from the principal s desk dear sisters and brothers in christ as i sit here on my porch on this beautiful summer evening my thoughts turn to this time last year when ms hanrahan asked me to consider becoming the principal of seton keough high school i found myself at a loss for words i know that is hard to believe but after the initial shock wore off i asked for some time to think and to pray as i drove home i began my dialogue surely lord you don t mean me i prayed and asked the same question over and over again until about 3 a.m and the answer was always the same you are not alone so i conceded your will be done when i met with ms hanrahan the very next day i gave my answer with a caveat if you can accept the fact that i will make mistakes and if you understand that i often ask for forgiveness instead of permission then i can accept your generous offer she smiled and so the journey began oh yes there were some mistakes but there were also wondrous moments of grace and tremendous growth not only on my part but on the part of all the stakeholders of this school spiritually we have increased the variety of opportunities to serve offered by our service learning program increased our acre scores reinstated retreats and offered the sacrament of reconciliation to our student body academically we have revised our curriculum provided professional development observed and learned from our staff and students offered a variety of new courses explored the expansion of our fine arts program witnessed an increase in test scores and the number of college scholarships awarded to our students and watched our dream team reach for the stars institutionally we have successfully established a positive working relationship with holy angels catholic school added an additional computer lab and wi-fi created partnerships to ensure student internships purchased through text book funds ipads and ipods ereaders and software to increase technology for our language lab media center and marillac program investigated a new food lunch program and freshened up our cafeteria/meeting space koegh hi g u a ho norh sc n ho alone i am thankful to all of you for your continued support of the school s mission of sending forth women of honor i am thankful to my colleagues for their professionalism dedication and hard work i am thankful to the students for reminding me how wonderful it is to be young i am thankful to the parents for sharing their daughters with our school community and as in all things i am thankful to god for all these blessings se t o collegially we have worked collaboratively revised our handbooks established a school culture of care welcomed a new school board hired new teachers danced at the prom and worked together to move the school forward titas anc s seton keough high school has accomplished all of this and much more this year and we did it because we are not scien t i so as i look back at the past year and as i look forward to the new school year i smile and i dance i do so love to dance for greg anderson reminds me it is not the final destination but the journey that brings us joy i pray that we continue on this journey together in god s good grace and continued blessings ol 1988 est sen yours in christ principal 2 seton keough high school news orth wo m e of n h angela calamari gf on or din

during one assignment the students were asked to analyze solar activity from may 1998 and make a presentation mr mason says my students executed 100 percent of the presentation dr gross from nasa later began the lunar extreme workshop with a discussion of the may 1998 solar activity and used our exact presentation throughout the preparation and workshop the dream team says they were treated not as students but as adults whose input was respected mr mason says the dream team learned from scientists and engineers and they were surprised to see such a broad spectrum of scientists working together on a common theme the students were also able to discuss general career information and insights in one activity during the workshop the dream team was given a physics problem assigned by dr farrell mr mason says the problem involved solar wind particles moving into a polar crater and sputtering water molecules my students were entertained to see an application of lunar science from something they had done in honors physics next fall the dream team will be off to college secure in the knowledge that they have studied the moon and sun with nasa scientists and may one day be working along side them seton keough s biomedical and engineering programs begin the third year biomedical seton keough picked by the lunar and planetary institute to study the moon during the 2011-12 school year as the summer seton keough news went to press it was announced that seton keough has been chosen by the lunar and planetary institute as one of only 15 schools nationwide to participate in a year-long study of moon craters the team will be chosen in early fall i did you know 1 the moon has an atmosphere it s actually called an exosphere because the atoms and particles never collide 2 the moon s exosphere is a direct result of interactions of the solar wind with the lunar surface 3 with apologies to pink floyd there s no such thing as the darkside of the moon 4 static electricity up to 500 volts exists on the moon s surface because of interactions with the solar wind 5 the moon most likely formed as a result of a planet-sized body colliding with earth about 3.5 billion years ago n our third year of biomedical science we are offering all four courses in the program new to seton keough this year is medical interventions the course follows a fictitious family and allows students to research treatments that would benefit the family s members the students have the challenge of building a working prosthetic arm in biomedical innovation the biomedical science capstone course students research public health challenges in our local community and throughout the world our girls will have the opportunity to finish the class either with independent research an internship or volunteering opportunity in the medical field some of the member of 2012 who started the program in their sophomore year will be taking both medical interventions and biomedical innovation at the same time in order to complete the program biomedical teacher lauren urban engineering o ur project lead the way engineering program will enter its third year for 2011-2012 for the first time each of the four engineering core courses will be offered five rising seniors are taking the junior course digital electronics in summer school so that they will be prepared for their senior capstone course we intend to add a specialty course aerospace engineering in the near future engineering teacher mr william mason www.setonkeough.com summer 2011 11
