parts of a plant lesson overview in this lesson students will learn about the different parts of a plant teacher will read aloud a book on the parts of a plant teacher will have a diagram of the plant labeled on the smart board the class will go on a field trip to home depot and observe plants in their nursery the students will purchase their own plants and will plant it in a garden as a class as a hands on activity author shari mohan subject science grade level 1st lesson description for day 1 students will learn about the parts of a plant through a read aloud and visual aid lesson description for day 2 students will go on a field trip to home depot s nursery and purchase a plant students will listen and observe the teacher as she explains the different parts of the plant and their function as she plants the plant in the garden they will also learn what the plant needs in order to survive students will be able to plant their own plant and discover the importance of the plants necessities students will be able to do an art project as a hands on activity to recall the parts of the plants and will write about its function common core standards standard 1 analysis inquiry and design standard 2 information systems standard 4 science basic life cycles of the butterfly frog and seeds plants · plants ­ identify the parts of a plant and how they work together

goals students will observe and describe parts of a plant students will explain the function of each part of the plant students will explain what the plant needs to survive method share lesson goals and objectives with students that they will learn about the different parts of a plant visual identifies each part of a plant and explain its function lead class in a discussion on the lesson topic ask students to tell you what they know about the different parts of a plant what would happen if one of those parts didn t function properly or was missing draw a picture of a plant and label it s parts in their journal introduce and model new knowledge present students with new information appropriate to the lesson highlighting the different parts of a plant and their function in the life cycle of that plant -use images to illustrate the parts of the plant -use an actual plant the children can see and touch from our field trip each student will have their own plant to observe and plant in the garden they will discuss the plant with each other and use it to help them draw a picture in their journals provide guided practice students will read about parts of a plant in their science books and fill in a worksheet lesson activities -the teacher will read parts of a plant by wiley blevins using the document camera so all students may look at the photos diagrams and text the students will listen question and respond to the text showing understanding of the function of each plant part.

-the teacher will show a plant diagram labeled on the smart board so students may see the parts of the plant the teacher will point to a plant part and ask the following questions a what part of the plant am i pointing to b what is the function of this part of the plant c call a student to place a label on that part of the plant -the teacher will continue this process for each part of the plant roots stem leaves and flower this will be repeated as an informal assessment in the garden art activity students will take a white piece of construction paper and fold it in half vertically they will cut three equal size squares on one half of the paper students will then fold the paper in half again while holding the paper like a book they will label each section flower stem leaves and roots on the inside of the square they will write the function of each part on the opposite side they will draw the part of the plant when all the sections are opened at once a plant with all its parts should be revealed.
