page 5 a madison minute with our unfortunate limitations with respect to ch oice in decor many avid s.i.d designers were left with no choice but to employ the use of the many fantastic patterns popping up all over the various sim3 download sites but how does one go about using these patterns and not make a muck of it all here are a few pointers the beauty of pattern is that you can combine as m any as you want checks stripes floral spots the only thing to remember is to limit the colors usually no more than three in my op inion it makes for a nice round number once you ve gone about choosing your pattern types its then on to color how do you coordinate those patterns you can go with one main colour that way you are sure that your room will be co-ordinated but don t go putting blue everywhere on the floors ceiling and furniture instead use darker and ligh ter tones of your chosen colour that way you ll create variety in the scheme but still know it s co-ordinated another method would be to employ the use of contrasting colours this method often delivers fantas tic results as well but may require a little more work the use of a colour wheel would be handy with that in mind the possibilities becom e endless and for the more squimish designers if you are a fraid of using a lot of patterns then pick patterned accessories instea d to a little oumpf to a room a little burst of color don t neglect your sims painted creations you can get great environmental bonuses from your sim s personal paintings the sims3 game collectors guide tip s from gra n n y tips from granny how to save your unique siggy allium has been so generous is making us unique siggys and the question has been asked how do you save your siggy 1 right click on the siggy image and save to your computer desktop is fine and easy 2 you need to upload your siggy image to the internet and the easiest way to do that is to go to www.tinypic.com there you can choose your pic file and upload it you will get a unique .jpg link which you can copy by either pasting onto otepage or by right clicking copy 3 ow click on the members hot link up under our banner on any window 4 on your personal member s page click on edit profile 5 in the signature toolbar click on the framed picture and a box will pop up where you now enter the internet address of your saved siggy jpg 6 click ok and your new siggy is now live all of your previous siggys on the web site are now replaced by the new siggy got a question for granny i might just have the answer!

volume 1 issue 2 page 6 thoroughly modern modern living room by madison one of the greatest advantages of using modern or contemporary home décor when decorating a home for your sims is that it is a matter of personal preference there are so many definitions of modern and so many styles to choose from that decorating can take you in many directions you will need to decide exactly what suits your sims needs and what economic level the sims that live there will be in the real world home décor manufacturers produce lots of what some consider disposable décor some of that same décor can be found in the sims3 if you are modeling your sim or sim family as a young adult just starting out or a couple of newlyweds then this style of disposable décor would be perfect for their needs ot all contemporary home décor is disposable much of it is constructed with excellent craftsmanship design and quality and will last a very long time this type can also be found in the sims3 so for your more established sims this would be the route to take another great advantage with modern décor is that there are many styles of furniture that are considered modern so before approaching the first rooms you plan to decorate decide which is the most visually appealing to the style of the interior modern design gives you the advantage of selecting anything from an asian theme to french or italian or if you prefer an american flair with all these advantages no wonder modern furniture and décor is a favorite with many decorators when creating lots think about where your sims will spend time together being social is an important part of the sim experience the sims3 game collectors guide old is new again landscaping tips are your gardens drab and boring eed to add a little something to make your home really stand out try some of these landscaping tips many of them were used in the sims2 but now in the sims3 there are far fewer limitations to your imagination we no longer have to worry about the gardeners standing there ready to wet themselves because they can t reach that one plant that needs weeding we can use moveobjects on and stack our plants on top of each other to create different styles or color schemes of plants we can use terrain textures to create rock paths around the grounds and add variety to the garden we can add ponds and bridges we can adjust the level of the terrain to create interesting visuals we can even put little fencing around our flowerbeds we can place trees or other plants in the middle of our swimming pools if we like we can even bring outdoor plants inside to bring your outdoor plants inside make sure to not place the roof of the home until the plants are inside mix up your trees it s more interesting to see a mix of tree types and sizes on a lot than every tree the same use a mixture of flowers at ground level as well this will add some texture to the grounds remember the grounds are just as critical to the beauty of your home as the home itself using lots of plant life on the grounds really will make your house stand out pink s perspective hi all okay first of all i would like to thank okadoka for coming up with such great ideas for this newsletter secondly i would just like to thank allium for all the effort she has put into the new site header and the sig banners for everyone i think they are beautiful and i ll say again how professional i think they make the site look right i m currently in the process of trying to build us a new builders page because i think we have just as many builders as designers and their work needs to be seen got a few other ideas in the pipeline for the site which i wont mention as i m not sure if i can make them happen yet finally thank you to all our new and our existing members for keeping us here love you all pink x x ocean views villa by okuniba show a great example of plant layering.

