page 6 district 4-a1 august 2012 continuation dg visitation schedule yellow not confirmed please contact cs jeanine 12/5 12/6 12/12 12/13 12/13 12/17 12/19 1/9 1/10 1/16 1/17 stockton san joaquin madera ranchos south stockton los banos gustine chowchilla greenhills newman riverbank tracy tank town modesto sunset turlock 6:30 pm 7 pm change 9/6 6:30 pm noon 7 pm 7 pm 7 pm 6:30 pm 6 pm 6:30 pm 7:30 pm 2 vdg kent christensen i want to thank all of those lions again who have given me the opportunity to be your 2nd vdg for 12-13 i enjoyed meeting with the 14 other incoming 2ndvdge s at the june council of governor s meeting in sacramento these are the other district lions i will be working with the next three years i would encourage clubs to look at the training that will be available at the district meeting now is a good time to train your leaders use the resources that are available to you to improve your club along that same line you should be looking at sending your 1st vp or any lion who is in a leadership role to the leadership institute at harris ranch in coalinga this is a very intense reasonably priced training if you are interested i have the registration forms which should be on the md4 website soon the cost is $250 which includes your meals and room would strongly recommend getting your club to finance this for you it will take place january 19 -21 2013 and it starts at 9 am on saturday and ends monday morning so you most likely can commute there saturday morning and be home in the early afternoon on monday the one shot one life program through lcif is continuing please consider in your budget for 12-13 contributing to lcif lions have the opportunity to end measles worldwide you may think that it does not affect us here in the us but outbreaks still occur in the us i certainly look forward to being able to say i helped eradicate measles lcif is the charitable arm of lions worldwide just recently camp pacifica received its third matching grant for $27,000 it will be used to rebuild the ropes course if you need a program concerning lcif or just need some help with a melvin jones fellowship contact chairman pdg don allen or me once again i want to thank everyone for the tremendous response continued p 9 the latest from camp pacifica camp pacifica 2012 has started brooke and lisa our directors arrived yesterday 30 odd staff and counselors came into camp today kym wright this year s executive director lion carol walter our medical person and athena torrano this year s cook were there too we have 38 campers the first week and brooke is working on getting a final four cleared the second week we have 55 and a few more in the pipeline then there are eight campers in leadership training as well and they stay for both weeks so it s a lively camp this year as ever today madera evening lions cooked a great meal for us all and we have every lunch and dinner covered the rest of this week and the two weeks of camp thank you lions don t forget you are welcome anytime just call director kym wright 831-236-6844 so she knows you are coming we will take you around the activities you can join the campers for lunch or dinner depending what time of day you come and you can admire the 100 new trees and all the improvements that have been made in the last few years so far we have received generous campership donations from just 14 lions clubs in our district thank you to those clubs your support is so appreciated we look forward to receiving at least one campership of $300 from every club yours in lionism on behalf of the whole california lions camp board lion jill loving secretary

august 2012 district 4-a1 page 7 california lions camp it is an exciting time at camp pacifica ­ the kids are ariving and camp is getting under way if you can find time in the next two weeks come up to camp pacifica and see your camp full of exciting activities a big thank you to kym wright for all her work to make this years camp a great success the camp had to do a lot of equipment repair this year the attached pictures show our dump truck after and engine overhaul and repairs thank you to the ceres ­ turlock hilmar-irwinstevinson lions clubs who donated $1000.00 each towards the repairs of the truck this year the madera county health department is requiring camp pacifica to water its roads for dust control we are renovating the old denair lions club water tank making it water tight and adding a new pump and spray bar a big thank you to woody jorritsma of hilmar for his expertise in building water trucks will paint the tank later when you arrive at camp this year please take a look at our new $1500 jumbo pool sweep donated by george and kay mcatee thank you another thing to look at is our 100 redwood trees they are growing like crazy a special thank you to pdg steve granlees for this project and many others our horses and their feed just arrived at camp ­ thank you to pdg norman and helen clark they haul the horses and feed every year and care for them all year long at their ranch i would like to thank pdg jim and jill loving dianne peterson pdg steve granlees and all the camp pacifica board of directors for all their many hours of work for camp pacifica the november district meeting will be held at camp pacifica see you there pdg russ custer camp pacifica board president pdg steve granlees questions regarding pig feed tickets contact lion wyman dickerson 209 304-8094 or wymand@volcano.net maximum of 200 diners tickets $25.00 6 pm no host bar 7 pm dinner.

