computer conundrums page 3 bromance page 4 josh-walking page 5 mcc times minot public schools december 2009 life after high school by annaka smith seniors at magic city campus start thinking into the future around this time about college plans and what to expect about them donte smart and becky berg two seniors from minot high school share their thoughts worries excitement and concerns about college life both plan on attending a four-year college and have a lot of options becky berg is looking at north dakota state university and university of north dakota and donte smart is looking at north dakota state university university of north dakota oklahoma state university university of miami and minot state university a big thing for these two seniors is moving away from home i need to explore and learn to live on my own said becky for her dorm life gives her an opportunity to meet new people donte added onto the subject of moving away also i m excited because i ll have a lot more freedom but i know i m going to miss my parpicking a major and a minor for donte and becky wasn t a hard thing when asked there was no thinking about the question donte wants to major in physical therapy and minor in athletic training becky wants to major in exercise therapy and minor in phycology before college starts donte and becky put a lot of though into what they plan on doing for the summer i plan on taking a senior trip to cancun and visit family donte explained becky shared what her plans are i am going to get a job and go to the lake for the underclassmen donte and becky gave some advice make sure your grades are up and start looking at colleges early donte insisted save your money and do well in school keep your grades up and apply for scholarships becky added photos provided by annaka smith ents a lot he always says that dorm life has a lot of pluses and minuses it is nice to live on campus but there are a lot of distractions the thing that excites becky about college is the social life she is also excited about the classes because they are more related to your interests and your schedule is more flexible donte is excited to meet new people but when there is excitement there is also fear some things that can scare a student about college is living on your own having to pay for college pay yourself and having too much freedom some ways to pay for college are by getting scholarships student loans grants and some help from your parents college vs high school by dagny knutson making the transition from high school to college may be more difficult for some than others some students may go out of state for college or may stay home to go to school either way entering college is probably one of the biggest changes in a student s educational life maggi beck who was a senior last year at minot high now attends the university of wisconsin milwaukee there she participates in athletics as a competitive swimmer she said the biggest difference between high school and college were the classes and the living environment i live in the dorms with a roommate which can be annoying sometimes also the classes are more spread out and you don t have that much homework there are also a lot more students in the freshman classes sometimes up to 100 or 200 students said maggi in this case getting to know your teacher might be difficult it might be helpful to contact the teacher by e-mail through the school website if you are in need of help students going into their first year of college will need a few supplies that they probably didn t need in high school for example a laptop is widely used around college campuses by students and are very helpful you might need a printer to print of assignments and information added maggi along with a printer and laptop students need the basics like notebooks and pencils let s face it college can be fun but it s not easy maggi said starting college has a few more struggles than in high school i have to study a lot more because the tests are really hard and sometimes the teacher doesn t go into detail now some might be wondering whether a car is needed your first year of high school it probably depends on where you go and what you plan on doing in college for example most students especially those planning to stay close to home will probably want a car but if you are like maggi and are going far away and are participating in athletics a car probably won t be need usually in this case when you go to the grocery store mall or movies you ll probably go with other teammates that already have a car in other words carpool maggi says her team gets free bus tickets and the bus takes them where ever they ned to go around campus all in all college is an experience unlike high school the best thing about college is having more freedom because you don t have to worry about your parents at home and you meet a lot of new friends said maggi some tips for high school seniors from quintcareers.com go to all orientations do you really need to go on yet another campus tour yes the faster you learn your way around campus and around all the red tape the more at ease you ll feel and the better prepared you ll be when issues arise get to know your roommate and others in your residence hall the people you live with most of whom are going through similar experiences and emotions are your main safety net not only this year but for all your years you may change roommates after the first semester or you may stay roommates for all four years just take the time to get to know your fellow first-year students get organized in high school the teachers tended to lead you through all the homework and due dates in college the professors post the assignments often for the entire semester and expect you to be prepared buy an organizer a pda a big wall calendar whatever it takes for you to know when assignments are due find the ideal place for you to study it may be your dorm room or a cozy corner of the library but find a place that works best for you to get your work done while avoiding as many distractions as possible go to class obvious right maybe but sleeping in and skipping that 8 am class will be tempting at times avoid the temptation besides learning the material by attending classes you ll also receive vital information from the professors about what to expect on tests changes in due dates etc for more tips get it online at http mcctimesonline.blogspot.com page 1

