messages of goodwill josÉ manuel barroso president of the european commission head of the euyo s honorary patrons `music is the language of feelings as kant once said for this reason it is up to young people to embrace this universal language cross boundaries and share our musical heritage while imbuing it with new life the artistic choices for this summer tour exemplify the richness and variety of our european repertoire however it is the ethos of the european union youth orchestra to which i would like to give pride of place here since 1976 the orchestra supported by the european commission has played a vital role in promoting young people s access to and awareness of music it upholds values such as sharing commitment and communication which are essential in extending the performance of music and musical culture to a wider base united by their talent these young musicians demonstrate and reinforce the attachment of european people to our cultural heritage and our capacity for constant renewal and openness to the future thanks to their commitment to this initiative the summer tour 2012 programme promises to be full of feeling herman van rompuy president of the european council i am delighted that the young musicians of the european union youth orchestra will return to europe for their summer tour 2012 after their landmark tour to the united states of america earlier this year the message of hope for the future that this orchestra made up of talented musicians aged between 14 and 24 from all four corners of europe brings is surely one that will resonate with audiences across the union it is also highly fitting that the euyo should take part in the cultural olympiad since the spirit of perseverance and hard work that imbues the olympic athletes is one that can also be found in these talented young musicians i am particularly pleased that they will perform their specially commissioned piece twenty-seven heavens in germany and the netherlands as well as in the united kingdom thus allowing an even wider audience to enjoy the spirit of the games i wish all the young musicians of the euyo a highly successful tour androulla vassiliou commissioner for education culture multilingualism and youth it gives me great pleasure to see the european union youth orchestra paying a special tribute to some of the greatest composers of film music in their 2012 summer tour the orchestra s tremendously successful us tour this year once again showed how these young and dedicated european musicians manage to instil the audiences with their love for music what lies ahead of them is a promising career and what lies ahead of us as the audience is a series of passionate performances in some of the most renowned concert halls and at international festivals across europe the commission should be proud of having supported such a high-quality orchestra for years and i am personally very pleased to congratulate the euyo upon the newly-commissioned piece by british composer richard causton and wish the orchestra every success for its premiere and the summer tour as a whole 4

and secretary general euyo co-founder message from joy bryer t above joy bryer at the kennedy center for the performing arts washington dc april 2012 his summer while the euyo is on tour around europe the eyes of the whole world will be focussed on the london 2012 olympics the ideals and aims of these two great projects have much in common the pursuit of excellence by both the athletes and our young musicians the experience of living together coming from all different social political and religious backgrounds and the determination to work phenomenally hard to demonstrate to mankind and especially the young that self-worth and self-awareness can lead one to reach for and attain the stars the european union is facing difficult times like the olympic participants and our young musicians however the union s member countries should hold on passionately to their belief in the power of the eu s aims and ideals we the young people of europe are sure that they will break through the finishing line showing the whole world that 27 countries speaking with one voice can bring our hopes and dreams to fruition the next generation deserves our undivided and unconditional support this summer s musical programme could not be richer or more diverse nor more challenging for our talented young players it renews auld acquaintances with the edinburgh festival last visited in 2003 and closes in rimini last visited in 1996 but this time christening a brand new hall the first orchestral project is quite a departure for us a film music programme conducted by a new friend from belgium dirk brossé artistic director of the international film festival in ghent a film composer conductor embracing scores from over 75 years of cinema and great classical works adopted by the movies we honour the greatest living composer of film music john williams who celebrated his 80th birthday in february with five of his finest scores played alongside works to demonstrate europe s vital contribution to this genre music from germany france the uk and italy another highlight of the year is the euyo s first-ever commission a concert opener by richard causton as part of the cultural olympiad associated with the london olympics embracing its focus on youth internationalism and creative excellence and appropriately receiving its uk premiere