page 8 d lpcci continued district 4-a1 august 2012 lpcci the latest jim no longer has to crawl on his hands and knees to get his shoes in the morning sue no longer has to ask strangers to hand her a can from the bottom shelf in the grocery store betty no longer eats lunch alone in the cafeteria ed is safer while driving there is one common factor in these diverse situations ­ a highly trained dog from canine companions for independence has changed all their lives if that is not enough they have a faithful nonjudgmental companion who will be the social bridge to other people in all situations these cci dogs like ellie vi and janel are raised by a volunteer and provided for free to people with disabilities and cci checks in with the graduates people with the dogs regularly to insure that the marriage is going well that the graduate and the dog are successful in 2011 cci matched 262 dogs with people with disabilities a record number of dogs how can you help i m glad you asked have an lpcci program at your club become a member club of lpcci in almost all cases for $200 or less per year do you have a member who likes dogs who you would like to honor there are many opportunities to give them an award for as little as $100 contact me to arrange a program for your club we have 4 lions ready to provide a very interesting program would you like to see what cci and all the volunteers do to make a difference in someone s life come join me at the august 17th graduation in santa rosa at 1:45 pm i will present ellie to her breeder caretaker this volunteer will keep ellie who will have puppies eventually 5 litters 1 per year who will grow up to be service dogs as a puppy raiser i will be happy to see a dog that i raised or one of ellie s pups teamed with a person who will be more independent i will be able to say that i helped make that happen puppy raisers raise miracles one at a time we help provide exceptional dogs for exceptional people pdg don allen ipp of western region lpcci the greatest honor any lion or puppy raiser can have is for a cci puppy to be named after him/her meet dallen named after pdg don allen outgoing pres isn t she a doll matching bellies will be fun to go to her graduation ed top club dallen is the purple collar bottom right corner with litter mates ed new top club chairperson is lion claudia miller 3909 shawnee drive modesto ca 95356 209 595-1844 cmiller@howardtrainingcenter.com please see new district directory for rules contact her with questions

august 2012 district 4-a1 page 11 have you ordered your lci peace poster kits yet they are presently on sale from the club supplies sales department at international headquarters october 1 is the deadline to purchase kits november 15 is the postmark deadline for a club to send one winning poster to the district governor december 1 is the postmark deadline for a dg to send one winning district poster to multiple district council chairperson february 1 is the date by which international winners are notified medicalert continued i know medicalert is just a phone call away when natalia is having one of her seizures and i m panicked i know that medicalert is going to provide her medical information in an instant says theresa natalia s mother it has been an incredible year for the lions ­ medicalert children s program together we have accomplished so much as of june 30 2012 the lions of md-4 have protected close to 60 children with medicalert memberships and life-saving medical ids we have 20 active lions clubs participating in the program and hope to double that number through the coming year the lions in participating clubs have donated over $18,000 to date and it s steadily growing if your club is not yet participating in the lions ­ medicalert children s program what are you waiting for contact lion terry anderson at 209-634-0203 and get with the program our lions ­ medicalert children s program really started growing when we featured 3 years old natalia on the outside natalia is just like any other three-year-old but she struggles daily with severe medical conditions in addition to being legally blind natalia has diabetes insipidus id an uncommon condition that occurs when the kidneys are unable to conserve water while filtering blood her conditions force her to follow a strict diet of low sodium foods and no carbonated drinks ­ tough to accomplish in this day and age natalia also lives with tactile defensiveness meaning she has sensory modulation difficulty resulting in the inability to tolerate touch stimulation natalia is one of the many children who benefit from medicalert foundation s sponsored program supported by generous donors and lions like you in natalia s case her membership is fully paid by the hilmar-irwinstevinson lions club merced leo s ­ first leo s club to join the lions ­ medicalert children s program on may 2 2012 ten of the merced high leo s club visited medicalert foundation s headquarters in turlock ca and presented the foundation with a check for $600 the merced leo s had worked through the school year doing car washes and exhibiting in front of local grocery stores to raise money for the children s program this particular donation will go towards the protection of six children with medical conditions most in need the remaining dollars will be contributed by medicalert foundation from individual donations received by their members to ensure the children are protected through a ten year span choua vang the treasure of the merced high school lions says it best i care deeply about others i want to become a nurse one day and help children with medical conditions medicalert already helps those in need and i want to be a part of that see page 12 for