news employment a big part of student life by nora mihalick with holidays coming up and college approaching students are always thinking of ways to earn money from the age of 16 most parents make their kids work so they can pay for their own things and start to get the feel of living in the real world the only problem with kids working is trying to fit it into their school schedules between sports school and extracurricular activities finding a job willing to schedule your work around these things might be difficult annaka smith a senior works at old navy and likes that they are flexible with her schedule this year i enjoy working there sometimes but it usually depends on the day and the department i am working in she likes that working gets her cash and likes the people she works with too the only downfall is that it sometimes gets boring on the other hand terence younger and aaron kohlman also seniors both work at jobs that happen to conflict with their school schedules at times mostly because they can t work during school like their jobs would like them to but both jobs are lenient with giving time off another big thing that kids look for in jobs is the cash they will be earning no one wants to get paid less then anyone else and kids always search for easygoing high paying jobs annaka terence and aaron all said they get paid more than minimum wage but in return get benefits from their jobs next time you are looking for a job think of all the things to consider before looking for a job do you have enough time in the day and will the place you are working be flexible with the schedule you would like also check out how much you are being paid and if it is going to be a job you enjoy working at hopefully you will find a job that is just right for you staying clean in school by kevin tofteland here at minot high school their is a student will talk about staying clean in school her name is kaitlyn bailey she thinks all of minot high school students should wash their hands four times a day when students wash their hands they should use their sleeves to open the door when leaving the bathroom people need to take a shower before they go to school and after school when they get home students should wash their hands or use germ-x after they sneeze or cough they should cough into their sleeve so it doesn t spread any germs students should never eat food off the floor all the bathrooms lunchrooms and all the tables in the school are cleaned two times a day that s the right way to be clean in school so can i ask all the students can we all try to kill all the germs in our school and stay clean said all the janitors keeping hydrated 101 by cha nel williams keeping hydrated is very important to your health according to disease control and prevention 240 people die in the u.s of heat related illnesses here are some tips to keeping hydrated 1 limit caffeine intake caffeine natural dehydrated 2 upon waking drink 16 oz it gives your body/system the much needed jump for the day 3 don t wait until your thirsty to drink water 4 consume a gallon a day more than that and it will flush the body of much needed vitamins minerals 5 for every hour of working out consume 16 oz s of water when finished with your workout drink 8 oz s 6 bottle water is better for your system 7 water is absorbed more quickly than other fluids cooling you off faster there are signs your body gives you that tells you that your not getting enough water some might think that the symptoms their getting is just that they don t feel that good today when actually their bodies are trying to tell them that they can t handle the heat your exposed to or the kind of strenuous activity you are doing because your all dried out also others may just think that hey im just really thirsty when in fact your dehydrated here are some signs that help you spot dehydration before it escalades flushed skin headaches dry and itchy skin coating of the tongue irritability indigestion lack of concentration and confusion i some cases there are those who don t like the taste or sensation of water some think that energy drinks sport drinks and protein shakes that help you bulk up at the gym are a good for you that they must contain water when in fact they aren t the ingredients that makes them are bad for the body energy drinks have stimulants in them that can actually increase the chances of getting dehydrated while protein drinks increase the work of the kidneys and added it s high fat content it causes calcium as well as water loss also fruit juices are high in sugar and carbohydrates which causes cramps for the athletes as they compete or working out but there are other choices besides water there is watermelon peaches lettuce cucumbers or celery all heathy for you and provides you with nutrients for they day there is nothing like the real thing and that s water so if staying out there on the field, track or gym floor and playing for your team or just simply getting the work out for the body you desire then drinking the proper amount of water that is recommended not doing so could really ruin the chances of a good season or a proper functioning team page 2

around campus students enjoy a variety of christmas traditions by hunter erickson every year people have christmas traditions get together with family have a big dinner and open gifts i went out to ask the students and faculty about their christmas plans sam bucholz says that he ll stay at home and have christmas dinner with his dad s side of the family and then have christmas day with his mom s side of the family there will be a lot of ham says sam sam is also hoping to get dj hero this christmas kyle mcpeak says he s going to be at his aunts house this year i will be opening some presents from santa claus and will be having some turkey and ham for christmas dinner terence younger says he will be at his aunt s to open gifts with the family and having sort of the same dinner as he did for thanksgiving i don t need anything right now its all about giving says terence mr.upton says his plans for christmas this is to stay in minot with the family and watch the kids have fun mr.upton will be having ham and turkey for christmas dinner i want world peace for my christmas gift says the very kind hearted mr.upton i hope that everyone has a great christmas break and have as much fun as you can happy holidays energy drinks affect health by sven zorbaugh energy drinks many people like to drink them but do they know what they are really getting when they drink it in the early sixties the university of florida used the newly formulated gatorade to help give their football team the gators extra energy for their games since then energy drinks like red bull and monster have come to the market bringing with them added caffeine ginseng and taurine all of which is supposed to boost energy caffeine is a widely used stimulant along with ginseng and taurine in just one red bull energy drink there is as much as 80mg of caffeine and in a full throttle 122mg all of the caffeine gives your system a rush and causes you to burn it all off quickly when this happens you go into what is known as a burn out where all your energy is burned at once along with this burn out effect there is also