july 2012 dear parents students and friends of mount saint joseph high school in september of 1977 when i first entered a catholic high school i never realized that my life would change forever on my first day i was greeted by a man with a slight irish brogue sparkling blue eyes and great smile he said welcome to ryken high school you must be george andrews from charles county i hear you want to run cross country i was stunned that this man knew who i was it was only later i realized that i had submitted a personal photo with my school application this was my introduction to the xaverian brothers and their charism i had grown accustomed to going through public school as a relative unknown i was now in an environment where the faculty actually wanted to get to know their students and were going to look after all aspects of their development at ryken i was blessed to have caring brothers and lay teachers who cultivated my interests challenged me academically and took a real interest in developing my faith this was a different type of high school by graduation i had grown in many ways and had a deep appreciation for the gift of a xaverian education and the commitment the brothers and the lay faculty had to their students while it still took me a number of years to discern my vocation as a catholic educator i will always be indebted to the xaverian brothers for their service to me and my classmates i have a solid foundation for understanding what a xaverian school can do for a young person because i lived it in the mid-1990 s as an assistant principal at mount saint joseph i would return to saint mary s ryken to serve on the school board led by another personable irish man xaverian brother james kelly c.f.x brother james always demonstrated a passion for xaverian education which called for developing enduring personal relationships and humble service to the students in their care as i return to the mount after fourteen years of seasoning and education as a catholic school principal i truly understand what it means to return to a xaverian brothers sponsored school since our founding by brother bernardine in1876 mount saint joseph is still fortunate to have a dedicated group of faculty and staff members who understand the need to cultivate the faith of our students encourage their academic pursuits and nurture their individual talents while developing a true interest in taking care of the boys as brother james would often say the xaverian brothers charism is alive and well today with the lay faculty which includes many graduates of xaverian schools just recently i was in attendance at the cathedral of mary our queen for graduation which brought back so many fond memories senior speaker adam gracia talked about his class as brother s class brother james four years ago this class of 2012 came on campus as boys and as adam noted so well in his speech they leave as brothers for life they move on with a wealth of confidence a sense of their rich faith and an idea of what their purpose in life might be it is truly a blessing for me to be able to return home to the mount and the xaverian brothers who did so much for me and continue to do for the students in their care sincerely george e andrews jr president

dear parents students and friends of the mount given the events of the last two years here at saint joseph s mount as brother james loved to call it it is not yet possible for me to reflect on the meaning of it all to me personally and to the school community i am in that limbo between the frenetic pace of a school year especially as we rush toward graduation and the relative peace of summer which actually moves us forward immediately in planning for the coming year i would like to use this newsletter as an opportunity to express my gratitude and that of the mount to the many of you who have supported us in untold ways throughout both years the people on the front line whom your sons see every day are backed up by an incredible corps of staff members without whose hard work we could not accomplish very much at all whether they are cafeteria staff administrative assistants development office staff maintenance and custodial crews and so many more these men and women bolster the work of the school for the benefit of your sons our teachers know their value very well and we honestly consider ourselves lucky to be part of this family brother and i often would talk about the wonderful work done by our parents clubs you cannot be part of this school and not know of the work they do to make our lives easier our mothers club is always at the ready to help out wherever possible and the fruits of their labor always result in major contributions to our financial aid fund and to the school s campaign it is in the day to day little things of friday morning munchies faculty dinners on parent-teacher nights helping decorate for the junior prom on virtually zero notice setting up the fashion show organizing any number of activities that we get a sense of the genuine devotion of these women to their sons and their sons school the dads help us in any number of ways as well providing us with much needed help on our campus clean-up days setting up and taking down for junior and senior prom activities and lending their support to all the parent activities we are very fortunate to have the parent involvement that we enjoy thank you all very much among the best times i ever spent with brother james would be end of the year breakfasts with graduating seniors when we would ask them any number of questions about their experience here we always asked about their best experience in class and they would regale us with tales of this teacher and that one all the while making sure that brother and i knew they were well taken care of in the classroom many often commented that they received lessons well beyond the subject matter from their teachers and many commented on the enduring nature of the relationships they have formed i am so lucky to be a part of a faculty that comes together every day for one purpose and one purpose only ­ to take good care of the boys our alumni are a special group and among them i single out those who have stayed involved i think of joe dukert from the class of 1947 who tirelessly shepherds his classmates to meet for reunions and to contribute to the written word contest each year i think of roger davis from the class of 1955 and his classmates who meet for lunch several times a year and who are actively involved in setting up their own scholarship program their class has produced this year s alumnus of the year ed st john i think of charlie gilbert 70 and his cohorts on the alumni board who work behind the scenes to keep as many alums as possible involved in the life of our school this alumni support which is nurtured by our development office staff makes us such a better school as we learn from their wisdom and challenge them to help us improve what we do i reserve my last bit of thanks in this letter for your sons especially the men of 2012 who have been with us this year i think in no small measure they have been a support system for us like no other they command our attention in so many ways but this year they displayed a sensitivity to the needs of the entire community that was special indeed they certainly cried a bit with us and grieved with us but they also helped us to poke fun at ourselves when we needed it most they carried us on their shoulders bolstering us up helping us to see the light when it seemed so dark for us and they remain for us a source of great strength and even greater hope at graduation this year the men of 2012 and their alumni brothers in attendance joined me in welcoming george andrews as our new president as kevin breitenother 13 and charlie gilbert 70 placed brother james academic hood on him signaling the new era about to begin for the mount have a wonderful summer pray for us and pray for the men of 2012 peace barryj.fitzpatrick principal

mr david norton director of studies changes to class schedules can be made during the summer either by telephone or by e-mail all requests must have parental permission please contact mr dave norton 410-646-6222 books for the new school year books for the 20122013 school year can be purchased through mbs direct prior to the start of classes books can be bought online by accessing www.mbsdirect.net available beginning july 16 gym uniforms locks and polo shirts will be available in the bookstore throughout the summer check the website for specific summer hours school information will be mailed in early august included in this mailing will be student transcript sophomores juniors seniors the student emergency information sheet list of classes guidance counselor and homeroom final schedules parents and students will be asked to check the accuracy of the transcript gpa courses grades etc all demographic information should also be updated any errors or changes must be reported to the studies office the student emergency information sheet must be completed/revised by parents and returned to the studies office the student handbook consent form is part of the student planner page 1 this form must be signed by parents to acknowledge that they have read and understand the student regulations at the mount this form must also be returned by students to their homeroom teacher at the beginning of the school year freshmen will receive their student planners during orientation days in august the remainder of the students will receive their planners on the first day of school id pictures freshmen will have their id pictures taken on wednesday august 22 during their orientation session the remainder of students will have their picture taken on tuesday august 28 wednesday august 29 and thursday physical exams all students must have a new physical for the 2012 ­ 2013 school year before they will be allowed to try out for a fall sport it s not too early to make an appointment for your son s sports physical if you are not able to get an appointment with your son s doctor or your insurance does not cover a physical every year kernan sports medicine will once again be offering sports physicals during the summer the cost is $30.00 on the following dates and locations sunday july 22 8:00 a.m 12:30 p.m central maryland rehabilitation in columbia athletes must register by july 18 sunday august 5 8:00 a.m 12:30 p.m university of maryland orthopedic associates in columbia athletes must register by august 1 please call 410-298-0990 ext 15 to set up an appointment no walk-ins will be accepted the cost is $30.00 per athlete for completion of the kernan sports medicine physical form there is a $5.00 fee for each additional form.