in the athens of the north richard has been working on the piece in workshops at our past three residencies and his synergy with our players has strongly coloured the work in its final form in recognition of our very special relationship with bolzano the central work in our second period this summer is busoni s monumental piano concerto played by one of the few bravehearts to tackle this epic work garrick ohlsson who won the busoni competition in bolzano when he was younger than most of the euyo s players returns to the city to make his euyo début under the baton of our very special italian maestro gianandrea noseda the busoni concerto was inspired by danish writer adam oehlenschläger s verse drama aladdin and again drawing upon great literature our third orchestral work by richard strauss featured this year is also sprach zarathustra from friedrich nietzsche s influential novel as the orchestra journeys across switzerland en route from darmstadt to stresa mid-tour doubtless players will remember lake silvaplana where we stayed last summer and the location of the novel s genesis also sprach zarathustra also connects the two halves of the summer programming opening our film concerts just as it prefaces kubrick s epic 2001 a space odyssey the other two great showcase works we perform allude to our olympic celebrations this summer debussy s nocturnes and respighi s feste romane the latter like film music without the film the former 12

euyo in bolzano es sind dreißig jahre vergangen seit das europäische jugendorchester zum ersten mal in bozen zu gast war drei jahrzehnte sind eine genügend lange zeitspanne um eine ausgewogene bilanz zu ziehen und die kulturelle ausstrahlung die diese initiative auf unsere stadt hat zu würdigen besonders unterstreichen möchten wir das zunehmende interesse der bevölkerung für das aktive musikalische engagement das jung und alt gleichermaßen betrifft die liebe zur musik ist ohne großen aufruhr im stillen gediehen wie die bäume in einem wald und sie hat ein für unser land absolut außergewöhnliches ausmaß erreicht die südtiroler institutionen haben diesem phänomen erfreulicherweise eine angemessene aufmerksamkeit geschenkt und konkrete wirksame maßnahmen für dessen förderung getroffen es darf aber nicht vergessen werden dass diese positive kulturelle entwicklung im nährboden unserer stadt wurzelt die in den vergangenen 30 jahren auch dank der ständigen `einwanderung von jungen musikerinnen und musikern der euyo imstande war stimulierende inhalte in diese richtung bereitzustellen die zusammenarbeit mit dem europäischen jugendorchester wird auch weiterhin ein wichtiger ansporn dazu sein die blüte der künstlerischen und musikalischen sensibilität dieser stadt weiter zu entwickeln der bürgermeister dr luigi spagnolli die stadträtin für kultur und aktives zusammenleben patrizia trincanato il sindaco dr luigi spagnolli l assessora alla cultura e alla convivenza patrizia trincanato the mayor dr luigi spagnolli cultural councillor patrizia trincanato quest anno ricorre il 30° anniversario dall arrivo della euyo nella nostra città un periodo sufficientemente ampio per poter esprimere delle considerazioni generali e consolidate sugli effetti della contaminazione culturale che questo evento ha provocato per la nostra città uno degli aspetti che quest anno vorremmo sottolineare è la crescita dell interesse verso la pratica musicale attiva da parte di uno strato sempre crescente di cittadini dai bambini fino ai pensionati si tratta di un fenomeno che è cresciuto in modo silenzioso come le moltitudini di alberi in una foresta ma assume una dimensione assolutamente straordinaria ed eccezionale per il nostro paese certamente le istituzioni della nostra provincia hanno poi saputo dare attenzione e risposte concrete con strumenti idonei ma quello che è importante rimarcare è che queste nuove spinte culturali affondano le radici in un terreno che in questi 30 anni si è continuamente arricchito di spunti e di contenuti grazie anche alla `migrazione annuale dei giovani musicisti della euyo nella nostra città che in questi suoi passaggi ha reso e continuerà a rendere ogni anno la nostra città più fertile al fiorire delle sensibilità artistiche e musicali dei nostri concittadini this year we celebrate the 30th anniversary of the arrival of the euyo to our city a timeframe that is sufficiently long to allow us to reflect on some of the ways in which this event has influenced the cultural life of the city one of the aspects that we would particularly like to highlight is the extent to which the city s inhabitants of all ages from children to pensioners have shown an ever-greater interest in taking an active part in musical activities this phenomenon has grown as softly and quietly as the trees grow in a forest but it has taken on an absolutely exceptional and extraordinary dimension for our region without a doubt the institutions of our province have taken note and responded to this growing demand with appropriate tools it is also important to stress however that these new cultural impulses have their roots in a land which in the past 30 years has been continuously enriched with ideas and inspiration thanks to the annual `migration of the young musicians from the euyo to our city an event that continues to render that land ever more propitious for the flowering of the artistic and musical sensibilities of our fellow citizens 15
