during september the librarian visited each study hall to introduce herself to students and give students expectations in the new learning commons model the librarian also visited with each grade level team to share the vision of the library and garner input students interested in technology were invited each thursday to tech ninjas to discover and learn together new technologies these technologies included google docs website creators avatar creators students could then use these skills within projects during classes and their own projects website wednesdays began at the request of students interested in learning how to create websites each wednesday the librarian led students in a mini-lessons on website creation students in grades 6-8 were invited to apply to become library helpers these students helped in the library with shelving checking books in and out helping fellow students locate books setting up the book fair and numerous other tasks students loved participating and they were a great help in helping to maintain the level of service with the reduction in staff during december students were invited to come to the library learning commons for the book fair the money raised during this book fair was used to supplement the book swap later in the year there was a second book fair buy one get one free during the first week in june in order to support summer reading.

each month grades 4 5 had a booktalk with the librarian the librarian worked with each teacher to tailor the booktalks to include books at the students levels as well as related to content taught in the classroom during that month grades 6-8 also participated in booktalks throughout the year this gave the librarian time to show students new and upcoming books during the last two weeks of june the librarian gave summer reading booktalks for all students in grades 4-8 it was the hope of the librarian to encourage students to read over the summer and along with the book swap gave students a book to read one june 8th 2012 gordon korman came to solvay middle school via skype mr korman is a prolific author who has written over seventy novels he writes novels at multiple levels and each student read at least one book by him prior to the author skype students were very receptive to the skype and several mentioned that they liked it even better than expected mr korman spent over half of the skype answering question the students asked it was both relevant and extraordinary to see the rapt attention of the students.
