may 2012 newsletter president s message as the sun sets on summer racing we look towards winter jumps racing and especially our amateur riders series for all keen followers you will know that the series actually started at riverton last week please meet up with other flair members when you attend these race days to cheer and be part of the celebrations as our amateur riders add a special dimension to winter racing by riding purely for love not money look after yourselves over the coming winter months rug up warmly and try to keep the flu and colds away i look forward to meeting our 18 newest members and catching up with all other members too at our luncheon or at future race days regards geertje herder Ø girl power we all know that the demand for colts is always much higher than for fillies come sale time but i have had the great pleasure to witness one of our best fillies and one of our best mares in their races recently i am of course talking of silent achiever who came and conquered all the boys in some of our top three year old races the icing on the cake was being on course to see her win the nz derby what an emotional race and this little girl did give it her best the mare was shez sinsational and again she came and conquered all before her and then topping that off with a win in the auckland cup so tell me why do people want colts and geldings when a filly or mare can do equally as well on the race track and then continue to provide us with winners from the broodmare paddock stick with the girls i say contributed by geertje herder Ø matamata breeders stakes day many took advantage of yet another opportunity to share celebrate and tie a flair sash around the neck of the winning horse after each race we must count ourselves lucky with the current strict rules of racing that we are still able to go into the birdcage and even luckier still to be at the focal point tying on the winner s sash as the horse jockey strapper owners and trainers gather to celebrate their achievements we welcome and thank racing clubs for their approaches to us to be involved so actively in their race days we are always seeking new ways to share our support and resources within the racing codes Ø fiber fresh nz thoroughbred breeders stakes at te aroha members were party to a wonderfully fine autumn day of racing from our platform high in the breeders stand with a panoramic view of this picturesque racecourse with the impressive mountain in the background and the high-class race activities one just had to be impressed again we thank nz thoroughbred breeders for the opportunity to be part of their festivities and page 1 of 5

the $20 non-members lunch was superb good company great racing and an highly elevated viewing platform i hope others were more successful on the tote than i was but that s racing when choosing the smart and safe best dressed strapper prior to each race our members enjoyed the opportunity to check the fields horses strappers and riders at close quarters from the birdcage we thank all our smart and fashionably dressed flair members who attend and help with the judging so who are emerging as our best-presented strappers it has come to our president s notice that the boys are now receiving the prizes more often than the girls it could be said that it s not always easy to look your best when dealing with horses but it is great that we are able to acknowledge and reward those who add fashion and glamour while working behind the scenes girls the challenge is on on congratulating and speaking to one very well dressed and appreciative male attendant he remarked it s a group 1 day so it s important to dress for the occasion we are sure that a good attitude like that will certainly help this young man to progress further in his chosen career we would like to thank george simon for announcing our winners and promoting our organisation and contribution to this special raceday j sumunovich olive estate a pleasing number of members gathered to hear heather s knowledge and passion for the benefits of totally natural new zealand made sumunovich olive estate products the benefits of olive oil based skin care and beauty products were well explained and heather was able to answer our questions to ensure we selected the best product for our individual needs and skin type the infused oils on dipped bread were very tasty and healthy and not a crumb was left many purchases were made for family and ourselves so with regular use we expect to be looking healthier hopefully younger as time goes on we all left with a most unexpected but much appreciated gift package of skin care products and a great feeling of well being j movie nights with flair the best exotic marigold hotel movie is a must for everyone to see this provided great entertainment and a very good laugh for those who attended last month next movie night ­ tuesday may 22nd we will email details closer to that date if you would like to be included in the movie mail out please let us know email philippajensen@hotmail.com or pip s mobile 021 639007 ¬ nz thoroughbred owners federation flair member jenny cowan who is also waikato representative of nz thoroughbred owners federation organised a bus load of thoroughbred enthusiasts which included flair girls maureen davies and rosemary scott on a recent stud and stable tour in north waikato and south auckland our first stop was te akau with a hospitable welcome from david ellis and a showing of happy yearlings brought from the hurleyburley of the sales and turned out on lush pasture to enjoy being free horses for a while among those seen and patted was the top-priced red ransom/nureyev s girl colt and half brother to filly of the year kings rose a strikingly beautiful animal a great afternoon tea was enjoyed at counties raceway and was followed by a visit to the collett family stables here current racehorses were paraded and a nextstart winner tipped and it did at byerley park we saw peter and dawn williams large barn stables which had been cleverly converted from former huge market-garden sheds next we visited leo molloy s stable where successful equine therapy is achieved a horse enthusiastically splashing was used to demonstrate the swimming race and water walker flair members on an earlier trip to byerley park will remember the land to the west which was in paddocks due to be subdivided for trainers this is now completely covered with yards and large barn stables which indicate an investment of millions and faith in a positive future for the racing industry contributed by rosemary scott page 2 of 5
