l arte dei guarnieri un intrigante mélange di astrazione e figurazione the art of the guarnieri an intriguing mixture of the abstract and the figurative sono ignudo da michelangelo 2010 cm 110 x 80 affresco su tavola 9 trascorsi esattamente dieci anni da quando ho incontrato per la prima volta roberto e rodolfo guarnieri nella loro bottega fiorentina di lungarno cellini non ricordo per quali vie ci siamo conosciuti ma rammento nitidamente la visita nel suggestivo laboratorio dove si respirava un aria fuori dal tempo nel corso di quell incontro mi raccontarono la storia della ditta e il lavoro che vi si svolgeva dal 1944 quando stavo per andarmene quasi scusandosene mi accompagnarono in un fondo attiguo al laboratorio dove mi mostrarono alcuni lavori che erano intimamente legati al loro mestiere quotidiano di artigiani ma che allo stesso tempo esulavano completamente dai manufatti eseguiti a regola d arte che avevo visto in precedenza si trattava infatti di realizzazioni del tutto originali frutto sì della loro perizia tecnica ma soprattutto che rappresentavano totalmente l espressione della loro vena artistica del loro ingegno e della vasta cultura accumulata in anni di studio alla facoltà di architettura roberto e alla scuola d arte di porta romana rodolfo ne fui letteralmente folgorato perché mi trovavo davanti ad opere assolutamente uniche che si rifacevano alla lezione di tanti maestri del passato remoto e recente ma che non avevano it is ten years since i first met roberto and rodolfo guarnieri in their florentine workshop or bottega on the lungarno cellini i have a clear memory of my visit to that enchanting workshop where the very air seemed to be timeless during that visit they told me the story of the family firm and the work carried out there since 1944 when i was on the point of leaving almost apologizing for doing so they showed a large ground-floor room very close to the studio and showed me some of their works which were intrinsic to their everyday craft as artisans but at the same time utterly different from the artifacts i had just seen these amazing works were completely original achievements the result not only of their technical expertise they managed to express their artistic disposition their creative flair and the extensive experience gained over many years of study at the faculty of architecture in the case of roberto and the art school of porta romana in rodolfo s case i was literally thunderstruck for i was looking at unique works which drew on lessons from many masters of the distant and recent past yet they did not pay homage to any single trend in art nor did they resort to 10[close]

nessun riferimento con correnti artistiche ben individuate né mutuavano temi o soluzioni espressive riconducibili a celebrati artisti contemporanei chiesi a chi fossero attribuibili le singole opere e sorprendentemente appresi che entrambi ne erano coautori in totale sintonia d intenti e quindi non vi erano parti realizzate specificatamente dall uno o dall altro in ognuna di esse ciascuno dei due aveva portato il proprio estro la propria fantasia il proprio bagaglio culturale maturato autonomamente in ambiti diversi ma cementato dalla frequentazione della bottega paterna e dalla comune passione per il legno in tutte le sue declinazioni non è frequente ma nemmeno rarissimo trovarsi davanti a fratelli coautori è accaduto e accade in cinema in teatro e in letteratura è molto più difficile che avvenga nel campo dell arte dove è quasi impossibile ideare e poi realizzare quadri o sculture in perfetta simbiosi creativa e compositiva la prima cosa che suggerii fu quella di mostrare i lavori ad un critico d arte che fosse in grado di analizzarli ed esprimere un giudizio con molta più competenza dopo avremmo valutato insieme l opportunità di allestire una mostra per questo stabilii un contatto col professor giampaolo trotta il quale come era successo a me rimase piacevolmente sorpreso nello scoprire la qualità e l unicità di quanto gli fu mostrato tant è che prese l impegno di presentare iguarnieri in occasione della mostra del debutto che si tenne nel dicembre del 2000 in una splendida 6 subjects or solutions traceable to any famous contemporary artists i asked which of them was responsible for each of the works and was surprised to learn that both had been co-creators in a total harmony of intent and so no individual part could to be attributed to either each of them had brought his skill and imagination to every work together with the cultural equipment individually matured in different environments but amalgamated by their having spent time in