page 7 the 2009 color decorating trends are mimicking the fashion trends for this year color is again the big story with it being big and vibrant yellow purple sea blue-greens grays and metallic s are storming rooms and creating an optimistic feel this is the feel you want to go for when the economy is on the down side the bright sizzling tones are muted with neutrals to give them more mass appeal as well as a feeling of sophistication mix in one or two of this year s trends fur faux or real shearling heavy distressed wood eco-friendly vinyls textured linens and soft magazine photo burnished leather to cozy up your sims home in an instant color whether bold or monochromes can really bring a room to life try accenting your rooms by using color combos that are usually not expected recreated in sims3 by allium current color trends it seems the color orange is becoming a trendy thing in home interior décor about 4 months ago my daughter asked if she could have her room painted orange of all colors it happens to be her favorite color i tried to convince her to go with yellow or something paler however when the mind of a teenage girl is made up there is absolutely no changing it her room is painted a bright orange with white woodwork she chose her new bedding and draperies and they are orange and teal i have to admit the result came out much better than i expected in the last 4 months though i have noticed orange everywhere in many television commercials magazine ads television shows i have noticed orange as the wall color one of the trendy shops at our mall has redone their entire main level in shades of orange and pink is it a trend or a passing fad you decide my daughters room recreated in the sims3.

volume 1 issue 2 page 8 a stroll down builders boulevard it was only a matter of time after the launch of ts3 before groups splintered off to form their own websites and communities builders boulevard is one of those groups serving as a haven for the building community the group is utilizing yahoo groups and has recently launched their own official website at www.buildersboulevard.com a less hectic place for builders and creators to converse send private messages share ideas and building tutorials collaborate on neighborhoods and show off their builds created by addict1220 host of the weekly build-n-share challenges stickied on the creative corner forums by anjubee builders boulevard is steadily growing in membership with new build-n-share participants joining in each week the original yahoo group has reached almost 200 members while the official website is steadily climbing with almost 100 members after just launching a little over two weeks ago with one successful neighborhood project gnomelandia under their belt members are currently finishing up their second neighborhood summer of love and have future neighborhoods planned and in the works feel free to stop on by and join the fun editors note builders boulevard has also joined us as a friend site our site is almost one hundred members strong now just who will be our 100th member creating great roofs roof photos from www.siminteriorsdesigns com photo gallery for builders who want to create a home with an interesting curb appeal one of the things they can do is design a fabulous looking roof seasoned builders are good at this novice builders often feel intimidated by trying something different with their roofs often they just go ahead and use the auto roofs in the game the effect of auto roofs is not always the most aesthetically pleasing way to go there are many tutorials on the web that can help you achieve the style of roof you are looking for creating basic roofs with different slope angles can be tricky with the build tools in sims3 but they are much more reliable than in sims2 i came across this great tutorial by feldynn at modthesims the tutorial can be found here http www.modthesims.info showthread.php?t=344816 this tutorial makes the process much easier to do and understand have fun with it and happy building!

page 9 member spotlight on gissence sid s first member spotlight feature is focused on a sim builder who goes by gissence gissence originally started playing sims when he bought sims 2 for his daughter however while she lost interest in the game gissence did not he continued to hone his virtual home building skills when the third edition of sims was released early last june and all can agree that his work is truly an art gissence s sims 3 lot dandywine college is the sixth most downloaded lot for sims 3 on tsr with 3,322 downloads the eighteen lots that gissence has uploaded to tsr have been downloaded at total of 7,892 times one thing that is for sure is that gissence s love of nature is evident not only in his answer to the first question but also in his work as each is beautifully landscaped gissence clearly uses all four of the elements of his creative process passion persistence talent and technique lots of such magnificence could not be created otherwise i recently had the chance to interview gissence i would like to share this interview with you i think we can learn much about the creative process from his responses enjoy oka besides building homes in the sims3 what other personal hobbies and interests do you have gissence first and foremost without sounding obnoxious about it i would like to say that i deliberately live the christian faith and am actively involved in a local community of like-minded believers it s a thing that exists on a much deeper level than a hobby or interest and for that reason i probably shouldn t even be including it in this answer but there it is under that paradigm i enjoy a varied collection of interests besides sim building that includes the following cooking for large groups we re talking 100 raising bonsai playing the celtic whistle and listening to celtic music dougie macclean loreena mckennitt nightnoise and william jackson are among my favorites creek walking landscape painting with artist oils and teaching the bible oka how difficult is it to work with the technology in the sims3 compared to the sims2 gissence i think i quickly adapted to the s3 building tools immediately after installation i began a tire kicking session that evolved about a week later into dandywine college i ran into the usual snags trying to do it the s2 way but started to quickly fall in love with the new way the cfe cheat worked in particular the way it dealt with stairs on split level foundations i can t imagine being able to pull off the entrance staircase in s2 and yet i feel in no way that i have tamed the cfe tiger i m still fighting the over sensitive terrain and the ghost ceilings but who isn t we all have confidence that they will be dealt with on ea s end oka when you get an idea for a build do you study tutorials or improvise on your own gissence:this time last year i was inhaling tutorials on the sims resource as far as visual referencing for building ideas i ve just recently turned to plan books four out of seven of my builds on tsr were close duplicates from a floor plan book all my s2 lots and dandywine came out of thin air.

