issue 9 july 2010 welcome welcome to the ninth edition of the mfl sunderland primary newsletter and the last edition for this school year the aim of the newsletter is to keep all primary school mfl teachers informed of the latest developments inprimary language teaching nationally regionally and within the local authority previous editions of the newsletter can be found on the mfl sunderland website at www.sunderlandschools.org/mfl-sunderland/primary-newsletters.htm i would love to hear your comments and feedback about the newsletters please email them to clare.seccombe@gmail.com upskilling french lessons for primary teachers many of the delegates at sunderland s spring into primary languages conference in march identified their own linguistic upskilling as an immediate training need as a response to this we are delighted to bring you details of a free upskilling course for non-specialist teachers the course will be led by members of the mfl department at st anthony s girls school sunderland s second language college it aims to increase your confidence and knowledge of french vocabulary increase your awareness of french pronunciation and help you to learn games and activities that can be used in the classroom full information follows on page 3 of this newsletter don t forget that you can also upskill yourself in your own time by subscribing to our primary french podcasts the podcasts complement the sunderland scheme of work for primary french and will enable you to use french more confidently and correctly during your lessons in school www.sunderlandschools.org/mfl-sunderland/resources-pr-fr-podcasts.htm primary french assistants in october we will be welcoming into the la three french assistants who will be working in sunderland primary schools they are now fully deployed for the autumn and spring terms but there are still some vacancies for the first half of the summer term 3rd-27th may 2011 if you would like to host one of the assistants in your school please email clare.seccombe@gmail.com giving your school s name headteacher s name name of the teacher who will act as mentor for the assistant and a brief overview of the french that your pupils have done so far the assistant would be available to work in your school for either 4 hours a week or 6 hours a week wondering what the assistant could do in your school they can assist the french teachers in the classroom and also work with smaller groups of children they enhance intercultural understanding for staff and pupils by showing photos of where they come from and other realia they provide a model of good pronunciation for staff and pupils alike in addition schools who host an assistant are entitled to a foundation tier international school award.

european day of languages edl the european day of languages has been celebrated on 26th september every year since 2001 it aims to celebrate the 6000 languages that are spoken in the world and the rich and diverse cultures that lie behind them and to show people across europe how important languages are and the fun that can be had learning them would you like to celebrate edl 2010 in your school cilt the national centre for languages has some useful resources sheets for primary schools http tinyurl.com/37ayu2t and you can also order pens stickers balloons and many other things from their shop http tinyurl.com/m8s3ka there are also some badges stickers and activity sheets available from routes into languages http www.routesintolanguages.ac.uk/love the modern foreign languages environment mfle from learning and teaching scotland has lots of ideas and some free-to-download multi-lingual posters http tinyurl.com/358krwj there are some lovely iwb activities available from esther mercier the genius behind the a tantôt website http www.mflextra.com/edlmain.htm if you want more ideas you could consult the edl 2010 wiki maintained by local languages teacher dominic mcgladdery http edl2010ideas.wikispaces.com routes into languages has also launched some edl competitions you and your colleagues and pupils could win up to £750 with the annual edl competition from all in association with many other regional organisations who care about languages the deadline is monday 4th october students competition £50 voucher for each key stage winner ks1-5 plus runner-up prizes of edl resources entries must involve words in a language or languages other than english and should be no larger than a sheet of a4 paper mark each entry with the pupil s name age class and school as well as any necessary information about the language chosen they welcome joint entries but please remember to credit any collaborators and to share the prize http www.routesintolanguages.ac.uk/northeast/news/1835 teachers competition £100 voucher for each key stage winner ks1-5 plus runner up prizes of vouchers up to £50 tell them about your favourite edl activity this doesn t have to be a new activity just your tried and tested favourite it could be a starter plenary or settler activity tell them in no more than one side of a4 the resources required for the activity the instructions or context the activity should be innovative a proven success replicable either across languages or key stages it could be a toy poster prop or a book you can support your application with one additional sheet of evidence such as photos quotes and feedback or resources created as a result of the activity the winning entries will be collated in a good practice guide http www.routesintolanguages.ac.uk/northeast/news/1836 send all your entries marked edl competition to links into languages ecls king george vi building newcastle university ne1 7ru newsletter produced by clare seccombe ©mfl sunderland 2010 july 2010 http www.sunderlandschools.org/mfl-sunderland