their father s workshop and their shared devotion to wood in all its various guises it is still remarkable to find brothers as artistic co-creators although we have seen it in cinema theatre and literature we are less likely to perceive it in the visual arts where it is virtually impossible to plan and execute pictures or sculptures in perfect creative and compositional symbiosis i immediately suggested that they show these works to another art critic to examine them and express an opinion after that we would examine the feasibility of holding an exhibition i contacted prof giampaolo trotta and he was impressed by quality and uniqueness of what he saw he decided to display the guarnieri at their debut exhibition in december 2000 in a splendid setting in chianti the villa la montagnola over the last ten years i have followed roberto and rodolfo s work and their many exhibitions i have witnessed the increasing number of television programmes devoted to them on location del chianti villa la montagnola nei dieci anni che ci separano da quell evento ho costantemente seguito la produzione artistica e le numerose esposizioni di roberto e rodolfo e ne ho testimoniata la inarrestabile ascesa nei servizi televisivi a loro dedicati dalla rubrica incontri con l arte di toscana tv raccogliendo giudizi espressi da illustri critici quali pierfrancesco listri maurizio vanni carlo cinelli e molti altri che unanimemente hanno tessuto gli elogi nei confronti di un arte che non ha uguali che è unica nel suo genere che riesce mirabilmente a coniugare tecniche antiche come l affresco inciso l encausto o il graffito con temi contemporanei dando vita ad un intrigante mélange di razionale e irrazionale di geometria e informale di astrazione e figurazione di classicità e pop art nelle composizioni dei guarnieri c è soprattutto firenze vi sono gli echi del periodo rinascimentale ci sono masaccio e masolino c è la cupola del brunelleschi ci sono botticelli e donatello c è michelangelo ma c è anche il divisionismo e il futurismo e come non poteva questa forma di espressione artistica così ricca di rimandi non essere apprezzata all estero dove i due artisti fiorentini sono stati più volte chiamati a rappresentare la loro arte ma anche la nostra cultura è avvenuto nel 2007 a mosca e nel 2008 a vancouver ma anche in italia non sono mancati i riconoscimenti ufficiali da parte delle istituzioni infatti il comune di barberino di mugello ha voluto impreziosire la transitatissima rota incontri con l arte di toscana tv i have been impressed by the opinions of leading critics such as pierfrancesco listri maurizio vanni carlo cinelli all unanimous in their praise of an artistic achievement that has no peers and is unique that succeeds in combining ancient techniques such as engraved fresco encaustic painting or graffito work with contemporary subject matter producing an intriguing mixture of the rational and the irrational of geometry and informality of the abstract and the figurative of classicism and pop art in the compositions of the guarnieri above all we discover florence we find echoes of the renaissance of masaccio and masolino we find brunelleschi s dome we see botticelli and donatello and michelangelo but we also find divisionism and futurism soon this art so rich in its allusions came to be appreciated abroad and these two artists were frequently invited to present their work but also to represent our culture for example in moscow in 2007 and vancouver in 2008 official recognition by institutions in italy has also been forthcoming the comune of barberino di mugello decided to enhance the busy roundabout at the town s entrance with a series of sculptures entitled le genti the peoples these are archaic statues that i luoghi e le opere de iguarnieri the places and the works of iguarnieri vasariano che collega palazzo vecchio e gli uffizi a palazzo pitti traversando l arno un ponte ideale unisce i due luoghi fiorentini de iguarnieri di là e di qua dal fiume porta san niccolò e via dei rustici lì la storica bottega il luogo del fare dove computer e strumenti tecnologici convivono con le antiche macchine e gli attrezzi per il lavoro del legno segni evidenti di un esperienza artigiana che vive da generazioni dove si avverte l odore di trucioli di colle di vernici per dipingere dove i quadri sono appoggiati alle pareti o lasciati asciugare al sole lì fuori sul parapetto dell arno dove si respira ancora l aria di una firenze orgogliosa di una sua identità senza falsi belletti in via dei rustici all ombra di palazzo della signoria ma in un luogo inusualmente fuori dalle scie distratte dei