academics grades 7 to 10 our academic program for grades 7 to 10 integrates content instruction with english language acquisition which is possible due to our extended instructional classroom time we start with the ontario ministry of education course objectivesandenrichthemwithlanguagespecificlearning this allows our international students to learn through grade appropriate curriculum while continuing to improve and learn english language skills in preparation for future senior school studies at their next boarding school students study in small classes of 6-12 students and are taughtbyourhighlytrainedteachers,whoareeslcertified and members of the ontario college of teachers students receive the necessary support and attention in our state of the art learning environment the use of technology helps us in facilitating differentiated instruction in our multilevelandvariedlanguageproficiencyclassrooms our goal includes both providing solid instruction in gradelevel subject content and the effective development of englishlanguageproficiency the fulford academy curriculum follows the guidelines set out by the ontario ministry of education students choose courses that are suited to their strengths interests and goals i got to enjoy an extraordinary academic environment with excellent staff truly international character and still a wonderful family atmosphere stefanie pies germany 2 fulford academy

the ontario secondary school diploma to graduate from an ontario high school a student must earn an ontario secondary school diploma ossd which requires a minimum of 30 credits including 18 compulsory credits and 12 optional credits a credit is granted when a course of at least 110 hours is completed with success at fulford academy we offer grade 9 and 10 credits which contribute to the courses needed to complete the ontario secondary school diploma are transferred to the next secondary school as part of the requirement students must pass the ontario secondary school literacy test if students have been unsuccessful in writing the test then they may be eligible to take the ontario secondary school literacy course olc4o which can be completed at fulford academy depending on student demand students also need to complete 40 hours of community involvement activity during their studies in the province of ontario everyday of hard work nurtured me for my intellectual curiosity tanat ratanakosum thailand fulford academy 5

esl foundation we prepare our students for their next step esl foundation program is a unique preparation program for english second language esl students aged 11 to 17 this program prepares them linguistically academically and culturally for the demands of the canadian educational environment students enroll in this program for one full year with the purpose of transferring into our academic program after completing at least a year in our academic program students are then well prepared to continue their studies at any of the top boarding schools in canada and the usa at fulford academy learning goes beyond the functional english syllabus typical of language schools to address the full scope of classroom contexts and learning processes our program embraces a content-rich high-standards curriculum through which we prepare esl students to become academically successful in their future learning as well as familiar with the north american culture and social expectations students in our program acquire strong skills in vocabulary acquisition reading comprehension listening writing and pronunciation through studies centered on math social studies and english literature students practice their english language skills and learn more about the culture through projects and activities in class as well as through our student life program my experiences at fulford academy helped me to make my first steps in canada and made me feel confident and secure ilya rodionov russia 6 fulford academy

toefl/ssat prep toefl and ssat preparation classes are offered upon request to groups of students on saturday mornings as an extra class this preparation is conducted in a form of a regular class and is taught by one of ourqualifiedteachers fulford academy 7

summer school intensive preparation our summer school is very different from the typical summer camp programs it is designed for international students who have already received a letter of acceptance to a boarding school for september for students applying to our academic grade 7-10 or for students considering a boarding experience in the future during our intensive summer school students follow a typical daily boarding school schedule in order to quickly adapt academically linguistically and culturally into boarding schoolroutines,thus,gainingtheconfidencetosucceedin anenglishfirstlanguageenvironment the curriculum and structure of the program follow our esl foundation program where english language acquisition and content learning are integrated theeveningsandweekendsarefilledwithrichandexciting student life program which introduces students to the life in a boarding school and to the canadian culture and society programs based on language level and needs students have a choice between being placed in either esl preparation or our academic credit program where students can work towards completing the following courses » grade 9 or 10 math » grade 9 or 10 science » esl bo and co » ontario secondary school literacy course olc4o our summer course offerings are based on student requests and needs for their next school s application a minimum of fivestudentsisrequiredforeachclass in order to receive the credits students must complete the 7-week program to meet the ontario ministry of education requirements of 110 credit hours per course 8 fulford academy

life at fulford academy ourresidentiallifeprogramreflectsthelifeinatraditional boarding school with a focus on immersing the students in north american culture and the rules and regulations of a typical boarding school fulford academy is like one big family we are small by design with a limited enrollment of fewer than 60 students this allows us to offer a safe nurturing and attentive environment to support students and ensure that students take full advantage of our english immersion environment the concept of an english-only rule is crucial to our immersion environment it helps students understand the importance of working and living in the english language our staff members are provided with the time necessary to provide the personal attention and care that each student needsinordertogainconfidencewiththeenglishlanguage designated staff members are on the premises 24 hours a day and take on a parenting role with our students less than two weeks later i could feel that i was becoming a part of the fulford community i couldn t imagine who i would become without the year at fulford annie chen china fulford academy 13
