saint john baptist de la salle would be lost both to the church and to civil society his initial efforts led him to organize the teachers who services he had secured into a religious community called the brothers of the christian schools de la salle inspired these teachers with the following principle you are under the obligation to instruct the poor you should therefore have a great tenderness towards them and supply their spiritual needs to the best of your ability looking upon these children as members of jesus christ and as his much loved ones meditation for the feast of saint nicholas alert to the needs of his time de la salle was an innovator in the development of teacher training program and in curricular and pedagogical practices he regarded a school as a community of believers working cooperatively to achieve a shared vision de la salle envisioned teachers as ministers of grace who exercise their vocation daily by instructing youth in the principle of the gospel as well as in the various academic and vocational subjects his teachers thus helped young people to commit themselves to the teachings of the gospel to develop loyalty to the catholic church and to prepare themselves for productive citizenship the bedrock principle of making oneself available to the students is a hallmark of lasallian pedagogy s living the lasallian legacy here at the hall aint john baptist de la salle 1651-1719 opened his first school in rheims his birthplace in northwhile the brothers and their spirituality have primarily shaped the culture of the school our numbers have gradually decreased over the years our lay colleagues have proudly studied and taken ownership of this educational legacy to provide the same level of dedication and vision as our forebearers have done calvert hall s faculty and staff are a community of believers who work cooperatively to achieve a shared vision eastern france in 1679 he was convinced that without the christian schools some poor children men of intellect men of faith men of integrity these are the virtues that all hallmen aspire to be as he journeys through calvert hall these are the guideposts to eventual success and significance in his life they are timeless as brother gabriel cecilian cannon long-time principal of calvert hall remarked on the principal s page of the 1958 cardinal gold yearbook the real worth of a calvert hall education is its lasting effect if in the years to come on reading this book you can honestly say you are living the faith then our existence is justified timeless indeed live jesus in our hearts forever it is not uncommon to see mr augie miceli and mr john thaler tutoring a number of their math students during prehomeroom hours or br don alger sitting down in the dining hall with a group of juniors to review for a chemistry test during the students lunch period i cannot remember a time when the admissions office is not filled with baseball students assisting each other in homework or other assignments i am sure if i was present in 1958 i would see brother gratian john herron brother gabriel of mary patrick phillips or brother andrew dinoto doing the same thing at the old hall times have changed but the culture has not brother joseph juliano fsc calvert hall was founded in 1845 more than 170 years after the first school opened in rheims it is the oldest of the lasallian schools in the usa our campus is a buzz with activity nearly 24/7/365 it is a vibrant and vital part of the educational fabric of baltimore and the institute next issue a sign of the times being a man of intellect faith and integrity in today s world 2 w w w .c a lv e rt hall c o m