a chance of addiction in an interview with charlotte jackson a student at mcc we discussed her need for caffeine she responded with yes i feel like i need it all the time when i asked her how have energy drinks affected her life she stated that they have affected my life greatly since i m addicted to them and i cant stop drinking them charlotte says also that her favorite energy drink is monster and she knows exactly how much one costs at m&h two dollars and 13 cents although people have tried to get rid of energy drinks they all have failed so it looks like for the future energy drinks will still be widely available mcc times staff contributors hunter erickson leah greenlaw alexa hornecker dagny knutson kaisha lynnes nora mihalick brett morris matthew olds bekka reiter shelby ring annaka smith kevin tofteland josh vannett cha nel williams sven zorbaugh mac vs pc by brett morris here at minot high we have all used an apple computer but do the students really like them or would they rather have a pc to use here at school here at minot high we do have both mac and pc but there is an overwhelmingly amount of macs that we use in the library both labs and the laptop carts the only place you can use a pc is in the career center and only two of the laptop carts have pc i decided to take a poll around the school and get some of the thoughts of minot high students and also one of the principals on the mac vs pc debate i found out that an overwhelmingly 70 preferred pc over mac when asked why we have more macs than pc s at minot high principal mr vollmer responded macs are the computer of choice in education and apple markets better to education eric thoemke a junior at minot high stated i would rather have a mac because the applications are better like garage band and you can make movies and the security plan is better a minot high senior adam peterson who would rather have a pc said pc is going to be better with windows 7 and windows 7 is going to be awesome with all the upgrades they have made according to the data it looks like pc is the computer of choice for minot high but surely the debate will continue with these two computer companies lack of laptop access editorial by dagny knutson looking in the student handbook there are no specific rules against students using their own personal laptops in school the question you may be asking is `are they allowed the answer is simply no occasionally you might see a student bring in their laptop and use it in the commons to watch a movie or play a game but not go on the internet this is becasue students can t access the internet through there own wifi a password is needed through the school system the same goes for an ipod touch a student cannot access the internet without a password if a student is seen using their laptop in any case he or she will be asked to put it away in the office or their locker what about note taking in class if the internet can t be accessed can students still use their laptops for not taking the answer is still no this is because there is no supervision software on the student s laptop for the teacher to use unless there is a special project and/or the software on some of the school s computer is new or hard to use you might be able to use your laptop with the teacher s permission page 3

around campus the power of a bromance by annaka smith words usually cannot describe the friendship that tyler hilzendager and jarid hoffman have but if you had to a bromance would be the best description a bromance is a relationship between two heterosexual males that have a close but non-sexual relationship aristotle once said it is those who desire the good of a friendship for the friends sake that are most truly friends because each loves the other for what he is and not for any incidental quality this is truly what tyler and jarid have tyler and jarid have a certain bond between each other that isn t like any other they are best friends that finish each other s sentences or even say it at the same time when asked how long they d been friends for tyler joked and said out of the womb while laughing the truth is they have been friends since daycare at first the two of them struggled on the word bromance thinking it made their relationship seem slightly more intimate than it really is but learning the real definition of it it grew on them so later jarid replied it s a man-crush with no sexuality in it when tyler isn t sleeping the two of them hang out everyday their best memory together is from 1st grade spitting pencils in mrs haskin s class tyler and jarid look for loyalty and trustworthiness in each other on there spare time they like to play sports like basketball catch snatch and sometimes they even go bowling their favorite activities are to cuddle and tyler likes to smack jarid around a little bit their friendship is beautiful dre a junior at mcc said he also added that it takes guts to have a bromance photo provided by annaka smith deca students to minneapolis by nora mihalick deca central region leadership conference kicked off in minneapolis mn on december 4th 2009 the mhs deca chapter left on december 3rd to head down to the conference and experience the live learn lead leadership conference being held there traveling by bus the mhs chapter was ready to learn more about improving their leadership and communication skills the conference started on friday night with 2,900 kids from 12 different central region states the conference was held at the hilton hotel while also taking place in the target center for a tour on how they manage their business minot took 33 kids both from the marketing and management classes bekka reiter said her favorite part of the whole conference was meeting all the new people while tyrel erickson s favorite part was the opening session the opening session consisted of an introduction of all the state presidents from the 12 states that attended and also a speaker judson laipply i learned alot about getting involved in teamwork said bekka it was fun to meet all the new people while i was there both bekka and tyrel were happy they went on the trip but think that the conference could have been better if there would have been better speakers for all the sessions central region was a definite success for the marketing and management students that attended besides learning leadership skills the kids learned how to work with other people and also being friendly right off the bat some conference sessions helped kids prepare for state deca to succeed onto nationals the conference ended in the morning on sunday december 6th with awards and a motivational speaker parking panic editorial by brett morris when snow comes to minot it seems like it makes bad drivers even worse especially the minot high students parking ability it seems like whenever i drive through