mathematics for industry mi the high technology celebrated today is essentially a mathematical technology e.e davis president of exxon r&d the two-year programme mathematics for industry aims to provide students of university master s level with a broad post-master education qualifying them for mathematicsoriented positions in industry the focus is on training in solving industrial problems through mathematical means developing social and communicative skills and writing reports an industrial mathematician is able to detect where and when mathematical expertise is needed knows how to become and stay involved possesses modeling skills to solve problems from practice and is open to the world of external mathematical knowledge the industrial mathematician cannot rely on mathematical expertise only the ability to communicate with team members make decisions negotiate and persuade are just as crucial for optimal functioning in an industrial environment the industrial mathematician uses mathematics as a tool to come to a desired solution the contribution of the industrial mathematician is seldom a purely mathematical one and always put into the context of another field this is very much in contrast with the practice of a scientific mathematician industry and mathematics technological developments that determine the position of dutch industry in the international market demand industrial research and development departments to possess knowledge and skills regarding advanced mathematical techniques numerical simulation based on mathematical models replace expensive experiments measurement accuracy is only fully taken into account by means of dedicated algorithms data traffic is steered by stochastic models of high mathematical level increase of product quality and customer directedness require advanced statistical techniques more and more mathematicians in industry will be deployed to contribute to the development of products to the design and control of production processes and to the analysis of markets programme structure courses and training the application scope of mathematics in industry is wide the programme is therefore divided into three specializations an orientation

towards technical application t-orientation an orientation towards communication and information c/i-orientation and an orientation towards business applications b-orientation the programme of twenty four months can be roughly split into two equal parts of twelve months a course part and a training part courses are specializing or broadening dependent on the selected orientation in the training part we distinguish workshops themes and projects in the first year trainees carry out three short term industrial projects four themes and two workshops in these activities trainees work together to solve problems introduced by representatives from industry final project the programme is completed with an eight month project which is executed within a professional industrial environment the programme desires its trainees to act as an employee of the company where he final project is executed having successfully completed the project the trainee receives the diploma of professional doctorate in engineering pdeng and is registered at kivi dutch institute of engineers as technological designer application trainees in the programme mathematics for industry are employees of technische universiteit eindhoven in the position of technological designer in training toio the programme is designed for master s degree graduates in mathematics or in closely related fields such as physics econometrics electrical and mechanical engineering candidates should complete the application form and send in the necessary documents http www.win.tue.nl oowi to the secretary of the programme the address is shown on the back cover the next step in the procedure is an assessment during a modeling week for one week teams work on problems brought in by a particular company each team consists of applicants and trainees about sixteen applicants can join a modeling week after a successful modeling week candidates are invited for an application interview candidates are informed on the decision directly after the interview modeling weeks take place twice a year in the last week of march and september.