turisti che affollano le vie circostanti lo studio galleria il luogo del mostrare dove le opere esposte dialogano fra loro e con la location che le ospita un antico fondo la cui struttura trecentesca con tanto di colonne in pietra serena che affiorano dalle pareti è trasformata e arredata con il gusto raffinato e la competenza di architetti e designer contemporanei che è certo una delle frecce più significative all arco della creatività de iguarnieri due luoghi ma in realtà un unico 29 quasi a voler emulare l idea del corridoio as if in emulation of vasari s corridor which crosses the arno to connect palazzo vecchio and the uffizi to palazzo pitti there is an ideal bridge uniting the two florentine places of iguarnieri on either side of the river these are porta san niccolò and via dei rustici it is in the former that we find the historic bottega or workshop where things get done where computers and technological apparatus live cheek by jowl with traditional machines and tools for working in wood clear signs of a generations-old tradition of craftsmanship here we smell the scent of shavings of glue and of varnish here paintings are leaned up against the wall or left out to dry against the parapet of the arno it is here that we still breathe the air of a florence still proud of her identity with no artificial cosmetics in via dei rustici in the shadow of the palazzo della signoria but in a spot strangely set apart from the agitated swarms of tourists thronging the surrounding streets is the studio-gallery the place where things get shown where the works on display converse between themselves and their location an ancient fourteenth-century ground floor chamber complete with pillars jutting from the walls but transformed with the good taste and skill of contemporary architects and luogo ideale che dichiara esemplarmente una vocazione a voler attingere a una storia e una tradizione condivise a quel territorio di confine tra arte e artigianato tra invenzione tecnica e capacità del fare che da sempre ha caratterizzato l eccellenza della produzione artistica fiorentina senza rinunciare tuttavia a misurarvisi con il linguaggio e gli strumenti della contemporaneità non c è niente di nostalgico in questa idea di rilettura della tradizione niente atmosfere seppia e ammiccamenti verso territori di un passato idealizzato da resuscitare ciò che emerge dai luoghi e dalle opere de iguarnieri sono i frutti di una ricerca da tempo intrapresa volta a rileggere interpretare manipolare sulle corde della loro peculiare sensibilità contemporanea e di moderni strumenti tecnologici tecniche ed espressioni della nostra storia artistica chi come me ha avuto la fortuna di conoscere iguarnieri fin dai loro esordi rimane colpito dal loro percorso artistico che ha goduto di una straordinaria evoluzione e al tempo stesso si è caratterizzato per una coerenza di idee e di motivazioni ciò lungi dall essere una contraddizione contraddistingue viceversa l artista e il suo modus operandi e dà spessore alle espressioni della sua creatività nelle loro opere vi è il lavoro sulla grafica antica che sollecita ad accentuare l essenzialità del segno a giocare sugli effetti del monocromo a riprodurre in grandi formati e con designers qualities clearly evident among the most outstanding of the arrows in the creative quiver-full of iguarnieri two localities but in reality one single place giving exemplary proof of a vocation an intention to draw on a shared history and tradition from that frontier between art and craftsmanship between invention technique and practical expertise that has always typified the best of florentine art though in their case also connecting to the language and the tools of the contemporary world there is nothing nostalgic about this approach to re-reading tradition no sepia atmosphere or flirtation with an idealized past with a view to reviving it what emerges from the places and the works of iguarnieri is the outcome of a lengthy determination to re-read reinterpret and manipulate the techniques and modes of expression of our artistic history according to their own modern sensibility and with the tools provided by modern technology those who like me have had the good fortune to know iguarnieri from their beginnings are struck by the way their artistic career has undergone an extraordinary evolution while at the same time being remarkable for consistency of motives and ideas far from being a contradiction this is distinctive of the artist and his modus operandi and confers depth to the expressions of his creativity in their works we find their study of ancient 30[close]