volume 1 issue 2 page 10 oka how many attempts does it normally take before the build feels like you got it just right gissence i either work it through from the first attempt or i flush it completely which has rarely happened sometimes when it s done i come back after not looking at it for a bit and make a couple of adjustments many times i do complete re-colors oka which build do you consider your favorite and why gissence the one i m working on whenever you ask me that question for this very philosophical reason to me the act of creating is more about the process than the product i feel the goose bumps when i m producing not when i m looking at the finished product oka which if any question did i not ask you that you wish i would have gissence perhaps this question would be any advice or thoughts you would like to share since you asked i d be happy to share a few things call it a word about perspective the creative process consists of four dynamics which correspond to the four dimensions of the human experience they stack up like this a passion spiritual b persistence emotional c talent physical d technique intellectual there are many more talented people on this planet than we realize most of them go nowhere because they think success comes through the last two the visible fruit but the unseen root is where all living things and acts of creation come forth the process holds true whether you re gardening relationship building sim building or anything else under the sun the problem comes when the thrill wears off and we start believing the voices that are saying we aren t as good as the next guy we don t muster the strength to press on mediocrity and failure then become inevitable as a man thinks in his heart so is he says proverbs so guard that innocent pathos you first felt and don t complicate it find the tenacity to keep building despite the voices i deal with them all the time they never go away cultivate the root and i ll guarantee you people will eventually notice some of gissence s build available for download at the sims resource please visit his page and show your support http www.thesimsresource.com/artists/gissence

page 12 after tackling such a broad subject last article i decided to go into a bit more detail about one particular subject living room design now before i start i just want you to know that these are merely guidelines to help you along should the need occur they are in no way mandatory or even necessary after all isn t that the beauty of simdesign no need to follow the rules with that said we shall now proceed when designing a living room it is very important to know how the room is going to be used what type of activities do we intend to carry out in it are conversation areas necessary should the furniture be angled towards a focal point for example a tv once you have decided on those points then it is off to furniture placement try different things and listen to your room what is she telling you if she is not speaking as loudly as you would wish that day here are a few things you could consider room 1 create conversation areas your sims should not have to shout at each other or twist to speak with one another when in the room 2 decide on a focal point whether it be the 42 inch plasma tv on the wall or the warm fireplace with the marble mantle once you ve decided arrange your furniture around it 3 think of traffic no need getting that short tempered sim of yours frustrated by blocking his way just so you can have that pretty pretty room it all has to be usable after all create 4 remember that items need not be pushed against the walls in fact if any thing else pull them away this way you can create more intimate areas space permitting of course 5 if you have a very large divide and conquer go ahead and separate your area perhaps a small reading area or simply more seating areas for guests of course and don t forget to accessorize game play tip moving into a beachfront lot has the extra benefit of giving your sims the beautiful vista moodlet which is a major happiness bonus the sims3 game collectors guide tips from granny on judging the haunted house competition what a tough competition they were all great of course they are all winners but i thought i would comment on each house anyway lol madmad-ium manor great overall look of the theme to their lot with excellent landscaping and buildings love the bridge to the mountain home the distressed furniture is top notch and they used decor appropriately winterhaven manor i love all the original patterns used very nice good landscaping throughout added ghosts and even a buglar nice touch i also notice the elevated chairs in the dining room very well done haunted dreams again very clever interiors and the house is well built the landscaping is very nice and appropriate to the theme the ghosts are a nice addition and they put together a nice pictorial very well done congratulations to our first house competition winners needless to say all three were so much fun to view and the talent exhibited to exhibited was truly remarkable i personally loved the scary interiors with all the distressed wall coverings and furniture and ghosts too plus a burglar very fun the landscaping jobs were absolutely awesome very very nice job ladies maybe next time a few of the guys will join in or perhaps they are just too scared lol so without further ado stand up and give a rousing round of applause to allium and madison team madium for their entry madmad-ium manor got a question for granny i might just have the answer!
