the alchemist maktub the alchemist is a novel by paulo coelho first published in 1988 originally written in portuguese it has been translated into 71 languages as of 2011 an allegorical novel the alchemist follows a young andalusian shepherd named santiago in his journey to egypt after having a recurring dream of finding treasure there allegory is a device in which characters or events represent or symbolize ideas and concepts allegory has been used widely throughout the history of art and in all forms of artwork a reason for this is that allegory has an immense power of illustrating complex ideas and concepts in a digestible concrete way maktub means it is written an excellent title for very short incidents described in this book all of them carry deep messages about life some incidents or small very small stories are funny but when you stop smiling, they carry deeper meanings about life, what an amazing way to write about life when reader smiles every now and then and then a message about life goes deeper in his or her soul this is the inspiration that made me decide to adopt the title the alchemist maktub for my valley wheel column this rotary 2012 with the ri theme peace through service the alchemist maktub will chronicle the journey of our club this rotary year it will be a narrative of what will happen in our club s journey like santiago in coelo s allegorical novel which a story of his journey i will follow our quest to achieve what other past presidents have achieved in the past this journey is not the sole journey of president benjie but the whole club its trials failures or success every will be written that is why maktub is an appropriate arabian term for it is written pres benjie as you have all witnessed from the time he accepted the challenge to be its president to the time he accepted the bell and gavel from ipp del is a very interesting character to follow in this story we are all part of the story and we are all part of his journey during his first board meeting last monday july 2 he was confident of what he is doing in that meeting it was attended by no less than pdg efren de guzman his keen adviser pp roland garcia who see to it that he always toe the line pp dindo santos who will help him in membership as well as website hosting and maintenance pp noel flores who will chair rc joam visit and oktoberfest pp dante verano for attendance vp bernard cansana for the governor s visit dir willy reyes for the save marikina watershed project pd nestor garcia who is chairman of ways and means dir chris merino editor in chief of the valley wheel bulletin pe hermie de la paz for building management and public relations treas elmer tan for financial report dir bonie barotilla for promotion of good nutrition pabasa sa nutrition what would like me to write about next or do you have any comments please email me thru val2146@yahoo.com or text me 0917.457.5055 do you have anything to share or talk about we will publish it on our next issue just mail to me happy reading 4
