senior school news the spirit of new zealand a personal perspective from the 27th may to the 6th june i volunteered as crew aboard the spirit of new zealand this was my second trip as a leading hand after my first trip as a trainee which i was able to get through school in 2010 as a leading hand i was another link between the trainees and permanent crew i spent most of my time on deck or in the rigging as pictured i also helped the cook down in the galley there was always good food throughout the voyage during the 10 day trip we sailed out to great barrier island the weather was great apart from a few days of rain which did not last long some of the organised activities included a day tramp dingy sailing yard swing and a bbq on the beach plus lots of sailing each activity made the group closer and improved their skills later on in the trip we sailed back over to coromandel while heading along the coast we met a large pod of dolphins which played around the ship for at least 45 minutes the last day of the trip is called trainee day the trainees elect their own crew and run the ship for the day using all of the skills taught to them they can do whatever they want to do and we stand back and supervise their activities where necessary especially up the rigging it is always interesting to see what each group does after three voyages i have learned lots of new skills and i discovered how i have changed after each voyage i am going to continue to volunteer with the trust in the future as each trip you go on is always different i always recommend to others to try and get a place aboard the spirit places come up through school regularly so it is good to keep an eye out tom arnold year 13 year 13 servant leadership all the year 13 students on the 21st june were involved in community projects and activities that provided an opportunity to support a range of organisations and groups in the community this involved helping young at risk youths support working at hohepa planting trees at hawkes bay hospital and making fences near the karamu stream this initiative started last year and has been very well received by the local community and provides a great vehicle for the spirit of volunteer work in the community to be instilled in our young men fergus wares planting native trees at roys hill on behalf of the hastings district council in the 2011 senior service day senior assessment week and senior reports teachers are conducting practice assessments in ncea classes for those standards that your sons will complete in the november examinations run by nzqa these standards will be repeated in the benchmark examinations in the middle of next term where a more complete picture will be gained there is no doubt that some of the results have been very pleasing and there is real evidence of progress being made for others this has been a timely reminder of the fact that nothing is gained without the sustained and on-going diligence and persistence that is characteristic of all high achievers whatever their baseline level of ability reports from staff are being completed in the last weeks of term and these will give a full outline of your son s performance department of labour seminar for year 12 and 13 students an increasing number of senior students are holding down jobs either on a permanent part time basis or during the holidays the reasons for this are many but it seems appropriate that we try to help them understand their in workplace rights and responsibilities as an employee we were fortunate to secure maree wheatley a mediator from the department of labour to talk to the boys to give them some insights to their individual contractual rights the new 90 day legislation and some of its implications for them the youth minimum wage levels and legislation and their rights and responsibilities around workplace holidays dismissal and pay negotiation many of the boys were unaware of the issues in this important area of their future employment and it is certain that their experiences will be different to those of our own as young adults mr ross barry assistant rector senior school 4

from the chaplain congratulations to this year s prefects on their planning and organisation of last weekend s ball it was clearly an evening that was enjoyed by most and seen as the social highlight of the school year it seems to me to be wonderful that amidst all the busyness and demands of the school year we can take time out to simply enjoy ourselves one thing i observed from the evening was the obvious sense of pride that both the boys and their partners had in dressing formally for the occasion with this also reflected in the way the majority conducted themselves during the evening in scripture pride or being proud tends to be viewed unfavourably in fact the book of proverbs is particularly scathing of pride when pride comes then comes disgrace pride goes before destruction a person s pride will bring humiliation to keep these words in their proper context the writer of proverbs was addressing the people of his day and their relationship with god for them the one and only reality one should have had a sense of pride in was god for it was by god s grace alone and not their own ability that allowed them to remain faithful to place pride in a more contemporary context to have a sense of pride in who we are and in what we are doing obviously has a positive connotation pride allows us to achieve at an ever higher level it allows us to aspire to attain goals that otherwise would be beyond our ability to reach and it allows others to gain a positive view of who we are and of the community to which we belong in this case our school community this sense of pride should not be confined to one night of the year it should be something that flows through into the daily life of our school we should have a sense of pride in being lindisfarne college students and staff we should wear our uniform with pride take pride in the standards and values that make our school community unique and take this sense of pride with us out into the wider community the words of our school prayer express it well god our heavenly father grant your blessing on our school give to us the true love of knowledge and so guide our work and games our clubs and societies that we may take home and into the community that ideal of service which you give us in your son jesus christ our lord amen may it be so thanks to those families who responded to the invitation for baptism profession of faith or confirmation although the deadline has passed i would still be happy to hear from others the actual service is set for sunday 22 july 2012 with the july school holidays approaching i would ask parents of students who have registered for the duke of edinburgh s hillary award to encourage their sons to take the opportunity of accumulating some hours towards their service component as this is often the more difficult area to fulfil especially for boarders with the shortest day approaching leaves all gone and buds signifying the promise of new life to come may this anticipation be evident in the way we live out our lives and experience god working in and through us every blessing rev warren fortune chaplain year 7 8 news wellesley/hibs exchange -the intermediate boys had a very enjoyable yet chilly visit to wellington for sports recently on wednesday 16th may the boys arrived at wellesley to discover a severe southerly accompanied by rain blowing onto the sports fields it was no surprise that we failed to cope with the conditions after a long bus ride from hawkes bay and we lost all three games the closest game was the hockey which lost 3 1 at fraser park in avalon to a wellesley team that was skilled and handled the cold conditions well oliver howlett starred in goal by making some outstanding saves to keep lindisfarne in the game the rugby was played in extremely muddy conditions and the soccer was played at a seaside venue in absolutely freezing conditions both these teams had periods where they fought with tenacity however the locals ultimately had too much possession and earned good victories for wellesley hutt international boys school billeted our boys on wednesday evening and the next day hosted games including using the middle of trentham racecourse as a venue our boys found hibs tough opposition as well and although the conditions were better our teams all lost to stronger opponents captains josh combs rugby callum walker football and liam watson hockey all spoke well at the functions held after to say thanks hibs were presented with the karika family trophy presented by the karika family in 2010 for winning the excahnge between the schools and we all look forward to resuming our battle with them here at home in 2013 kirk doyle head of year 7-8 6