the upper parking lot by the senior doors there are always a lot of cars parked crooked taking up more spots than they need too or they are parked too far ahead or behind the line i understand the lines might be covered with snow but let s use some common sense and try and park straighter so you re not taking up two to three spots when i asked mr vollmer about the situation he agreed and said we try and do everything possible to help students see the lines we have mr brecke go out in the early morning and scoop the snow off the lines to help the students see the lines but sometimes students are already here so it makes it difficult for him to do i asked a senior from minot high what he thought about the whole parking thing since he has been through one year already of this and he said people need to stop being so dumb and park straight because i hate parking in the lower lot and having to walk up the hill it seems like when students park they don t care how bad or good it is they just go into the school take some time and park a little better because when you end up running a little late and you see that someone parked really poorly which probably would have opened up a spot for you you probably won t be very happy about it tech battle xbox 360 versus ps3 by josh vannett to some people it s a hobby to some it s an obsession video games are people s way of either wasting their time or just having fun with a few friends none of this would be possible without the two leading game consoles in the world i m talking about microsoft s xbox 360 and sony s play station 3 these two companies have to be very competitive to stay ahead of one another this is where it becomes very difficult to establish which is better so i took it upon myself to see which console some of the students prefer and why after asking people which one they like better the results are just as i expected the xbox 360 came out on top there were many reasons why this console got picked over the ps3 but here are the most critical the playstation put up a good fight in the battle of the consoles so here are a few reasons why some people like it better than the xbox first of all the playstation 3 is a blue ray ready device and a gaming console all in one secondly the playstation does not have the infamous red ring of death that the xbox has the red ring is used on the xbox as an indicator that it is over-heated or damaged in any other way if this happens you may need to send it in to get it fixed or get a new one in the mail overall i d say that the playstation 3 is a great co,nsole if you re just going to watch a blue ray movie or a single player game in the end the xbox kicks its butt with its ability to watch movies instantly and having better online capabilities photos provided by microsoft sony the xbox has better online capabilities such as party chat during games or being able to play as a party with your buddies the 360 is also a netflix ready device which allows you to stream movies instantly onto your xbox over your internet connection and better games for online play page 4

entertainment people pack into new moon review by leah greenlaw new moon the second installment to the twilight saga had people packing into theaters and quickly became a hit just like the book the plot of new moon is the same as the book and remained very faithful to it by movie standards in the movie edward robert pattinson has left forks washington in hopes of keeping bella kristen stewart safe from the dangers his world this causes bella to spiral into a deep zombie-like depression she is an empty shell that is until she realizes a way to see edward again is to keep taking greater and greater risks she grabs some motorcycles and headed over to her childhood friend jacob black played by the superhot taylor lautner for help the two become close friends but jacob has a secret that comes close to tearing their friendship apart it also seems some old enemies have returned and they want bella dead during one conflict in a meadow bella is saved by a pack of supernaturally large wolves then a swirl of events leads to bella in a race against time to italy to save her true love at the risk of her own life despite the fear that new moon would be as unpleasing as the first film the movie surpassed the first film its special effects were excellent especially the wolves which were exactly how i imagined them in the book the soundtrack remained as good as it was in the first but like most of the girls in the theater what i enjoyed most was the wolf pack it was a group of hot guys waking around with their shirts off taylor alone was enough to make me want to move from team edward to team jacob he is not only buff but a very good actor as well i do however have some issues with the film one is kristen s acting she can t act i didn t notice it too mush in the first film but with taylor s excellent performance it became more noticeable especially her breathing she was panting it sounded like she was in heat most of the movie news flash no one breaths like that when they re in love another is the ending in general it was a excellent cliff hanger but it aggravated many people those of use who read the books found it a bit annoying because he only talks about proposing in the second book and does a romantic proposal in the third for those who didn t read the book it is annoying that it just left of there leaving us without an answer even if that was its job over all this movie is one i will definitely be adding to my dvd collection and i think that even for guys who didn t like the first film this one is an improvement because it has more fighting special effects action and not to mention motorcycles in the end it is a great film version of the book with a love that rivals romeo and juliet new moon statistics from boxofficemojo.com total sure you ve seen the segment on the tonight show with jay leno called jay walking jay travels around los angeles and surrounding areas asking people questions about their country or events in history the questions should be very easy to answer for people with a basic education during the segment many people get these basic questions wrong but can usually answer questions about the latest movie stars that have been in the news and this my fellow magicians is how mr leno makes his show funny a few examples of these questions are what color is the white house or in what country is the panama canal located in then after or if they answer the question wrong he ll ask a question that pertains to recent news to see if they know the answer i thought that this would be a fun thing to try out on some students and maybe a few teachers what color is the white house it s kind of like a light tan i think tommy schmidt hahahaha it s white william nordquist who are these people pictures of gov
