masterton intermediate school established in 1960 draws its students mainly from all the contributing schools in the town as well as an increasing number from south wairarapa schools the 2011 staff will consist of twenty teachers three ancillary personnel several teacher aides and care taking staff they make a well balanced team of youthful and experienced people dedicated to the ideal of providing the best in educational opportunity for children of intermediate age level intermediate schools are designed to ensure that they can provide for the rapid change in the physical social intellectual and emotional needs of the young adolescent child in broad terms the aims of the intermediate school can best be summarised under four headings 1 to provide a broad curriculum giving maximum opportunities for growth of each child s talents and interests 2 to use the diverse qualifications of a large staff in reaching the school s objectives 3 to provide quality equipment and facilities needed to implement a varied and satisfying curriculum 4 to introduce children to a certain degree of specialisation in some subjects.

programmes as stated in our aims m.i.s provides a broad base curriculum that allows for the utilisation of teacher strengths and a certain degree of specialisation all children receive instructions in the core curriculum areas of literacy mathematics health and social sciences as well as receiving the opportunities to participate in physical education computer education 2nd languages and the arts music and our specialist programme which includes cooking woodwork music science and ict technicraft the technicraft programme provides students with a minimum of twenty hours instruction in each of the technicraft options cooking woodwork music art science and computers the specialist teachers provide a variety of activities with students using modern equipment and technology for example the computer suite comprises of nineteen apple mac computers linked to a laser printer and all have internet capabilities the library also has eight computers which are linked to the internet the music suite has eighteen keyboards linked into a console extension programmes the school provides a wide variety of extension programmes throughout the year children who have musical talents can develop their interest by joining the choir rock-band orchestra or by hiring an instrument for instrumental tuition those students interested in developing cultural talents can belong to the school s kapa haka camps are held for promising writers while artists are involved in working with a noted local artist a comprehensive sports programme involving eleven intermediates from wanganui levin palmerston north fielding and masterton provide sporting excellence in fourteen events small groups of students travel to havelock north to compete in the mathletics programme children are encouraged to do their best in all activities.

uniform insistence upon wearing the neat practical uniform is part of the school policy designed to last the two year term it is economical easy to maintain and prevents competition in dress the accumulation of lost and unclaimed clothing each term reinforces the need to have all clothing clearly marked before being worn to school preferably with sewn printed name tags please note all uniform items can be purchased from postie plus except skirts which are available from the school office girls uniform grey checked skirt with front pleat that may be purchased through the school office for $50 this skirt is worn all year round a white blouse or white polo shirt short sleeved for summer and/or long sleeved for winter a red mis sweatshirt white socks black leather lace up school shoes a red mis polar fleece top is an optional extra but sweatshirts are compulsory for all students boys uniform grey shorts a grey shirt long or short sleeved or grey polo shirt short sleeved only a red mis sweatshirt grey socks black leather lace up school shoes a red mis polar fleece top is an optional extra but sweatshirts are compulsory for all students girls and boys shoes all students are required to wear black shoes preferably black leather lace up in summer black school sandals may be worn please note leather lace up school shoes are required for all technicraft subjects t1-4 sport shoes can be worn with sports uniform boys and girls physical education uniform red mis polo shirt navy mis shorts uniform sale a uniform sale will be held on thursday 20th january 2011 new skirts and secondhand uniforms will be available for sale all new uniform items can be purchased from postie plus for the 2011 school year boys and girls hats optional red wide brimmed hats are available from postie plus and caps/visors are available from the school office all students are expected to wear the correct uniform

stationery and fees stationery all basic stationery items can be purchased from the school office and parents are urged to use this facility so that the correct type of book is obtained the stationery costs for 2011 are year 7 year 8 $25.00 $25.00 we provide all the stationery on the first day of school this is done for three reasons 1 that all the students start with the correct stationery 2 all students commence work on the first day 3 the stationery is provided at the cheapest possible price and we do appreciate payment in the first month fees the school activity fee for 2011 is $100.00 and is to meet the following costs specialist programme options programme transport costs within borough $50.00 $40.00 10.00 $100.00 parents are requested to pay $25 per term but should they wish to make one payment the fee will be reduced to $90.00 in the case of a family having more than one child at the school there will be a charge of $80 per child reduced to $70 if paid as one lump sum the board is aware that many families are facing financial hardship and that the beginning of a school year is a costly exercise an automatic payment form is enclosed for those parents who wish to pay on a monthly basis.

discipline the school operates a school-wide assertive discipline programme it is based on the need to have a fair and consistent way in which to deal with students who choose not to behave in the appropriate way and who disrupt the teaching and learning within a classroom each class has the same four rules 1 2 3 4 be on task in the appropriate manner be on time and organised for lessons listen to and follow instructions be caring and considerate towards others a student who transgresses the above classroom rules follow these steps step 1 step 2 step 3 step 4 christian name on board surname on board 1 cross 2 crosses 30 minutes after school on the following day letter sent home 60 minutes detained after school for thirty minutes for two consecutive days letter sent home sent to syndicate leader for day and placed on daily report parents contacted step 5 3 crosses please note that detentions are done after school not during the school day if students receive three or more detentions in one month will be placed on daily report this will involve reporting to senior management after interval before lunch and at 2.50 pm each day to monitor behaviour students who choose to continue disobedient behaviour and who provide a harmful and/or dangerous example to other students will be dealt with by senior management as the assertive discipline programme is a positive programme every effort is made to make positive statements about students behaviour and work certificates class awards and weekly/monthly sponsored draws also recognise positive behaviour as do weekly morning tea and monthly lunch with the principal and termly principal s day out.

board of trustees the masterton intermediate school s board of trustees comprises mr mark brown mr peter eschenbach mr robert milne mrs lauren spicer mrs michelle kerr mrs linda cameron chairperson staff representative secretary the board of trustees meets regularly during the term and during this time they discuss matters pertaining to the governance of the school these include staffing buildings and grounds financial matters approval of curriculum related activities and the setting of policies each year the board of trustees conducts a review on the operation of the school this provides parents and students the opportunity to make constructive suggestions about the direction they would like to see the board certainly values your comments and urges you to take part in review similarly should you have any concerns do no hesitate to contact a member of the board so that it can be addressed they are the voice of the community.