middle school news the second term has been very busy for the students academically particularly with the completion of the midterm examinations it was however the time spent on study skills that will be crucial to students relative success along with effective time management in terms of contributions at home in preparation for examinations it would be worth noting the following on average we remember · 20 of what we read · 30 of what we hear · 40 of what we see · 50 of what we say · 60 of what we do · 90 of what we see hear say and do so the main fact from a parental point of view when asking your son what they are doing regarding study for examinations it is important that just simply reading is not enough to be most helpful involve yourself in the study programme by making up tests that could be asked getting your son to verbalise answers help develop a study timetable and help develop the memory techniques such as using thinking maps or mnemonics the key is that at some stage your son will need to commit information into long term memory and the more they process information the more they will retain below are some useful websites www.studyit.org.nz www.how-to-study.com www.thinkingmaps.com www.mind-map.com at present the year nine students are going through a ten hour service programme as a college community we pride ourselves on our christian dimension and as a college we place a lot of importance on developing `good men part of developing the notion of a good man is to develop empathetic contributing members of society and this in part is achieved by having the year nine students organise their own service programme where the students are prepared to go out of their comfort zone and help those groups or associations who are primarily voluntary organisations it is hoped that your son is a good way through the ten hour service programme and if not the upcoming holidays would be a good opportunity to complete their service as part of the service programme each student is to complete a booklet that outlines what it is they have done more importantly it gives the student the opportunity to reflect on what they learnt from the experience once the booklets have been signed off and completed they are to be handed in to mr barry musson in regard to service the year ten leaders have linked up with the college prefects along with a member of the senior management group smg and from a roster each lunch hour walking around the school ensuring the lindisfarne community is litter free as a group of leaders the belief is that it is essential that every individual adds value to themselves their peers and the college community one spin off from working with the prefects and smg is that an opportunity has been provided to further strengthen relationships between seniors juniors and smg · · · · · other year 10 initiatives developing habits of mind posters developing a media site peer support with new year 7 or 8 students helping staff coach intermediate school teams being proactive in dealing with issues in the more informal times at school such as lunch time as the term closes your sons teachers are in the process of writing reports for the first half of the year these are due to be sent out early term three mr george rogers acting assistant rector middle school above are examples of thinking strategies 7

escargot k up a treat of boys coo year 9 students french class snails anyone international a group of year 9 students cooked les escargot and le pain au chocolat during french class les escargots were delicious cooked in parsley butter and garlic and le pain au chocolat were not quite the true thing but delicious all the same mrs m campbell usa student lindisfarne exchange over the course of my first week here in hawke s bay i have learned a lot about what it means to be a new zealander the national pride that kiwis share is evident in every aspect of the nation from sheep to rugby after the 52 hour journey to napier cancellations in dallas left us stranded in the airport for eighteen hours and postponed our arrival by a day john and i turned up in nz groggy and sleep deprived but nonetheless we kicked off our journey with the ball immediately the differences between our cultures were clear the accents were different and the slang made it difficult to understand my peers but after one week i find myself using nz phraseology that i would never use in the states eg mean keen grab a feed and especially reckon i have never really used that word before coming here and now i use it three or four times a conversation without thinking about it lindisfarne college is quite similar to mba my school in nashville with the exception of uniform and chapel the college shares the same ideals and several of the same traditions as my school and everyone has been extremely welcoming l am grateful for the opportunity to come here and experience this great nation and school thanks to the kirk family for letting me into their home and thank you to all of the boys and faculty at lindisfarne alex floyd starting around noon on wednesday june the 6th i started out of nashville tn with the assumption of arriving in napier new zealand around 9am local time friday morning unfortunately we spent basically an entire day trying to redirect cancelled flights argue with airline personnel and negotiate our way onto flights from one city to the next with the hope of finally getting to our destination which seemed so unreachable finally a day late we stepped off the plane into beautiful napier new zealand it was saturday morning and i had not seen a bed since tuesday night the nicolle s took me straight to their house where i have been blessed to be staying during my time here the new zealand lifestyle certainly differs from that which i am used to in america but it carries similarities as well the strong family bond shared among the nicolle house has been a blessing for me to experience new zealand schools appear quite different with almost all of them having very strict uniforms as well as very few co-ed schools being a boarding school primarily lindisfarne has a different feel from iba and the camaraderie shown by the boys here is easily understood although the classes and style of teaching may differ from our school to yours the sense of pride and love is very apparent and assures me that i am truly at a great place outside of school it has been amazing for us to have already been able to see wellington and some of the maori cultural art although the slang has taken a while to get accustomed to alex and i have been very blessed with this great opportunity and we look forward to experiencing the new zealand culture over the next 3 weeks john d powell 13
