sir rodney gallen a long serving member of the te whaiti nui-a-toi committee and supporter of the college where the whole school honoured this great servant of the college region and nation the te whaiti scheme is now 40 years old and we are holding a reunion in august contact the college for details if you wish to join us the chaplain continues to lead the spiritual life of the college in regular chapels with the help of the boys new technology and both the chapel and worship bands service to others through raising money for causes like the world vision 40 hour famine and involvement in a range of local service activities ensures that the message of the christian faith is also academic excellence bay schools eclipse target for ncea expectations for their achievement outstanding results with all students despite difficulties with a realignment of the girls work hard with a really positive achieving ncea at each level nearly ncea level 1 last year hawke s bay schools culture and they all want to do well half of year 11 and year 12 students are largely performing above national nzqa qualifications deputy chief gaining merit endorsements and a third averages at all levels of the assessments executive richard thornton said statistics of year 11 students reaching excellence recently released nzqa roll based were developed to assist schools to plan principal pauline duthie said the statistics showed results the region should their teaching and learning programmes schoolwas `t hrilled withthe be proud of said new hawke s bay and for parents and whanau to be better outcomebutpa re ntsshouldnot principals association chair and napier informed about their child s progress treat ncea results as a yardstick girls high school principal mary nixon people should keep in mind that we are thrilled with out results but parents however mrs nixon said last year s schools tailor their delivery of courses should treat them with caution she said year 11 students faced challenges with and qualifications for their students when you are finding a school for your changes to level 1 assessments that were individuallearning hesaid child you need to find the school that not backed up with enough nzqa factors such as decile roll numbers and is the best fit for them league tables supplied resources to guide changes courses offered will influence a school s can tell you so much but it is not often nzqa re-aligned assessments so statistics the whole story they shouldn t be course work was standardised across the start and end of decision making subjects with changes to level 1 last year article courtesy of morgan tait hb today she said the school tracked students level 2 this year and level 3 next year 10th april 2012 from year 9 and set realistic but high re-alignment was very difficult last year because exemplars for students to look at came out very late in the year she said it was disappointing and i think it caused more angst than students and teachers needed teachers had to work incredibly hard to ensure that school/decile roll students were well prepared for external examinations when there was a very low supply of resources from nzqa she said the under-supply was having a continued effect on the same students sitting level 2 this year there aren t many resources out for level 2 and this is the issue that it is the same year group so students and teachers who are working hard are still impacted by low numbers of exemplars mrs nixon said despite the barrier high school education lindisfarne college 10 510 98.9 98.9 89.7 across the region was looking good the roll-based data showed on average 73.8 per cent of year 11 students who sat ncea level 1 last year reached the target with 75 per cent of year 12 students getting level 2 and 62.8 per cent of year 13s meeting level 3 the national averages were 65.3 per cent for year 11 students in level 1 68.2 per cent for year 12s in level 2 and 54.6 per cent for year 13s in level 3 the schools in hawke s bay all work really hard to achieve the best results for students mrs nixon said ed ucationis re allyst ro ngin hawke s bay and we are all aiming for continued improvement through our students and we seem to be source 2011 nzqa roll-based ncea statistics getting some good end results tabled results are those sat by students in corresponding year groups and their merit and iona college a decile 9 state integrated excellence endorsements level 1 year 11 students results level 2 year 12 level 3 year 13 school in havelock north achieved roll numbers and decile ratings from ministry of education website www.tki.org.nz page 6

christian dimension from the chaplain the 2012 year has started in an extremely smooth yet busy way for me the highlights have included a training day for our year 9 mentor leaders sixteen year 12 students joined me on the first monday of the term to prepare to lead a small groups of year 9 students in activities and discussions designed to enable our new student intake to make a smooth transition from their previous school into the secondary school environment at lindisfarne we then took part in two outdoor activity days at waipatiki beach this year as with last the year 12 leaders were given the responsibility of organising and leading team building activities this worked extremely well enabling the leaders to mix comfortably together and get to know the year 9 students all are to be congratulated for their efforts as chaplain i have also been encouraged by the manner in which students and parents have positively involved themselves in our weekday and sunday evening chapel services worship is at the heart of who we are and what we do as a school community and it is great to see all who participate doing so in an appropriate and disciplined way this year it is my intention to develop a more reflective and contemplative atmosphere in chapel the lives of our students are extremely busy and the world of which we are all a part tends to be a noisy and demanding one amidst all of this it is so easy not to hear the voice of god speaking to us having the opportunity of being still of sitting in silence and simply listening is an important part of developing a meaningful and life transforming experience of god in our lives the reality for me is that god is meant to be experienced not studied the gospels are full of account of people meeting and experiencing jesus and being sent on their way their lives transformed and changed forever such can be the reality for us all if we take the time to be still to be silent and allow god the opportunity of speaking to us term 2 started in a very positive way due largely to head of school cameron pease and his group of prefects who led the school in our anzac day observance the service was superbly led by cameron and all who participated did so with true conviction and passion the innovation of the school moving out of the chapel to the flag poles for the ode last post and reveille was moving and a meaningfully symbolic way of recognising the sacrifice of so many in securing our freedom rev warren fortune chaplain bible reading winners congratulations to the winners of the 2012 bible reading competitions junior darcy snell 1st thomas mannering 2nd matthew knowles 2nd intermediate school alexander majstorovic 1st josh combs 2nd callum walker 3rd page 7
