it is my goal to help children with learning disabilities because all my life i have lived with one as a special education teacher i would like to help children that are struggling academically and emotionally because i know how difficult being a student can be when you haven t been receiving the assistance you require to help you excel and enjoy being a part of the classroom environment back to table of contents my teaching philosophy click here to see my power point presentation on the state of special education i believe that education is the key to a healthy positive and successful life as a teacher i believe that to be a great teacher is to be caring knowledgeable and encouraging there are no limits to what one can achieve when provided a proper direction as well as a safe nurturing environment education is a gift of knowledge that can never be taken away from you it is my firm belief that the more you know the more places you go my classroom is a safe nurturing and conducive learning environment i agree with nell nodding s philosophy in regards to education and that caring refers to the relationship between student and teacher not just the person who cares as educators we respond to the needs of students as teachers we need to utilize differentiated instruction because as we work day to day with students we are moved by their different needs and interests the claim to care must not be based on a one time virtuous decision but an ongoing interest in the student s welfare i also agree with the philosophy of cornell west a modern day philosopher who believes that the ideally educated person is someone that is a prophetic thinker final project janene rivera page 3

he encourages people to have faith and never abandon hope no matter how discouraged you feel or how hopeless things many seem it is the enduring faith that of the prophetic thinker that can make a positive difference in our lives as well as the lives of others a prophetic thinker is someone who lives in and understands multiple realities and uses this understanding to build bridges between and among the varied worlds this person is not without their own flaws i agree with west s belief that by examining our successes and failures as well as the circumstances that caused their outcome we can become better educated in the future i have implemented these philosophies in my teaching style and continue to seek new concepts material and teaching strategies better educate myself as well as my students i believe that differentiated instruction and classroom management are key factors in providing students with the optimal learning environment back to table of contents final project janene rivera page 4

my science lesson see me teach science and review my lesson plan click here to watch the video of my science experiment my science lesson page illustrates the reaction that occurs when the candy mentos is added to a bottle of diet coke and a bottle of orange soda this activity should be done outside away from the building and away from other people this is an activity because the students are not testing a question they are just making observations step 1 carefully open the bottle of soda and place the bottle on the ground or on a table where it will not tip over step 2 open the whole roll of mentos make a hole in the mentos with a toothpick and add on a second mentos the trick is to have the entire stick of mentos drop into the bottle of soda at the same time step 3 ask student to make a prediction about what they think will happen when the mentos drop into the container of soda step 4 students should record their predictions in their science notebook have students share their predictions with a partner back to table of contents final project janene rivera page 12

step 5 warn the spectators to stand back drop the mentos into the container and back away quickly step 6 have students record their observations students should share their observations with their team mates 6 think-pair-share ask students to record questions that they might have based on what they just observed and what they think might have caused the blast after sharing tell students that they will look at ways to answer those questions in the next lesson elaborate design an experiment to test how different variables affect the eruption of soda teachers will guide students to design their own experiment to test what affects the eruption this experiment can be completed by the entire class or in small groups think-pair-share using the 4-question design sheet have students think about question one and record responses after one minute have students pair with their shoulder partner and rally robin to compare and add answers then allow students share answers with the class some ideas that students might generate based on changing the materials included different brands or types of soda diet vs regular diet soda with aspartame or splenda amount of soda caffeine or decaf size of bottle type of mentos mint matte finish or fruit-flavored glaze finish whole mentos vs crushed mentos more surface area number of mentos new mentos vs used mentos sand off mentos coating will the naked mentos have the same effect if the sanded coating is dropped into the bottle will it still cause an eruption back to table of contents final project janene rivera page 13
