17th sunday in ordinary time july 29 2012 readings for the week of july 29 2012 sunday monday tuesday wednesday thursday friday saturday next sunday 2 kgs 4:42-44/eph 4:1-6/jn 6:1-15 jer 13:1-11/mt 13:31-35 jer 14:17-22/mt 13:36-43 jer 15:10 16-21/mt 13:44-46 jer 18:1-6/mt 13:47-53 jer 26:1-9/mt 13:54-58 jer 26:11-16 24/mt 14:1-12 ex 16:2-4 12-15/eph 4:17 20-24/jn 6:24-35 ©liturgical publications inc 17th sunday in ordinary time when i was growing up fishing vacations were the norm these were always guy trips in which my father took my brother and me along with my grandpa and great uncle to a cabin in northern wisconsin there were two places we would frequent usually alternating from year to year both had good rivers with flowages that were created by dams originally constructed by the civilian conservation corps during the years of the great depression on those trips my grandfather would tell stories about how difficult the depression days were he would always include anecdotes about people who had to fish every day in lakes ponds and rivers just to be able to eat grandpa would always end those stories with a line like you had better fish today as though that is all you re going to have to eat it was his effort to spur us on to bring in a good catch if only the fishing of my youth had been as easy as the miracle in this weekend s gospel here was enough fish to feed five thousand all because a boy had two of them in a basket along with five barley loaves sitting in a boat with my line in the water and the bobber floating and hook dangling i could only imagine what it would be like to have so many fish wishing for miracles does not make them happen we will be reading from john s gospel until the end of august and as we will hear in the weeks to come the work of jesus is much more than giving people enough bread and fish to eat even in these difficult economic times we may not have to fish as if that is all we will have to eat today but we must accomplish the work of god which as we will find out next week involves bringing others to faith maybe we do have to go fishing but not for fish ©2012 liturgical publications inc the spotlight this week shines on petrucci ice fruit storage inc please patronize this advertiser 3
